    Dude, i have almost the same truck!!! Mine is white also. I went to NC to buy mine a few years ago and tried driving it home with my car on the back. Aftet a few days of fixing it on the side of the road, I had made it to St. Augustine. At that point, I called a tow truck. Mine had sat for years also.
    After a few years and a lot of work, mine is in really good shape now! I love that truck. Mine is also a 3+3, 454, 4 speed (w/granny), and has a hodges bed. And like you, I was searching for a 4 door, square body, big block truck for a few years. Anyway, thanks for the video! I was reliving my trip back while watching your adventure.

    That deserves a full restoration. Leaving it patina is just a lazy way to call something finished. Custom build that motor and throw the blower on it and change the belt driven AC over to an electric driven AC or change it over to an LS/LT or a diesel. Those things even look awesome and a bit more comfortable with a modern interior swap.

    • @turbocateyeS475
      @turbocateyeS475 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Right because money grows on trees. Patina isnt lazy, even if you don't understand the style. Does the truck need some updating? Sure. But the point in having a ramp truck is to use it as a ramp truck. The bed needs to be powdercoated, polish up or respray the cab but besides that and mechanical stuff I'd leave it alone. A LS would be a waste. Plus watching this is completely free. Just enjoy the ride

    • @P-J-W-777
      @P-J-W-777 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ Grows on trees well enough to buy it. Besides I didn’t say anything about paying someone to do it. Sometimes restoring a vehicle can take a year or more to make right as well as spreading the cost out over an extended period. The bed doesn’t necessarily need to be powder coated . The surface of the bed should be sprayed with bed liner for durability and added grip. You could paint it and use grip tape but it doesn’t last and starts looking bad rather quickly. I also didn’t say the truck needed a 10k plus custom paint job. I do believe my first option was to rebuild the engine in the truck adding the blower that he mentioned and replacing the mechanical compressor with an electric compressor so he can keep his AC. The LS/LT were just an option if the motor wasn’t good enough for a rebuild. What part of spending money on a vehicle and then leaving the weathered rust colored damaged paint job alone not lazy?

    I dont even ask questions like "does it run well?" Or "will it get me home?" When buying stuff used. Most people don't know their vehicles. Those that do, often tell you lies because nobody gaf.
    A nice couple like this might tell you everything is fine because theyre unaware of hidden problems. Other people lie about everything just to get your money.
    Most people either don't know or won't tell you the truth, so I just base my decisions off what I can see. Play it safe & assume the worst, while paying accordingly.

      Exactly, they've driven it like two times in the past year. Who knows what went bad since the last time they took it out. Might be a really nice, honest couple, but if they aren't driving that rig regularly they are ignorant as to what's wrong with it. Or what will shortly break when you drive it or lean on it a bit.

    Tips on fixing AC. When they are not cooling well and the compressor never shuts off, don’t add Freon. Only add Freon when the compressor is short cycling or the evaporator is frosting. Most likely a plugged condenser or issue with orifice/modulation valve. Run the truck with the hood open, but latched. If that helps, replace condenser. Last tip, if you need to replace the compressor, check the orifice/modulation valve. If plugged, replace entire system. It took me two old trucks and about 100 cans of Freon to figure that out.

    Those 454s are notorious for the starter overheating because they are tucked right up under the exhaust manifold. I bought a lifetime starter for our 92 silverado 2500 because it was constantly burning out starters during coffee season. You can add heat block to the shield, but there is not a lot of room up there.

  • @jberry1982

      I've also replaced like 10 of those tilt column ignition switch "combs"
      That pot metal piece is a pretty consistent breakage, it's not that easy, but better than working on a 14 Chevy Sonic.

      That was the issue with the ramp truck wasn't it idk why GM made those column wires so tight in a tilt column just like the tow haul button wire on the late models in the early 2000's was

    • @ryurc3033
      @ryurc3033 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @jberry1982 the issue is people climbing in and out of the truck using the steering wheel as a handle. Pulling on the column.
      The bolts that hold the top half to the bottom half always work loose because they are threaded into cast aluminum. That causes the typical gm steering wheel wiggle action(more common on lifted 4x4 and 1 ton than 1/2 ton 2wd)
      The steering wheel wiggling around chafes the wires....OR causes misaligned ignition switch rod, sometimes breaking the pot metal "comb" on the end of the key and tumbler. I bet 50$ I could start that truck every time just by pushing on the top of the steering wheel to align that ignition switch rod.
      I still have my tilt column pin remover, and a special swivel e socket (inverted torx...kinda) for repairing these gm columns. Not many people left that will do anything but change them out, when they can be repaired in about an hour and a half.

    • @jberry1982
      @jberry1982 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @ryurc3033 yep and those only had two bolts some was even slotted if you remember and remember the hoods on the 73-79 round headlight models would fold up just past the springs that was a major weak spot on those they was way better on the 1980-87 and the 4X4 had a weak spot at the steering box mount on the frame it would break around the bolt holes which most of that was the push pull style steering they had I changed mine over to the 2 wheel drive box and center link which would bolt right up no mods needed and it made it a pull more than a push steering my steering stabilizer would still bolt on and everything but I loved those trucks I got a lot of the body roll out of mine with the energy suspension body mounts and bushings kit and I went with a dual shock setup with my suspension kits plus a added leaf on the front spring packs I loved the Warn stainless steel tubing brushguard bumper combo I had with the Warn high speed 9500 series winch it was fast and strong I ran super winch hubs and the premium warn on some of them I never broke any of those two types the automatic hubs worked great long as you backed up 10ft after going back to 2wheel drive the 87 year was the best to me because they was TBI injection but later on with my 1985 truck I swapped in a ZZ4 crate engine with the Holley projection efi kit pricey but totally worth it

    unless the ac system was converted, factory was probably r12, your using 134a. a pound of 134a compared to a pound of r12 takes up more volume of space, so you will lose a little cooling capacity unless its all upgraded to 134a rated and sized parts.

    Good morning from Cape Cod ⛵ Looks like you have a great truck 👍 of course don't trust the gas gauge and it's typical for the starter to be heat soaked with a big block. You just need a heat shield. I think you can give Cleetus and Squirrel a run for their money in the towing business 😂 you need to go repo something off their property real soon 😂 anyway I only recently subscribed and think you got a great channel, keep up the awesome work and the cool videos ✌️🇺🇲

    Might be the neutral start switch. Just hold the starter on, run the gear shifter up and down the gears.
    You can put your foot on the brake first, if you don't want things to get interesting. Lol.

    You dont want liquid going directly in the A/C you can damage the compressor. You should shake the can while the bottom of the can is mostly down to encourage the gas, coming from the liquid, to get sucked in the compressor. Once youre getting the can to empty you can start going 90 degrees with the can and back down, again 90 degrees then bottom of the can down rapidly(more agressive shaking essentially). This encorages any remaining amount to go in small amounts and reduce chance of liquid while stimulating gas production.

    I remember those years back that the starter is in close proximity to the exhaust manifold and would overheat. Knew a guy who would pour his water cooler on it after it was hot and did the same thing - it would start! A fix is a sheet metal heat shield for the starter
