This was an incredible World Cup for Japan. They lost to England in Group stages. Beat hosts Germany in the Quarter Finals who were tournament favourites and had topped their group. Came from a goal down against Sweden to win 3-1 in the semis. In the final they were down 2 times, in normal time and extra time only to equalise minutes before full time and extra time expired respectively. Overlaying this, the 2011 tsunami in Japan which devastated and killed many only happened a few months beforehand.

Japanese male squad played impressive game in this world cup, they played like Ninja, like the way the shot the ball it was really impressive . I was routing for them. But they disappointed me with the penalty,I learned messi and ronaldo make penalty kicks look easy, I also learned how they did it. Kicking a penalty you always want to avoid eye contact with the goalkeeper, also don't stand in predictable way unless you are Ronaldo. 3dly, shoot the ball with power.. there something I find intriguing with messi's penalty. They make a move that simulates the shooting of a ball before the actual shot out and that move will psychology confuse the goal keeper. That's why you often times see the goalkeeper in a completely different direction. penalty is an art. You can't just go out and be a professional artist overnight. The key to a successful penalty is psychologically confusing the goalkeeper. You don't even need to shot the ball harder if you can accomplish that.

It’s more about where you place the ball. Messi and Ronaldo are not the best penalty takers. The key is actually not to deceive the keeper but put in the location where goalkeeper can’t reach it. Upper half of the goal, goalkeeper unlikely to save it.

Crazy fact is that each Japanese player only earn like $700 a month playing soccer (except the captain Homare Sawa who is the queen of JPN women soccer league) - no sponsorship fee from company like Nike or anything - literally nothing - they live in a dormitory and just practice - as nobody cares about women's soccer in Japan. They just play to win, nothing else. Then this happens. Amazing.

Out of all the times to have an absolute stinker of a penalty shootout, the US couldn't have picked a worse time. Boxx's penalty was poor, Lloyd's was absolutely dreadful and Heath didn't look like she wanted to be there. Her penalty was so tame. And that's not getting onto Solo. She was going stupidly early. Even then how did she not save Sakaguchi's penalty? Miyama made her look silly too. That penalty from Kumagai was incredible though. 20 years old, a defender, who's just played 120 minutes against Abby Wambach, and never scored for her country before, against probably the best keeper in the world at the time to win the world cup for her country the first time? To stick your penalty in the top corner in that situation is unbelievable

I think Women's football deserves some more respect. Just look at the way these Japanese players hit the ball, with perfect technique. As for the Americans...😅

The level in Women’s Football definitely has improved rapidly in the past few years. It’s still slow paced compared to Men’s Football but definitely the play, tactical implementation and techniques execution has been developing significantly as well. It’s all start at the grassroots and leagues at the end of the day.
