There’s no regular boat but they will go if there are enough people, we do remember someone mentioned minimum 4 people but they will take 2 people for the right price. Just need to sign up the day before at the pier. We do not recommend if you are running out of time in your visa to speculate with this boat, keep yourself couple of days extras.
That long bus journey is still one of the most common routes between the two countries (if not flying). We hope this video help people find the less traveled route.

12 years ago, before smartphones, we didn’t know anything so we took the bus from Vientiane to Hanoi, took us at least 30 hours 😢
