    Thing is, they made all these changes, without taking the consequences of these changes into account.
    For example, in the original, Jet was a guy whose old life fell apart, and is now searching the stars for a sense of purpose. In the live-action, they gave him purpose, as now he has a daughter. The benefit they saw was making Jet more vulnerable, and relatable as a character. The problem however, is that they didn’t change Jet’s aspirations, so now he’s basically a shitty father who abandoned his family.

    • @pc-98k83
      @pc-98k83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I feel like they did it because, with Spike appearing so much older, it was hard to get that “team dad” aspect of his personality out there. So they made him a real dad. But that plus the shit with his ex makes it so he can’t be “a man for whom time stands still” anymore. Just destroys his backstory.
      Shakir is just a 10/10 Jet though so this ends up feeling less severe than some other changes, notably the clusterfuck that is Vicious and Julia. That scene with the council is frankly garbage.

    • @Sela1
      @Sela1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      And by being in contact with his ex wife totally butchered the reveal of how his relationship broke apart in the anime when he meets his ex.

    • @loregoblin3854
      @loregoblin3854 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I noticed this in Ed too. I know they only appeared for a brief moment, but the wrongness of the way the character is presented isn't even the fact that animated Ed's behavior inherently appears cringe in live action... I still think a live action version of this role could've been done well if it was handled carefully, with a better script and better directing. no, the problem is that animated Ed's behavior is charming, but live action Ed seems like they're fundamentally trying to be irritating on purpose.
      in the scene, Spike is lying on the ground in an alleyway, clearly not doing very well. and Ed is sitting there next to him, yelling in his face. first of all, animated Ed didn't generally yell... they often had a very soft, sing-songy vocal quality that emphasized that they were kind of spacey and floaty. but in the live action scene, there was even a shot that seemed to be from Spike's perspective with this like, fisheye lens distortion, so it really feels like Ed is all up in his personal space. they're too close, and too loud, yelling with this weird throaty guttural quality that doesn't match the character at all. Spike doesn't like it for obvious reasons... who would??
      animated Ed is strange, sure... they have odd body language, they speak in strange phrases, and they do random things based on their own internal criteria that many people can't predict and aren't privy to. but Ed is rarely even all that high energy. instead they're more whimsical, meandering through life at their own pace, and they're often content to remain in the backgrounds of serious conversations, only popping in occasionally, or only when addressed. when they move weirdly, to me it reads as a form of stimming... moving their body in interesting ways because they're childlike, and they're bored, and this is how they entertain themselves. it feels cute and genuine... it only has to be interesting or satisfying to them, because it's not disruptive to anyone else.
      and Ed is never mean. they're committing to doing what they want to do, but they're also not hypocritical. it's a give and take, and they wouldn't impose themselves on another person either. Ed has real weird little kid energy. and while Ed might've somewhat aged out of the "little kid" category, that only adds to the notion that Ed's main priority is authenticity to themselves. they aren't self conscious about how they come across, and that lack of self consciousness is what they lend to the other characters whenever they're going through a bunch of adult bullshit. Ed is non judgemental, and simple, and that perspective can come off as very kind.
      so like... I don't think animated Cowboy Bebop's Ed would get down next to Spike's face and yell at him if he was passed out in an alley. I don't think the live action Ed is in character... I don't think they're being characterized as a kind enough person. and that is what I think begets the sense of cringe that live action Ed gives off.

    God, the writing in this show is embarrassing.
    Cowboy Bebop was Sci-fi Noir. It would have silly moments like the second episode where Spike would chase down a bounty only to get involved with the hunt for a dog, but for the most part, the series was very grounded and took itself seriously.
    It didn't have characters make jokes 24hrs a second because they would become real obnoxious quick.

But Ed basically ruined all interested I had invested in it. They should have just not had Ed at all. I basically forgot Ed existed by episode 5 and didn't really care. You can't really take that anime character and make it real. Ed should have just been a background character, occasionally mentioned, like in the one episode where Ed gives them a tip.

      its certainly easier when I dont have such a strong reference to judge it by, its an original piece doing its own thing, but I will say I have a few gripes where I couldn't understand some of the characters motivations as they almost seem contrived, Mel's interests in Jayce from day 1 seemed sus, or how Silco was so set on protecting Jinx when he had clearly no control over her but wasn't able to do anything helpful about her craziness, maybe lastly why is Caitlyn so abusive to Jayce, its like she will use him when he's convenient to her but dismissive or quick to accuse him of being patronizing when he's trying to look out for her but I guess this kind of relationship is more commonly seen in todays world.

    This is why the Hollywood push towards adapting live action versions of popular anime, manga & even light/visual novels is never, ever going to work. Both on a cultural standpoint and a logistics standpoint, these live action adaptations CONSISTENTLY miss the entire point of what made the original adaptations so goddamned special!
    What Hollywood fails to understand is that you cannot take media that's made in a completely different hemisphere, and try to impose your own cultural values onto it and expect it to translate it well to your foreign lens. Not only that, but I'm getting really sad on how most American media in the past 15 to 20 years has essentially devolved into basic, simplistic and inoffensive writing, that would only make a simple-minded philistine be slightly interested. Having seen Netflix's version of Cowboy Bebop, I can say that they were definitely trying to make it into a Marvel movie, instead of being faithful to the original series. With constant swearing, dollar store one-liner quips and terrible action scenes that are masked with CGI, was anyone even remotely surprised that this turned out to be a disaster?
    Not to mention, that Spike himself barely did any martial arts at all! Which is actually integral to the character's development and state of mind. Spike practices "Jeet Kune Do", which is a martial art made by Bruce Lee himself. It translates PERFECTLY with the character, because Bruce Lee was all about "Using no way as way; having no limitation as limitation". Spike was a laid back character, that was without limitations, or restrictions. The man had no mental barriers. He was deeply philosophical & always left things to chance. Everything he did, caused him to wonder if that day, was going to be his last day. His famous line "whatever happens, happens", is the perfect embodiment of his martial art style and his personality. That's why you barely saw Spike being stressed out in the original show! I can go on about the inconsistencies of the other characters, but it just showcases why Hollywood cannot do complex films, or shows anymore. They will only take the surface level elements of a property and try their damndest to make a quick buck.

      The cultral perspective's a big one here. The original was so rich in its meditation on existence it's almost pitiful that Netflix couldn't live up to it. The fact they've turned such a special into a poor man's Gaurdian of the galaxy, which is already mediocre, shows they don't know a damn thing of what makes the original so powerful. Also, the fact that it even exists is an embarrassment for western civilization as a whole. lol

      Preach, my dude. You're right on the money with every point, particularly your second with the bit about how the culture translates. Culture has been held hostage at least for the last 20 years, thanks to the suits taking over all control from the creatives. These joyless projects, like the live action Bebop, are the products of people who don't even like what they're messing up. Every "creative team" in the west is handed a property they have to mangle before the can put their stamp on it, that stamp usually being some derivative crap inspired by comic book movies.

I know that the actor did a comparatively good job to 99% of the cast, but that "Blackmail" scene felt really fucking gross. It's one thing to change an established character's race, but doing that, AND highlighting their new race as if they were like this in the original feels insulting. This might be kinda off topic but I rather have a show create diverse characters and adapt underrated diverse characters than change the race of other preexisting characters, they bear MUCH more fruit than the latter.

      I think it's just that the actor wasn't great. He didn't project any sense of authority or hard boiled vibes. Tbf though, the writing for Jet was shit. Compared to the original, this Jet was a loser. The daughter angle could've been promising but it got old real fast.

    In my country, Netflix added the original Cowboy Bebop to coincide with the release of the live-action. There are two equally possible reasons for this.
    1) They were deluded into thinking that after everyone loved the live-action, it would drive more people to watch the original so they could make a lot of money off of the viewership numbers.
    Or, Option 2, the more likely one) They knew the live-action was going to fail so they added the original as a counterweight so that everyone angry at the new one would flock to the old one and they'd still make it out of the scenario financially unscathed.
    The reason I think the second one is the most probable is because the original anime for Cowboy Bebop has been the most popular show on Netflix for the past couple weeks, while everyone has dropped the new version.

    I'm glad that I didn't watch Netflix's Cowboy Bebop live action. *I'd Just Rewatch Cannon Busters instead.* Cannon Busters is Better than Live action Cowboy Bebop. I'm not saying that as an opinion, saying it as fact. And It is sad that Netflix waste so much money on Live action anime adaptations that no one wants rather than give support to an anime that was created by a black man. I thought Netflix cares about diversity. That's of one my fears about the more anime becomes mainstream the more greedy Corporations makes live action that no one ask for but only for cash grabs. And Corporate Journalists websites like Polygon, CBR and infamously Vice will defend these soulless live action adaptations.

      The two things that had me genuinely shocked was episode 10 and the changes they decided to make to the church scene and when they introduced gren, I’m hoping they do gren more justice in season 2 because they made a bad first impression

      Mason Studios did Bebop justice. The problem isn't adapting anime into live action, it's doing it poorly and using creative staff who dislike what they're adapting. That's why all these old IP have to get "updated" before they're released- the writers want to leave their mark on something they don't even like. Usually they kill beloved characters just to rub it in to the old fans.

    I think they made a huge mistake casting with Faye. And didn't have the balls to fire her when she started distorting the character.
    I think that's the limit behind the Director's mistakes with her, the rest really falls onto the "I'm doing this because it's my job, not because I like it" attitude the actress had.
    She blatantly didn't care about the show at all, so she distorted her character into whatever the fuck this is.
