For all the people saying that they are sad that his old "horrible" artwork is better than your best, that shouldn't make you sad! It should give you hope, because look where he is now! If you keep practicing and drawing and trying new things everyday, you will get better. I'm pretty sure if we all put our drawings from age two side by side they'd be indistinguishable. I'm very glad Will kept going even though he was admittedly not great at drawing in 1997, because he is fantastically talented now, and his artwork inspires and brings joy to thousands of people now. :)

When you show your old sketchbooks, it's really encouraging -- especially for all the hard-working young artists who are wondering if it's even worth it.

Wow:) Seeing your first sketchbook has really both comforted and inspired me to keep working at art. I am currently in my freshman year of college much like you were when you filled that first sketchbook and its amazing how similar your sketches look to some of my stuff. I get so terribly frustrated when I try to draw something (especially full body stuff) and it doesn't just turn into the amazing perfect piece of artwork when I finish especially when seeing all of the amazingly talented artists out there drawing such amazing things, some older than me, some younger. Anyway...thanks for sharing that. it may be really embarrassing to you but it was extremely encouraging to me :)

It's fun seeing illustrators and animator's old sketchbooks. It shows they weren't born with the talent and many have the same potential they do, it's just that they worked to that potential. For example, people call me a genius at drawing but they are surprised when they realize my drawings as a seven year old were just like a seven year olds!

the thing about me is that iam a decently good copying somebody's staff (comics,cartoons,etc..) but sketchin...im not that good ,also nobody told me that i suppose to draw 24- 7 even if your bad you have to do it,carrying a sketch book everywhere (i never finish school and no one teach me how to draw correctly). And then i heard you said that "you have to draw all the time and order to get better" and that motivated me,your videos in general does that, motivatetion and inspiring. thank amigo!

I am 15 years old and I am starting artist more like a beginner of a beginner . I am really inspired and I love your work, you are amazing. The way you draw is...perfect, you have such confidence in your lines, the way they just curve perfectly, and the way you have placement and everything. Anyways I love looking at your sketch books, they are very amazing I wish I could draw like that right now I am in the earliest stage of things....my main issue with my drawings is PORPOTYIONS! I can't do the placement correctly and how the way face looks, I just always mess up and jump around to different videos and look at how tos and I always geting really frusturated with mu proportions still and end up giving up. Your small advice in like the five tips to help you draw better help me more than you know. It has helped a lot and and I don't really want to straight up ask for advice because this is youtube and this is the comments and I know it would be stupid to just start asking you a bunch of questions that would take forever to answer them all. But anyways, I'm going to ask one question. Proportions , I have such an issue on getting them right, there's been very many few times that I've gotten the body kind of right but there's still a lot of wrong things. I've been trying to find a way to do different like beginning sketches that would help it but I've always had an issue with them. I've tried to do that" this many heads tall "and look at an different videos and I always mess it up. I don't know why. If you've made it this far and read all this and are still willing to comment you are amazing. I hope that you keep doing the sketch books like you are because it is amazing that you will see how such an amazing artist like you were able to start with a style that I'm starting to get close to it as the kind of sloppy / I called chicken scratch lines. Once again thank you and I really do hope you comment on this and help me with that proportions issue because it has been bothering me for over 2 years and I don't know what to do. Thank you :-)

Hi i'm an architecture and music student from Costa Rica who stumbled with your channel while looking for material to improve his drawing skills anyway, even though you have not upload any "tutorials" per se you have what to me seems to be the most important skill in an artist an teacher which is to inspire others to teach themselves how to learn, if it makes sense, anyway, amazing work and remain an artist in motion.

I love your sketchbook videos. Your other ones are great as well, but I love the diversity and energy contained in sketchbooks. I too threw away a huge amount of artwork in the 90's - in fact a 19" CRT LG Studioworks monitor box full of art.

Your early drawings remind me so much of mine around 2002 to 2003. I always liked drawing, but I just couldn't draw things consistently or on model and even shading I was terrible at, just bathing everything in core shadows, much less know a thing about blending. Here's to gradual improvement.
