    What I absolutely love about this match is the pure sportsmanship and camaraderie that both Tak and Stephen bring to the table - you can feel the respect each has for their opponent in every dice roll! I have huge appreciation for both Vanguard Tactics and Play On for what they do for the hobby, I got into 40k because of Play On's Intro to 9th edition video, and watching high-skill, high-sportsmanship games like this keeps me motivated and enthused even when my Death Guard are being shot to pieces by pesky space eleves...😂 Thanks both!

      Very much appreciate that you like what we are putting down. There is something special about a game that flies someone across an ocean to play across a table from you. You want to roll dice, have fun, and enjoy that time together. Stephen Box was an amazing guest and we definitely enjoyed his time in the studio.

    youtube warham games are always drawn out and boring. It's a lot of shuffling around, throwing dice, comparing results etc.
    This format is GREAT.
    It's fast, snappy, skips a lot of the "dead" time.

    Took me too long to get around to this video.
    That being said, when Steve gives tak some pointers, and jt says something about it, then says it's the best way to play, I couldn't agree more.
    There is very little better things on this earth than when you're playing a superior player, or more experienced, or whatever, and they start teaching you tips and tricks to improve.
    It's amazing.
    The other week I was playing a competitive team player. I hadn't played since 5th edition and just got back in. He played tsons vs my blood angels.
    Yea, sure he won. But once he realized how much better and more experienced he was, he started giving me tactical advice. I learned so much.
    Neither of us lost. He won the game, but I learned more. It was great.

    Amazing match, but one thing I want to point out is that at the 30:00 mark when Tak should not have been able to overwatch against Calgar and his unit. the stratagem says it can be used when an enemy unit starts or ends a charge move within 24" of a friendly unit that is eligible to shoot as if it were its shooting phase. It does not say you can use it on declaration of a charge, the enemy unit must roll to charge and succeed so that it can then start its charge move. It's a new edition stuff happens as we saw and was explained at the beginning of the batrep with Stephen scout moving his Repulsor. Not trying to be mean just wanted to point out something i saw. Love you guys and your content, keep it up.

    • @PlayOnTabletop
      @PlayOnTabletop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another person commented about "charge rolls" versus "charge move" and brought up really good points as you have here about when "Fire Overwatch" occurs. I appreciate everyone who is helping us be better at the game and understand the rules. We have a very interesting interaction here.
      In terms of sequencing, we could have declared the charge and done the charge roll first and he could have rolled his 3" (with engagement range 4") and that would have been deemed successful and thus it would be okay to do the Overwatch.
      However, then, due to hazardous I lose a model and thus the 4" is not sufficient to end the charge move. But this happens after the "charge roll" which essentially means, yes, he could have started the "charge move". But then can he still move?
      In Horus Heresy it clearly states you can move if a charge is failed. In 40k it doesn't seem to say you can, but it doesn't say you can't. How would you play this? Inquisitive minds want to know.

      Well, it seems like the Admech players cheated by misunderstanding some rules it seems, some passives and buffs should not apply to some units. Honest mistakes , but that is one of the reasons.

    • @PlayOnTabletop
      @PlayOnTabletop  ปีที่แล้ว +10

      There certainly was no intention to cheat but yes some rules were done incorrectly. The Kastellan Robots do not have faction: doctrina imperatives, and do not have a Feel No Pain 4+ though luckily for the game itself the Robots died Turn One. The Overwatch issue is something both us and Vanguard Tactics are looking to get clarified with the powers that be.

    Hmm Squad Tactic is not a core stratagem, it's from Gladius Task Force. You can only activate it if an enemy unit is ends a move within 9" of yours. And it cannot be used if you're in engagement range. So in this case it wasn't a correct move (around 22:24)

    • @PlayOnTabletop
      @PlayOnTabletop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe Stephen was playing Gladius Task Force as that is the only one available to Space Marines currently and when the Destroyers fell back out of engagement range is when he triggered Squad Tactics. The Destroyers were within 9" of the Bladeguard Veterans. Does that clarify or did we miss something else? Thanks for letting us know.

      LOL. I thought we finally got passed the distinctions between Cult Mechanicus and Skitarii but on further review I found at least two datasheets that do not have faction: doctrina imperatives. I can only assume it is on purpose but it strikes me as strange as even servitors have the faction ability. If it is not on purpose someone needs to let someone know.
      Okay so it looks like all Cult Mechanicus units EXCEPT the Kataphrons don't have the faction ability. Geebus. That changes things for future builds

    In 10th, you Overwatch not when the Charge is declared (like it was in 9th), but when a unit starts or ends a Charge move. So you first roll for Charge, see if it's successful, and if it is, then the opponent can Overwatch. And even if the Overwatch makes the distance too long for the Charging unit to end within Engagement Range, it still can make the move and then fight (covering the needed distance with pile-in).

    • @pepi560
      @pepi560 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is this really true? Can you explain which rules interaction allows you to end outside of combat range and then pile in?

    • @antongrigoryev6381
      @antongrigoryev6381 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@pepi560 It's because at that point, the Charge roll was already made and deemed successful. Overwatch specifically says it's used when a unit starts or ends Charge Move. The unit already begins to move, and *that's* when Overwatch happens - so the unit can continue to move after Overwatch was done.
      And it can fight because it has made a Charge Move - any units that made a Charge move can fight as per Fight Phase rules, even if there are no enemies in Engagement Range - and pile-in is a part of the Fight.

    • @PlayOnTabletop
      @PlayOnTabletop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The issue is with bullet 2 of the table on page 29 of the core rule book. "If the distance rolled is insufficient to move within Engagement Range ... the charge fails". Remember that pile in moves are in the "fight phase" not the charge phase so they cannot be added to the distance to determine success in the "charge phase". This is irrespective of a model that may have been there when the charge is declared because when the charging unit goes to move if that model is no longer there, so is it's engagement range. Thus, the charge is failed.

    • @antongrigoryev6381
      @antongrigoryev6381 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@PlayOnTabletop Bullet points are shortened for quick referense, but they shouldn't be used for deciding on such specific interactions like this one. From the rules proper:
      "If any of these conditions cannot be met, the charge fails and no models in the charging unit move this phase. _Otherwise,_ the
      charge is successful and the models in the charging unit _make a Charge move_ "
      It's all about the sequencing. You first check if the Charge is sucessful. You roll and see the result if it's enough - if it is, you can move. _After_ this, after the models were already allowed to move, the opponent gets to Overwatch.
      As for the move itself, the only things written about it are:
      "move each model a distance in inches up to the result of the Charge roll. When doing so, each model in the charging unit must end its Charge move closer to one of the units selected as a target of its charge."
      Nothing in the description of the move itself says that you can't do it if you can't reach Engagement Range - it's only stated in the description of the roll that allows that move, but that step has already passed.
      Again. Overwatch is done when a unit _starts a move_ . And if a unit already started the move, it can finish it, no pre-conditions matter. If Overwatch could make it so the target unit doesn't get to move, it would mean that Overwatch shouldn't have been possible as the target unit doesn't move.

    • @PlayOnTabletop
      @PlayOnTabletop  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fascinating. You are right that there is a distinction between the "Charge Roll" used to determine success and then the "Charge Move" which is the actual move. So during the Charge Roll step the condition is met. Then at the "start" of the Charge Move "Fire Overwatch" happens. But, which is the very interesting point you bring up - the "Charge Roll" has already determined success.
      In Horus Heresy there is very clear writing that you still move after a charge is failed but in 40k it doesn't state verbatim that you can move even if the condition is not met, but it doesn't say you cannot move either.
      I would be fascinated to hear what the rules writers think or intended here. I have not come across your interpretation of this before and I can now clearly see how you came to it. We have not played it as such before. Thank you for clearly noting all of this and I think we will be having an interesting conversation ahead.
