The strings on a Cello (I have one too but it's a 5 String Cello with a High E String) are actually Flatwound and the Flat surface makes bowing on the strings easier. They were originally designed to replace the Gut strings and were invented by Hamilton as early as 1874 cause they last many times as long and the flat surface helps improve the playability.

7:35 I actually love the texture that produces, where it "softens" the sound. So dynamic.

amazing video! Wish I had seen this 15 years ago when I was still playing regularly. Back at cello again and this is exactly what I've been focusing on (self-directed). I've had a lot of good luck using a webcam attached to my computer. I set it up so from various angles and am able to monitoring real time how I'm doing (much better than mirror). Thanks for the explanations, and hope this will translate into a cleaner anymore consistent sound

Thank you very much for your videos. They're really helpful. I wonder whether you could focus on how to avoid bouncing the bow. Thanks again!

this was very helpful but i was wondering if i may get some advise from you. I have only been playing cello for 11 months and im up so a high school level as far as reading music and such. I've tried asking my instructor but he is a percussionist and cannot help the way i need it... My original instrument is violin (7 year of experience) well anyways when i play cello because of the huge difference between the two bows, well i get this squeaky/ creaky noise. I was wondering how i may possibly prevent that on cello. I am aware the more pressure, the louder and possibly more creaky. but on cello i've tried adjusting my pressure and i still get this noise. what am i doing wrong? also do you have any tips on keeping your left hand relaxed in terms on playing 16th notes across the finger board. id really appreciate a few tips.

My right shoulder hurts. I am pretty sure I could use a refresher on posture and bow hand technique. Do u have a vid on these fundamentals?

It would probably be a good idea for me to get a couple of lessons. After watching this video, it kinda explains why my playing sounds like a bag of cats. I play the guitar, piano and tuba pretty well(though it's been a while for the tuba). I should've taken a more in-depth look at cello technique.
