John Mayer is living the golden life on the golden road. Let's be honest, he's doing what we all dreamed of doing, taking over and playing Jerry's solos on stage with the boys.

Perfectly said Mutualist! He has mastered Jerry's tone and doing what all of us guitarists dream of. Plus he introducing the next generation onto the Dead ensuring The Music Never Stops!

Man, it's awesome to finally see a member of the TH-cam guitar community digging into the treasure trove that is The Grateful Dead/Dead and Company. Masterful tones, musicianship and improvisation that for some reason seem to sneak right past most of the guitar folks out there. As a player, the Dead catalog changed everything for me. I hope it can do the same for other musicians looking for deeper inspiration. Thanks!

You obviously haven't heard Jerry Garcia's other projects... The acoustic band is EXTREMELY tight, also old and in the way. And Jerry and merl saunders if you like jazz. If Jerry wasn't tight he wouldn't have Tony rice, one of the best players EVER playing with him often.

Two things: One of the things I love most about this song are the fills/riffs Jerry does in the verse after he sings... they are weird and and somewhat disjointed and I LOVE THEM... would love to hear you break them down. Mayer doesn't do it like Jerry... Which is fine! #2, You mentioned in your Morning Dew vid that you loved the footage... Dude, watch the Grateful Dead movie... You. Must. Watch. It. In general I absolutely love your unfettered enthusiasm for this music and the player's work on these tunes. This music is the music of my life... (“Really really” is your signature phrase when you really really inspired about something). And now I just came across this video and I can’t even tell you how much I enjoyed it, because going to see Dead and Co shows with John Mayer over the last few years has been like going to the mountain to pray in a group trance with a whole bunch of beautiful souls. Since this song is in G Mixolydian and you mentioned at about 3:00 that it's in the "key of C, everything's off your V chord", the V chord in that statement is the G then, right? But then at about 5:35 you say "they went to the IV chord, they went to the C". So I just want to be clear, even though we're in C Major in terms of a key signature, we're "really" in G Mixo, and thus G is the I chord right? So the IV is C and the V is D for this song? F would be the bVII likewise?

Great song to pick up on although im a bit surprised at you coming lately to John's utter brilliance, ie he definitely sold soul for blues skill at some point whether at some crossroads or perhaps (in return for favors from opposite sex) where you bought that shirt from. Yeah at 65 i got me some good memorys but now couldnt hope to wear it as WELL...Back to the guitar: Mayer has stated before that it was this very song along with Althea that drew him into Jerry's melodic orbit...and now you into his perhaps? I just spent a few hours last night running (skipping deleriously thru?) licks in A myxolodian over Franklins Tower backing track just to clear head from all the Jimmy Page carbon buildup...all this shit is a delightul rabbithole no?...appreciate your insight...curiosity.....keep on keepin on....ok i am of the 60's generation so shoot me ha

Good basic stuff to learn musically on how to approach playing in a band. Well I wrote basic but I mean not necessarily easy to wrap your head around when composing own stuff or just improvising with similar taste

As you may know, John Mayer didn't get into the Dead until several years ago. I read that he started listening to the GD channel on Sirius and Althea was one of the first songs that caught his ear.

As a born lead vocalists who can strum a dozen cords and just about keep a decent beat on the drums, I find this technical stuff fascinating but as far over my head, and out of my pay grade, as I did when I was in a band. All sounds like hocus pocus to me. I never learned even the names of the guitar chords I sometimes used to play, never mind how to sing or what chord I was supposed to be singing in. I used to find singing so intuitive that I found it hard to understand why everyone could not do it.
Indeed over time I found that very few actually can with any degree of outstanding quality, or with that certain something. To me competent guitarists were ten a penny, but a VOICE, I mean a real VOICE especially if it could be backed up by enough showmanship, was actually as rare as rocking horse shit.
To me if the band had a voice, or better still a frontman as well, it could get away with being fairly mediocre musically, either on stage or anywhere else.
For example Pink Floyd could replace Gilmour's guitar playing but they will never be able to replace his voice. You can imagine The Who, without all of the other players but Roger Daltrey. Would Rory Gallagher be even known as such if he was only a brilliant player? As for Steve Marriott, same thing, but even more so X 10?
Was Queen ever really Queen without their queen?
Don't get me wrong I like music as much as anyone, indeed I am just as happy listening to an instrumental, however I hope I have make some kind of point worth making.
Perhaps I am trying to say is that you may be able to replicate or adequately replace a particular player, but you can hardly ever replicate a human voice, and that especially in the realms of guitar hero progressive and otherwise rock music, vocalists are rarely given the attention that they require. The best bands always put the vocals first and everything else secondary to it, even if the vocal parts take up a fraction of the track.
For example this band you are playing here, I mean what a vocalist, these guys don't grow on trees, but very good guitarists seem to?
