      "COULD have gotten $50K"
Is not the same as actually selling the thing. The guy was liquidating his father's estate, and COULD have taken the time to properly milk it.

I’m kind of in Helens position rn. I had lost the one woman in my life who made who I was, and when she passed I lost myself, stopped attending school, stopped working, stopped eating, and planning to just end my life. My gf, who has been there for me since before my grief, stayed by my side and even contemplated leaving me whenI was at my lowest point. But she didn’t, she stayed and helped me build myself back up. It’s been two hard years but I work a new job without even having a car to use on a daily basis, I’m studying for my ged and hopefully go to trade school. She’s definitely ahead of me in life so far, but sooner or later, I will be the man and continue to be the man she fell for.

Third story OP is hella classist. From the way she talks you can tell she thinks being uneducated/unemployed is a moral failing, when it truly isn’t.
The girlfriend it seems picks up odd jobs when she can hold them and does the work around the house, she just doesn’t have a permanent 9-5 white collar job. That’s classist, and also ableist.

    • @johnplaysgames3120
      @johnplaysgames3120 หลายเดือนก่อน +75

@@jac0736 I caught that too. Nothing wrong with being a barista, but after all the talk of how the gf doesn't make any money, she doesn't have a good job, she's not his equal financially, etc. the reveal that OP was working at a coffee shop was a bit of a whiplash moment.
Also, although I'm def not supporting OP's delusional persistence in that story, I'm glad someone pointed out that she was from another country and that culture might've played a part in her views on Dean's relationship and gf. That line in Dean's reply - that OP's parents were still in her home country - went by quickly and a lot of people missed it. Once that line landed, her posts stopped giving rich, overeducated Type A to me and started instead giving immigrant with family who've pounded this version of "worthwhile wife" into her head. At that moment, I stopped thinking "this girl crazy" and started just feeling sad for how blindly she's stuck in this worldview that doesn't apply to the world in which she finds herself. That's going to make for a rough ride for her.
Still, if I was Dean, I'd def cut her off. She's not listening to anyone and, culture or no, that's a whole lot of stuff to sort out with someone you're not even dating. Better for him to just say, "No thanks" and block her on everything.

People don't keep up with the values of their relatives collections, and then just want them gone. I know someone who found a 1959 Gibson Flying V at a LANDFILL!! Not to mention also taking care of the home, herself, and still making the time to obviously be an amazing girlfriend who lets her partner know how much she loves him is admirable. And I promise you that she is far from uneducated even without a degree, the amount of medical knowledge you gain from homecare alone is insane. Given the part of Dean's reply that went by quickly - that OP's parents are still in her home country - it makes me think that she might've been raised in a culture that unfortunately does see things that way. There are plenty of places on this planet that still see mental health issues as shameful (or not real), the worth of a person as tied to their education/job, etc. and it's very possibly OP was raised in a country/culture by parents who pounded these ideas into her head. I mean, she's still an a-hole for not backing off when Dean was very clear about his feelings but it's hard to fault a person for believing the things they were raised to believe in a place where everyone around them believes the same thing. We only know what we're taught unless we manage to step outside of that bubble and realize that we can open our own eyes and make our own judgements.
If OP's parents are still in their home country then it's likely that OP is an immigrant, meaning that her attitude is less about being immature and more about a young person in a new-ish country running up against a culture clash that doesn't make sense to them. It's sad, tbh.
All that being said, if I was Dean, I'd still cut her off immediately bc, while he seemed to understand something about her that wasn't 100% clear in the posts and felt bad for her (hence why he stayed in touch even after and kept giving her chances), it's not his responsibility to help her figure it out, especially if she's being such a dick to his gf.

Additional context on the guitar story from someone else who knows guitars:
The average price of an electric guitar is $250 (and you should NEVER buy a guitar priced lower than that.)
A genuine modern-day Telecaster made by Fender will cost you anywhere between $1000-$2500.
A Telecaster made by Fender's Custom Shop, which are made using vintage hardware and usually artificially distressed or aged so they sound and LOOK like they're vintage, will run you closer to $4000-$6000.
So, in my opinion, the guy selling the guitar either took a gander at what custom "vintage" guitars were selling for and priced this one at the lower end because it didn't "look" vintage, or he simply looked up what you could get for a "Fender Telecaster" and doubled the price. In either case, the seller was pricing this guitar for the highest he thought he could, based on its appearance and make/model. The seller thought he was getting a sweet deal on this and was taking OP for a fool, that's why he was pissed enough to require a restraining order when he found out HE was the fool. Don't feel sorry for him. OP is NTA.

@@sydneygorelick7484 I agree that buying an acoustic is a safer bet because any damage to it is going to be way more visible than on an electric, but I disagree that it's less likely to have something wrong with it. Acoustics are precise pieces of engineering held together by nothing but glue and tension. They can get warped and damaged while stored in their case and never played, simply by BEING somewhere that's too dry, let alone being dropped, and once something happens it's never going to sound the same.
Not that first contact is going to make them unplayable by ANY means; I just mean that an electric guitar is going to stay in mint condition almost indefinitely unless you fuck up, but an acoustic is gonna take wear and tear simply by EXISTING. You'll definitely see any damage to one before you buy it, but if you're buying it from a second-hand store I GUARANTEE it has an issue even if it was in perfect condition when it arrived there 🤣

Yeah I had a “friend” talk this way about my relationship, except I was Helen. Thankfully it didn’t go to the same extremes, and she hasn’t messaged my girlfriend to have her explain why she likes me. But we’ve also cut off this friend when we heard from others what she was saying.

Hopefully one day she will get a good reality check and hopefully view people in other ways and care about others wants and needs.

Also, she shares the story with friends, and another woman comes forward and tells her that she received a nude from him as well and had to have her husband call and threaten him to stop. Roma are an ethnic group. They have a millennium of rich history and unfortunately centuries of oppression in Europe and the US. The psychic profession was one of the few they were allowed to practice to make money and had access to while being barred from public education. That also led to a lot of stereotypes about psychics being racial clichés of Romani people. The name of the boho style comes from their cultural wear and practices being fetishised historically and maybe you've heard a racial slur for them that calls them Egyptian based on their dark skin used by someone to mean free-spirited or traveller. This basically has nothing to do with the situation that happened in the story, I just didn't want "She calls herself Roma" be the only context people hear that word in and remember it from.

You can make a case for the guitar buyer being kind of iffy for not telling the guy "Hey man, this guitar is worth a lot of money", but to even slightly blame him for the other guy threatening and harassing both he and his wife is INSANE. It takes no time to research the ballpark value of an item, and anyone with half a brain knows the age and condition of any item can change it's value. That would be like pricing a pristine sports car from the 60s with low mileage at the same price as a pristine sports car from 5 years ago with low mileage; A 5 year old car being in good condition isn't irregular, a 60 year old car being in good condition is and obviously increases the price.

@@Sleve-McDichael It’s not fully a myth. In terms of brain development, adolescence is considered to occur between the ages from 10 to ~24. But the idea that the brain doesn’t finish developing until that age specifically refers to the prefrontal cortex.

Knowing the value of something and truly appreciating it is such a noble and heartfelt honouring of the item is truly great ❤️

The guy describing all of the things he loves about his girlfriend was so sweet, wholesome, and beautiful. He truly loves that girl. The fact that OP couldn’t see it means they are well stranded on delulu island.
The last story definitely didn’t feel right. At first I was like okay, weird, but consenting adults and everything. But then the comment reveals and updates had me yelling “Disgustin’!” I also love that I said that, in that way, the same time Courtney did. 😂 That last one made me feel major ick afterwards. I’m glad the dad was communicating so well with the nanny and helping to make her feel more secure in her job and how uncomfortable this “friend” was making her feel. It was big of him to help pay for her to get her number changed. That OP needs to be on a watchlist if he isn’t already.

The thing with the guitar one is that's it's only worth $50k to the right buyer, and it takes time and effort to find the right buyer, which, given the dude didn't even do the research to figure out the right price before selling it, he probably isn't interested in taking that time or effort. I would personally liken it to my Pokemon video game collection - if I find HeartGold or SoulSilver with a pokewalker at a random garage sale for a couple bucks, I'd probably let them know the potential value but I also wouldn't purchase them for that value.
Probably the same thing here - the buyer probably considered $4k a bargain and therefore worth it, but unless you're already a big collector or the item holds sentimental value specifically to you, you're probably not dropping $50k on said guitar.
