No bee's, no food.
Also no sun, no food! I think that is 'their' intention. The man made clouds are blocking the sun.
No fruit certainly.
No meat either... animals eat the veg that the bees pollinate.
I'm in America and I have been telling my husband all summer, "Where are the bugs?!"
I remember as a kid the porch light swarming with insects- now maybe 2-6 on a "good night." I feel it's all bugs - not just the bees and butterflies. 😢
I have always love bugs - it's a dramatic decline.
I'm worried about the bees as well Emma, and the butterflies. We've noticed this all over our allotment site. The May flowers came and went quickly, the rain washed them out. All of the pollinator friendly flower seedlings planted are so late to bloom, many have been taken by slugs. The best flowers so far are the ones that self seeded from last year. We need more bees, cut some of the annual flowers, it will encourage more flowers to bloom over the next couple of months. Once they go to seed they stop blooming so fill your vase and enjoy!
I've normally a garden full of bees but I've seen 4 bees 😢, some of my flowers that lasted months have seeded and gone already.
I have seen quite a few posts where people's plants have died over night and bushes and trees have died top to middle. I had one do that too. It's all very worrying if I was honest! 😢
My favourite part of summer is to watch the bees busying about doing their thing. 🐝🐝🐝
I am an avid gardener with severely limited vision, your idea with balls an canes is brilliant, managed to get a load for £2 at charity shop. My garden is colourful and safe now as I have loads of Tom's cucumbers and beans. Thanks for tip and I also haven't had bees even though I have lots of lavender which is usually covered in them ❤
Yes I have see been a lot more and I in London. this year I planted borage- and the seen to love borage and the lavender. so try borage.
I'm now growing clumps of borage.
the bees are all here in SoCal! I have a TON! plant some squash plants if u can grow them, the bees LOVE my squash, they go crazy for squash flowers!
The air is like Covid time, it's eerie. I've only seen a couple bee's.
Lots of bumble bees. And this is the first year in three that I finally have honey bees in the garden…. So thankful!❤
We've an allotment neighbour who has set up 5 hives, so our bee situation is great!
I wonder where all that cloud comes from 🤔🤫??
Spain
Suffolk, very few honey or bumble bees, just a few wasps and today my first horsefly bite!
I see plenty of bee's but that's only because there are about 20 hives in the field next to my plot! So I'm lucky!
Same here in southern Scotland Emma. Hardly any bees or butterflies. My buddleia is usually smothered and I've seen two Red Admirals and that's it. It's very worrying not having any pollinators. Very autumnal here too ! The allotment and garden just has that feel about it. Some sunshine would definitely help!
Great haircut Emma, let's hope there's an Indian Summer and we'll see more butterflies and bees in August and September. RIP Pumpkins 🎃
Here in Hinckley there are hardly any pollinators at all, very few bees, no hover flies, no ladybirds, very few birds, no butterflies, no dragonflies, no damsel flies. It is a silent garden now!
Iv seen 4 🐝 iand 2 butterflies all this so called summer loln in my back garden. I'm in Cardiff GB xx
Even no mosquitoes, cloud seeding
My garden is buzzing with bees 🐝 they are all over my lavender and the butterflies are all over my budlia in the south east 😊
Insects in general have been very sparse this year, last year I could have fed my whole village on the amount of beans and tomatoes I had, this year I have 11 tomatoes on all my vines, I've picked maybe 20 beans, all my plants are full of flowers they just aren't getting pollinated. I normally have peacock, red admiral, painted lady, comma butterflies amoung others, this year I've seen 4 cabbage whites lol. Normally I could go out and count maybe 50 bees at a time on my lavender, the Most I've seen so far this year is 4.....
You can hand pollinate!
@@TraceUK yeah I've done some of that with my pumpkins but I'm not gonna sit there doing it for hours with tomatoes and beans lol
Tomatoes are self pollinating. You can gently 'tickle' the blooms or lightly shake the stems.
I've got thousands of bees coming on my allotment to go on the comfrey I grow .I leave half my allotment as wild life garden but comfrey has taken over it but the bees love it. Here in Nottinghamshire.
We can honestly hear the bumming of the bees on my plot on the Dahlias and on the lavender
I’ve seen more bees this year in my garden, but I did make a concerted effort to plant more bee friendly/attracting flowers. 👍🏻 🐝
I planted phacelia as green manure. It was absolutely covered in bees and other pollinators. Then it got a bit cold. They're back now though. Blooming hot and sunny here in Oxfordshire. As usual for UK...humid! Pumpkins etc have been pollinated.
Grow phacelia if you want a ton of pollinators. Farmers use it to nourish the soil.
Have worked on making my whole front garden a pollinator paradise. They are all over, some take naps in the sunflowers and it’s adorable
Emma use milk cartons so then slugs cant go in there and it will help with grouth make sure there holes its like a mini green hous
You look rather lovely here Emma. You’ve a nice colour too.
We have got lavender, rosemary and chives in our garden and we’ve got quite a lot of bees. Cabbage white butterflies have definitely been fewer.
i live next to a major rail line and its covered in huge buddlia bushes... I went out and did a tally of the bees i could see around them and I counted 5 bees and two butterflies in half an hour which is extremely strange.
Moved into a bungalow with a huge south facing garden. I fenced off a large area for my daughter to develop an allotment area as she had been waiting for one for years with our local council, her flat only has a tiny front area. Anyway she has planted lots of pollinator friendly plants as have I in my part of garden. Also lots of bug hotel and habitats around garden too but compared to last year bee numbers are definitely down Emma. There must be some around as most veg has been pollinated and have grown lots of blueberries, apples, peas, spuds. Beans are starting to grow but yield is low compared to previous years. Toms have flowers on and some fruit but very tiny at moment. This years spring and summer has been awful wet and cold mostly which must of impacted Bee population.
Loads and loads of spiders.
The bees and butterflies have just started arriving. I have lots of borage, hollyhocks and nasturtiums to try to encourage them in. I have been hand pollinating my cucumbers to make sure tho.
I have lots of bees here in Oklahoma. I haven't seen as many butterflies or hummingbirds this year😮 Those pea vines are full of nitrogen. Make sure you compost those!
I do bumblebee surveys at work, same route every month. Last July we counted 82 on our walk, this year only 28. We think some may have drowned or starved in their nests because of the constant bad weather, but I am not an expert.
Wow, that's not good.
I have been inundated with bees of different kinds. Obviously not when it cold and raining. They get too cold to forage.
Today they are all over my alliums and nasturtiums. I do have butterflies but only recently. Our spring was too wet and far too cold. We can all try to provide ares and plant for them. We all have to do out but. Mass production sprays chemicals so we have to do our bit. It can be done I live near a small airport and see a lot of wildlife
Thank you !
No butterflies either!
In the spring when my ox eye daisies flowered there weren't many bees. I have seen I cabbage white butterfly today and that's it 😢
Update seeing more cabbage whites, small brown butterflies and quite a few bees 🐝
I live in Cornwall not seen any butterflies and just a few Bee’s my garden has a lot of flowers and I normally have a lot of. This was my question to my Niece today .
Here in Sweden bees have been late to come around this year, but now I see so many bumble and solitary bees around my flower beds, they seem to have bounced back after the long winter.
Vi hade en massa bin å humlor förra året. I år har vi haft väldigt lite. Glad att dina har kommit även om de var sena 😁 bättre sent än aldrig 👍
😊❤
Maybe related to the v cold wet spring: more slugs, fewer bees. Alternatively, as a friend of mine said, what part of “insecticide” do farmers not understand? Industrial arable farming uses a lot of insecticide. All the more important for people to grow their own, and if affordable, buy organic.
Based on the comments the more rural have not noticed the decline in bees. I have noticed the absolute silence in the birds for many.many years and now the silence of no bees and I have seen barely any butterflies this year. The decline is speeding up.
Still seeing the bees, hover flies and butterflies but could use some more sunshine. Lots of my wildflower seeds didn’t germinate this year 🙄
Distinct lack of insects full stop have bees but not as many as usual, planted lots of bee friendly plants,, loads of lady birds back in spring, lots of aphids and whitefly and horrible brown spot everywhere , powdery mildew argh, it's been an interesting year so far ,most plants a good 3-4 wks behind. Had some wins though so just cracking on and seeing what I get
I have seen loads of bees as my daughter told me to buy hot lips plants which the bees love.
Few white butterflies, not many bees here in north west.x
It’s the same here in Sunderland I have not seen many 🐝
GEO ENGINEERING.
Yes
I just wrote that too 😢
It certainly is , 5g and chem trails
Yes it is😢
I agree. My broad beans have no beans. Where are the pollinators? No gnats at dusk! Clouds are odd too! Lots of straight lines. Weird. I've taken photos to keep an eye on what's going on. I was thinking about the farmers too!
I’m thinking there are less bees because there are fewer flowers blooming in the garden. In the past you have had loads of corn flowers, sweet peas and borage blooming at the same time. More flowers more pollinators 🌺🐝
there are mites that get on the bees and kill them, the mits can be killed but the solution will also kill the bees.i saw a article about this and they can now treat the bees and it only kills the mites.
See you soon ❤
I planted a row of lavender in the spring and I've quite a few bees visiting that. Not many butterflies though.
North London. Very few bumble bees. I understand some of the reasons. An unusual one that I discovered recently is that they compete with honey bee, and there were seven hives in one location at the last count. I think there should be a limit because that is just an industry for profit at that location. Self-serving people who are interested in their own interests in an overcrowded area. Time to move! 🙄
Hi Emma, definitely not as many bees as last year and I’ve only seen 2 butterflies. It’s a sad time but all we can do as gardeners is keep providing a good range of flowers for them and hopefully they will come
Definitely fewer bees and butterflies here in Northants. Garden is full of flowers for pollinators and wildflowers , as well as veg flowers but hardly any pollinators😢
Emma I use straw around my pumpkins to deter the slugs and it works Input a stick in near its root so i know where to water and feed the pumpkins it always works 👍🏼
I have had loads of butterflies since last week. Almost no bees, no wasps either. Couple of hornets. PS. I was made up on Friday as I walked up the road and someone had put a lil blackcurrant bush out FOR FREE. Can you imagine how quickly I grabbed it 😂 Then when I walked up there a couple of hours later…they had a loganberry out 😮 Absolutely made up that I scored them. I’d love to see what you’ve found for free since you’ve been allotmenting!
Loaddssssss of bumble bees, mason bees, carpenter bees & honey bees here. Hundreds in my neighbour’s Lavender as I type
I spoke to a beekeepwr here in Norfolk.
They will take time to catch up. The weather.
Also, I read too that they had starvation and had to be fed. I am interested to know more.
We have a bank of lavender here, many bumbles but few honey bees.
We have all said the same...😢
Beekeeper, my fingers are missing letters!😊
Severe lack of bees. Terrifying.
Last year I hated white butterflies because of my cabbages. Today I was so pleased to see my first one. Hardly any bees or wasps or butterflies. What is going on? It’s scary. I’m in UK
I have lots of bees here in Lincolnshire buzzing around the flowers.
Same here in North Yorkshire
Hiya Emma, across the the pond southern Ontario Canada same thing very little bee, 🐝butterfly🦋🐞 sightings? Take care have a great weekend. 🇨🇦🎈
They are in my garden ! Different varieties of 🐝 and🦋 have been in good numbers although we have had a lot of rainy weather. I garden organically for wildlife and nothing is planted (apart from my veg beds) that isn’t bee or wildlife friendly. If people do this and provide food, water and homes for them they will find you. Even bird numbers and squirrels are up this year in my garden, having been displaced due to new build housing estates nearby.
Not had a decline on my plot this year. My raspberry bushes were full of bees. It’s is worrying when the government keep allowing the use of the nasty pesticides though. No bees means no food. We all need to do our bit and fight to stop the use I feel. It’s becoming urgent now I feel
Also for bees i have had lots this year on old veg gone to flower as well as sage flowers and lavender. They love it. They will soon be on all your flower bulbs. It looks very lush and green on your plot atm
I have a mass of lavender that is usually HUMMING with bees, but not this year. This year, I'm "Quick! There's a Bee!" And then it's gone. To this point, my dwarf runner bean harvest (if I can call it that) has been very poor.
California where I live very few bees this year in my garden I have more flowers this years and I keep water out for them love seeing the bees in the garden.
Loads of different bees and other pollinators in my garden in East Berkshire. We have a tree with masses of small white flowers on and they love it. Also lots pollinating the courgettes and cucumbers. I haven’t noticed that they are less than other years.
There are loads of bees in Northamptonshire.
The warm weather has woken up the bees in my garden, they had all gone to sleep thinking it was Autumn xxx
Yes I have seen bees and butterflies ….and other pollinators especially birds . I live in the countryside of the South Downs National Park (West Sussex) . I have lots of plants that attract pollinators.
Last Monday when it absolutely hammered down with rain, that really got me feeling depressed (I usually go out into my garden straight after I get home from work but I didn’t because of the heavy depressing rain I didn’t 😩) So thankful for yesterday’s and today’s gorgeous weather 🥵
God bless the sweetpea
We are in the Midlands and we had sun and blue clouds all day even now the sun is just on the way to setting also a line of dry washing 😊
Hi Emma, loved the video. Same with the bees in my garden. Where are they. P.S. keep making the great videos.
Apparently, I'm hogging all the bees. I planted a wall/fence of Red Sunflowers and Hollyhocks. One neighbor insists I kill all my plants because the honeybees only come to MY house. I didn't realize the issue stretched from NW Oregon USA to London. Apologies, but I'm not cutting my plants down. Hope you understand.
Not seen very many bees or butterfly's I saw one orange one I've not seen before a cabbage white and a red admiral crazy I have lots of flowers and expect more than that
I’m seeing bees 🐝 in my garden not as many but glad to see the odd few enjoying my garden and I’ve a wasps nest just outside my living room window I’m absolutely terrified of those things and in the last few days I’ve seen plenty of butterflies 🦋 I’m in Yorkshire I hope they return for you
I guess they're all here in Kent then cos we have as many as usual...
Thanks Emma nice crop of peas.
Our budlea is flowering and uually teaming with different butterlies and bees. Not so far 😥
I’m with you on the bee front Emma. They normally move into the home Les in the side of my house but we bicked them up before they could this year. Normally the garden is full of bees and now I know why. Since July last yr the rain has been full on. Same with the butterflies but not as many. Hope things improve. Also don’t mean to be negative Nellie but you have a lot of creeping bind weed coming on your plot again Emma. I love that you keep turning up with new plants you’ve grown this yr. odd bought ones too but that is fine. All my courgettes and pumpkins etc have been mullered. Ps How are the brassicas doing?
Yes I agree about the lavender Emma look up the plants that the bees love ,you did say you wanted extra flowers and l
Plant herbs too 😊
very hot and smoky here on the 🇨🇦 prairies. We had a lot of bees in the apple trees and roses when the were blooming, but very scarce now! we could really use cooler temps and some rain!
I've been asking where the bee's are this year😢 🐝
I’m in scotland and I have tons of bees still but have not seen a single butterfly. Last year they wreaked havoc as caterpillars on my gardens but there’s no damage except slug damage. Bees galore here but yep, strangely not a butterfly
‘Bee absolutely honest’ lol. 🐝 My garden is full of bees, I have no concern that their number has declined in my area. Is concerning you aren’t also seeing them in your allotment. The Butterflies however are entirely absent here sadly. Bear in mind 95% of pollination is done by solitary bees like mason and leaf cutter bees, not honey bees, and solitary bees are harder to spot as they are abit smaller and a bit less brightly coloured.
I've had loads of bees in my garden & i have to keep evicting them from my kitchen xx
Have you tried Chilli flakes around the seedlings to protect from snails and slugs?
I have had tons of bees in spring on the big Pieris plant flowers. Now they’re are all over the borage & thyme. I created a big patch at my allotment. Haven’t seen many butterflies just odd one. I leave plenty nasturtiums for them but really very few about
Loads of bees here in the Northwest, especially bumblebees. I've seen quite a few moths but very few butterflies though. Our council stopped mowing in 2020 until later in the season so loads of wildflowers about through the summer and people have been seedbombing wildflowers on the grass verges, which I think helps.
I have a quite a few bees luckily in Lancashire. But my allotment is full of pollinators, nepeta is a real attraction for them. My best tip has been to plant lettuce and sent it to seed. The flowers on these seem to really attract bees and many other smaller flying insects. Plus they look really beautiful. Each lettuce produces different flowers too. Rocket is a personal favourite of mine, plus grows really quickly. Next year I aim to grow lettuce indoors in January so it will hopefully go to seed early spring for early flowers for the pollinators. Fingers crossed. Have had hardly any butterflies at all. A couple of cabbage whites in the last few days and that’s it. X
I've honestly seen one red butterfly this year, I've seen around a dozen cabbage whites, quite a few honey bees around the borage, and a few bumbles, no great problems with bugs this year. I've a pollinator garden made this year, but still squash plants putting out females and no males.
I'm in the US and where I live I thankfully have lots of bees and butterflies.
On my allotment in Sweden I have ALOT of bees and butterfly! ❤
All the bees came out way too early and many would have died in April. There were virtually non over the last month but just over the last 4-5 days there are a few more bees and also butterflies. I tried to contact bee societies and never got anywhere.
Very few butterflies. Have lots of bumblebees because I have places for them to overwinter. Have you got a bughotel?
I have a garden full of pots and a garden with borders and l have seen the bees and butterfly's but l live with lots of gardens and a wood close by we have allotments and on the allotment we have a bee keeper too so lm very lucky 😊
Very few bees and even less butterflies in my garden this year. Very worrying :( x
Yep, very few bees and I've only seen 1 butterfly. I've also found that many of the things I usually grow and grow well are very slow this year! Xxx
I’ve had quite a few bees 🐝 this week in the garden phew !! We did have some in April I think before all the rain
