I am a single father planning on perusing my Masters in Social Work. I am having difficulties with finding a program that will allow me flexibility with field practicum. Working full time and being a single father it seems almost impossible to complete my Masters. Wish me luck everyone!
I'm from Dallas, just moved to Austin and I'm looking into UT's MSW program! This video was beyond helpful. Also, I laughed out loud when you said "depending on how fast you drive" haha can relate!
You make a really great point, Lauren, about choosing your MSW program based on where you plan to do your job search. I'm originally from Atlanta and had planned to return home after my program but decided to stay in the city where I got my MSW. It took me about 3 months to land a job. I applied to a few programs, and while I don't remember all programs I applied to, I chose to attend Columbia (I did a mix of MSW and MPH programs). I also got into UofM (my mentor also went to UofM, starting in a dual degree MPH/MSW program but deciding to get her PhD in public health) but chose Columbia due to me having a large group of friends and connections in NYC. As far as prestige goes, I do agree that your experience matters more than the reputation of the school, although I will say that a lot of people were impressed by my Columbia connection.
How did you like Columbia’s School of Social Work? How was the workload and your field placement? I want to go there for my MSW, but being in NYC is kinda intimidating for me.
Thank you for sharing I've been thinking about MSW programs and LCSW. I'm currently in the Social work program coming up on my senior year. I know this year will be hectic but worth it.
i feel yah Alleigha.. im almost done with my LSW Diploma program and im planning to take the alternate route which is MSW for non-BSW students. by the way, im from Canada. lol take care
Great video! I just applied to 3 online MSW programs (Boston, Denver, USC) because I recently moved across country and there are no good local MSW programs. Luckily the schools I applied for have great local internship placement programs. Fingers crossed!!
Omg so did I lol. I moved to WA state and I'm not impressed with my school choices at all. I have to do online bc I'm in the military. I am looking into some of the same programs as you. Did you choose one?
Hello! I just graduated with a bachelor degree in sociology. I'm planning on taking one gap year and then applying for a double master's program in social work and public health. Any advice in what types of jobs or experience I should gather during my gap year to be more appealing to master programs?
Hi Maria! If you can get into a hospital or clinic -- I believe that would set you up with a great insight into the field work that is done there. I picture you as a macro social worker soon, one of the downside to macro work is the lack of individual contact hours with clients. This will make you well rounded! Keep in touch Maria..I'm excited for you!
I do not want to nor can I really move onto a college campus and I prefer online anyways so I plan on getting my Bachelor's of Science in clinical psychology online and then my MSW online from the same college (brick and mortar, not an online only college). My end goal is to be a counselor/therapist. I feel naturally drawn to this career. Do you think an MSW program is the correct path/training? I don't want to become an LPC because the LCSW license opens more doors rather than being restricted to just counseling (just in the case of burn out and I like that LCSW has more career options). I looked it up and my program for MSW that I am looking to do after my BS degree says it is focused on clinical work so I'm thinking it should give me the proper education for being a counselor!
An hour and a half? You must drive pretty fast :] But in all seriousness, I live in San Marcos and want to apply to both UT Austin and UT Arlington for my MSW. Now I am having second thoughts about Arlington since my husband and I don't have plans to move that far north and I wouldn't want to network and create working relationships with people who are so far away. Another good point to consider. Thank you for making this video! :]
I do have a BSW video up now...you can check it out here || th-cam.com/video/SV0TUugX8QI/w-d-xo.html I will work on one for field instruction, great request!
Comment #2 I was looking at programs within my state but the two programs require courses that do not excite me. As of right now, I have found that Fordham does, unfortunately it costs $60k for the MSW.

Hi Lauren! I have been watching your videos for a while now and they are so helpful even as a school Social Work intern. I just finished my first year of my MSW, a great program, but it is a generalist program. I was accepted to more clinical programs online and was thinking of transferring. The school I’m currently has great connections to the community, but the curriculum is very general. Also, I do not plan to stay in the area after finishing, so the connections here are not super helpful, but still great to have. I would love any feedback you could give, if any. Great advice in this video though!
What a wonderful question-- I may share it in my FB group as well...please join if you can. Search Social Work Scrapbook Community on FB. Please be aware that many MSW programs begin with a general first year and then the clinical material hits during the second year if you chose a clinical concentration! That being said, if you feel the online program has more knowledge to offer then by all means-- go for it..as long as its accredited!
I just obtained my MSW last month and now I am looking for jobs but it has been a process. I am looking into getting licensed because I do see that it is worth it after all to obtain it. Good luck MSW's in your search.
Hi I'm a psych major thinking about going into social work. What made you decide to switch from psych into social work? How much social services experience do you need to get into a MSW program?
akyled7 I made the switch bc social workers appeared to be more hands on in the field. I never wanted to prescribe meds - which I felt was one of the main reasons for staying in psych. You don’t need too much experience- all I had was basic mentoring / occasional volunteer work...😊
Thanks for your support and question--My bachelors was in psychology so the perquisites were accounted for. Be sure you let your college advisor know what grad school you are applying for and they will help set you up with psychology, sociology and or statistics to get you ready for graduate school.
Great video! I just had a question! I am planning to get my MSW in Michigan but I want to eventually move to the west coast. I was wondering if it would be very difficult to get a job there? Or if you know of people who have been able to get a job in a different area than where they got their MSW. Also, I wanted to ask if you could make a video about becoming a licensed social worker and how to stay licensed if you plan to move to a different state? Thank you!
Hey Fatima! Job searching in CA should not be too hard. It will be possible to get a job anywhere you practice! It just takes fewer steps if you apply in the place where you were educated. Gather references while at your MSW program and you should have no problems! I will be making a licensing video soon-- there are so many requests for it!
Hello dear, I'm Cynthia offor. I'm currently studying sociology(M.sc) and it's what i studied for my B.sc and I have always wanted to be a counsellor. What should I do next because I'm a little confused if I should to p.hd in sociology or I should go for social work. I'm passionate about teenagers and their parents(family) and also juvenile delinquency.
That's a bit disappointing that wherever I choose my MSW school, that could very well be the place I end up. I'm currently living in Iowa and am in a long-distance relationship with a guy from my hometown (Chicago). I'd like to go back to school ASAP and was thinking about moving back there to go to school and be with him, but I don't want to end up there long-term. Is it really best to go to school somewhere you want to end up at?
I would definitely consider it... I didn’t go to graduate school where I currently work...and I didn’t have any difficulty getting a job. It’s all up to you, it would just be easier 😉
I enjoy watching your videos ! To become a school social worker, do I need to follow the clinical path ? I am in my second year of the SW bachelors program.

Hi, I really need your advice. I've been rejected by two universities. I have been employed as The Director of Social Services for 7years. My Bachelor degree is in management of Human Resources.. I desperately want my MSW. I am getting discouraged.
I am sorry to hear this, how is the application process going? You appear to have the right experiences maybe you are needing assistance with your narrative or references.

Yes and No! Getting jobs is going to depend a lot on your resume and experience rather than your program choice. As long as the program is accredited you should be fine! That does not mean that employers do not factor in the prestige of a school-- its only human!
I'm born and raised in Ann Arbor. Maybe it's just because I'm used to it, but UofM isn't that special. Yeah it's a good school, but it's not that pretty really. I don't really like the vibe around the campus, but that's just my opinion.

I have taken the MSW and LCSW exams but not the BSW. I would study off of any texts you still have from school.

Did you need to take statistics for your MSW?
There is one research/statistics course... but it isn't too bad. I found it quite interesting!

You will have to research the school and look up the pricing - maybe I can make a video on this 🧐
