"The only person you should be comparing yourself to is who you where last year..."
Amen.THIS is one of the most helpful and encouraging sencteces I've heard in my entire life because I know how much it hurts to look at other people's work and get awfully insecure because they're so much better than you and you still have such a long way to go.You just start to beat yourself up with negativity and it doesn't get you anywhere. You need to focus on YOUR improvement and on what YOU can do.
Your words and art are truly amazing Will.Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing!

I buy a lot of sketchbooks, crazy amounts of them, but I almost never draw in them. Get really inspired to put one in my bag and actually try to pic it up and draw when I'm out and get ideas. I have a bad habit of always put to much effort in trying to do perfect drawings and have a hard time letting loose and try new stuff... Thanks for the inspiration!

That moment when you're looking through old stuff in a box and you see an old sketchbook, so you pick it up, expecting to flip through and smile, knowing your progress but then you open it and you just drop it because these drwings are just terrifying and you think to yourself "I drew THAT?!"

I've never thought of comparing myself to my older self, i usually compare myself to better artists so it beats me up n gives me more motivation but gashes my self-esteem. But when i compare myself to my older self its like a pat in the back saying "your doing great, but i know you can do better"

Agreed. He's so modest for the quality of his work. But he speaks the truth. Comparing yourself to someone else's work and then getting depressed because it isn't as good or better is perhaps a good indicator of the wrong reason to be doing art. Its a battle with yourself and and the art form. But someday's it does seem hard not to take a look at other ppls work, even just to be inspired!

I get the feeling you really like your work, and I love it that your view on people and their unique personalities changes while sketching. This really makes me want to draw, and I really look forward to making cool artpieces. You're also very right about not comparing yourself to others, it can get you down. Though I can see my own improvement when I look at my previous sketchbooks. Just don't stop drawing is the message!

Of all of the great and talented visual artists I follow everyday online and in art books, magazines, and on TV with all of their helpful tips, good advice, and how to videos, your advice in this video in my opinion absolutely tops them all, it’s the kind of advice that’s like a great quote that you write down and refer back to throughout your journey of becoming the artist you desire to be, and for that Mr. Terrell, I think you.

Every time, I watch your videos, I get very inspired to draw and draw... I even bought some smaller sketch books for easy cassual and fast sketches. And also some pencils, that I perhaps will never use ( I have my thrusty Rötring 0.5 technical pencil for more than 20 years now, and still works fine). But is is fun, to make scribles, sketch and getting back to drawing each day. Thank you for that!

" this will be the best sketches I'll ever do and they will all be in this brand new sketch book!" Lol i love seeing finished books. I need to go dig mine out and get back to work. Thanks for the great video. Very helpful.

Just looking at your sketch books inspired me to want to finish one. I always have that problem where I discourage myself a few days after having a sketch book and end up not continuing for months after- and by then I already boxed up the sketchbook in my closet with the other dozen or more I own.
I really admire your art, thank you for posting it- and for putting a link for the white gelly roller pens-- I couldn't find a regular gel pen that didn't constantly clog up for my artist trading cards.

I was on deviant art looking at all of the amazing art and was thinking to myself, how on earth will I ever be able to reach those levels of artistry, so your advice about not compering my art to others but instead compering my new work with my older works to gage myself was really what I needed to hear. (P.S. sorry about typo, I meant thank you.)

Hey man, great video. I only just found your videos yesterday, and the second a saw your style I just had to sub. I also really want to say thank you. As an artist, I feel that the most intimate and sincerer thing you can show someone is your sketchbook. It's not like showing someone a crisp, photo shopped version of something you've been making for months, but rather, it's like letting people see into you. Every mistake, every development through trial and error is clearly put out there to anyone who wishes to judge. Seeing you do that and a huge format like TH-cam makes me feel much more confident in showing my sketchbook.I really cannot wait to learn more from you. So, thank you!

I love the tip about putting your first drawing in the sketch book towards the middle. I don't know what it is but that is something horribly intimidating about a new sketchbook and my first sketch always comes out horribly in it even when I'm in practice and I've been consistent with a daily sketch and drawing. I'm definitely going to do this with one of my new sketchbooks once I fill up my current one.
I've been really loving your videos lately and wanted to say thanks! You're fantastic and I super appreciate that you make them for us!

Excellent advice. I was comparing my work with other artists and once you start its difficult to stop. I also like using the brown papers, its works well when creating flesh tones especially when doing ATCs or ACEO's. It is so easy. I am considering just using that color seeing I do so many illustration in human forms. Really nice sketchbook illustrations as well.

Really nice. I have not seen a brown paper sketch book before seems like a nice idea for something a bit different. I love sketchbooks. Its a good habit to just draw in there for an hour a day. I use my sketchbook for all kind of random stuff. Study's of other artists, human body, perspective and random doodles. Really just anything that is in my head for that day.
Mine are a lot more messy then what you show here. But the fun thing about them might just be that no two sketchbooks of different people (or even the same person) are the same.

I don't know if I'm the only one .. but I feel like I'm scared to use my sketch book or even draw! I've been wanting to make a comic book since I was a kid. I have tons of ideas and stories but I've never make one!
there's always something holding me back from drawing ! every time I decides to start making my own comic ! I keep telling myself that I have to wait until I improve my skills ! tho I really improved alot during all of these years .. but I guess I'm just weird x'D

I know what you mean, just practice, practice practice. I know the feeling of wanting to hold the idea until you're really good, afraid of messing it up. xD But you gotta do dat sketchbook. ^^ I was in the same boat, I just finally said "Whatevs" and just started sketching! ^^ So go for it, and I also learned that if I say "Ahh, I'm gonna mess this up", I end up messin' in up! xD So (Sounds cheezy but) really believe that you can do it, and you'll be happy with the results!

Just remember that you don't have to show anyone and that sketchbooks are for messing around and experimenting.

will thanks for the great videos. can you do a video showing some of your work from when you were starting out and talk about any obstacles you had to overcome to refine your technique into what it is today?

    I love your laugh! haha
Also this was really inspiring for me to watch.
I'm always so critical of my sketchbook stuff, because frankly it stinks.
But this inspired me to practice a lot, and not worry about my sketches looking messy or unfinished..or strange. XD
    Awesome video. And awesome art!

thankyou so much for sharing and lovely inspirational words. My main problem is that im not drawing and painting enough! I worry so much about being rubbish I become so scared of that blank piece of paper I don't do anything with it. Its like im afraid my soul is going to get laugh at by others or even myself. its hard to explain, but anyway your words have helped me to be more confident with my art. Thank you again!
