As a cynical American pensioner, I can make a solid guess as to what the CRT will do with the money from those increased fees. I predict that they will give their admins sizable pay raises, yet not spend an extra penny above their current costs of maintaining the canal network. I will further predict that facilities will have an ever-decreasing budget the entire time the fees escalate. The end result will be that the admins will have provided for their own retirement and do exactly nothing for the boating community. Very corporate, in essence, to grant themselves a Golden Parachute while telling everyone else to take a flying leap after a galloping goose. A third prediction is that the CRT will begin issuing sizable "parking fines" for anyone over-staying the allotted time in any visitor moorings, system-wide. I wouldn't be surprised if they begin to try and collect fees from the last owner-of-record of abandoned and sunken boats--or the estate of the last known owners, as well.
Hi Dan 👋 Your predictions raise valid concerns, and it's crucial for the CRT to address them through clear communication and ongoing dialogue with boaters, it has left so many unanswered questions since their announcements were made. All we can hope is that as changes are implemented, they monitor their impact and ensure that they align with the organisation's mission of supporting the boating community. We guess only time will tell the impact 😟 😃
That sounds exactly right the only thing canal river trust care about is there wages. And boaters and there wellbeing last as a boater I see this first hand crumbling infrastructure water points and facility's left is serious disrepair its hard to understand where the licence fee money goes
I really don't think you are far off the mark to be perfectly honest, there is another possibility, and this may be closer to the mark, the Government are pushing for higher tariffs in order to force people back into houses because they are losing rent and property taxes from people living off grid. Just my pennies worth.
CRT is a charity and their increases are primarily due to a 50% reduction in government funding since establishment alongside legacy responsibility for infrastructure such as reservoir’s which have been unfunded for a decade. Their staff pay rises have been less than inflation across the board and as numbers reduce they are relying more on volunteers to do jobs that had been paid
This can't be legal. I won't be paying the extra until we see extra facilities and new locks on our system. I see a lot decreasing, not increasing standards..Thank you for taking the time to do this..
It’s sparked a great deal of controversy and questions! It would be really helpful if the CRT did actually address their plans we think 🤔 we’ve also been told that government are withdrawing funding previously given to help maintain waterways but who knows 😳
Let's hope the CRT provide upgraded facilities for all the narrowboats on the canal network. If your paying that amount to the CRT you deserve the best facilities available.
They are infact cutting lots of amenitys not increasing i spoke to some vollenteers that are leaving because they dont agree with the extra charges the crt has millions in reserve but wont be spending that apart from fat cat salary increases
The problem With upgrading is the canal is effectively historical. So the idea they would be upgraded to say how French are for example. Probably not. They can't afford to maintain it as it stands, even the government have cut founding which Probably the reason for the increase. The other thing is as I understand is that the crt is a charity? . And seems to have more administration then actual on the ground maintenence ( conservation personnel) which as I understand it are only paid minimum wage. Allot are volunteers.
There has been a great deal of debate and protest we think, it is a big rise, unfortunately it could be detrimental to CRT as it could well push boaters away from the canals 🥲
@Sheilabeer,I agree we are pensioners. We were aware of the substantial increases for the next five years from last year. This will have a detrimental effect on us . Fortunately our little beetle boat is 30ft, Those who live and travel the canals will be hit the most, especially like the couple here. But the couple here look like they will handle the increases, or by down sizing.
Nice work on this 😀, it is causing a lot of discussion among boaters, some not very constructive unfortunately. A few comments from perspective as a continuously cruising narrowboater (at the moment) - Before this programme of increases started the income from individual boater licences generated just over 20% of the total operating budget of the CRT, the rest came from government grants, hire boat companies, local councils along the canals, fishing rights, charitable donations, etc. The sharp reduction in government support is driving the need to look for money elsewhere. My licence originally ran from from March 1st to February 28th/29th because I bought my boat in March (2018). One year I got a Gold licence because I expected to spend time on the Thames so my renewal date was shifted to Jan 1st because that's how the Gold licence runs. I assume other licences still run from different months depending on when a boat is operated on CRT canals. I have often travelled between the Kennet and Avon canal at Reading to the Oxford canal at Oxford and for those trips I get a 7 day licence from the Environment Agency. They have daily licence rates but if you spend three nights on the Thames a weekly licence is cheaper, last July it cost me £84 for my 59 foot narrowboat and meant I could stop along the way and explore Abingdon for a few days. When the CRT sent a survey to all licence holders about two years ago to ask how we would like to see the additional licence costs shared out I said I would be prepared to pay a surcharge for my continuous cruiser licence because I've often had assistance in person or by telephone advice from the CRT when travelling in the winter months, often in the middle of the night for some reason. Finally, it doesn't really apply to this discussion but I would like to say a huge thank you to the army of trained volunteers who give their time to help keep the network flowing alongside the full time paid staff. I am mostly single-handed when cruising and meeting a group of volunteers on a flight of locks is always welcome. They always seem to be cheerful, helpful, and informative, whatever the weather.
Thank you for your thoughtful perspective and kind words! It' does go to show the challenges and intricacies of the topic and we have seen so much debate on social media, as you say some not so helpful! Your insights into the funding sources and changes in licensing renewals shed light on the complexities involved in maintaining and operating the waterways and the different types of licence also. We definitely agree the volunteers on the waterways are absolutely amazing we've benefitted from them on our travels as well as some fabulous lock keepers on the Thames too! 😃
As a subscriber to several narrowboat channels its always pleasing to discover a new one as I am obsessed with all things canals. Have subscribed so I never miss another. Look forward to watching more.
An additional thought to this is that it is a buyers market for boats at the moment , there is very little movement in the 2nd hand market , I know very nice boats that have been up for sale for over a year and arent even getting any tyre kickers taking a look. It will be interesting at Crick show this year how the manufacturers are faring , especially the widebeam ones this must be a nail in the coffin for sure.
Thank you for this information. I was aware of an increase in the cry license but didn't realise it was this bad. I am selling my house at the moment and having viewed a couple of boats was seriously considering buying one. Not any more! These increases are ridiculous and will price me out of the game. It would be just as expensive as living in my house. Once again many thanks for this video.
We're glad the video provided you with valuable insight, but we're sorry to hear about the impact of the fee increases on your plans. It's disappointing when financial considerations stand in the way of pursuing something you're passionate about. While the current situation may seem discouraging, We hope you'll keep exploring your options. Sometimes, creative solutions or alternative paths emerge when faced with challenges. Best of luck with your house sale, and remember, the boating world may still have surprises in store for you down the line. Don't give up hope just yet! If you have any questions or need further support, feel free to reach out. 😊
I would certainly think again about going to live on a boat - We live on our boat and are worried sick on how we will continue to pay our bills with all of the increases - we are pensioners on fixed incomes and get no benefits.
Just coming up to retirement and was thinking about a canal boat. However have changed my mind now, what with all these charges, not forgetting marina charges annual maintenance and insurance and then your council tax on top. You will be looking at nearly 10,000 a year soon just in taxes. One way or another they will try and rob you of every pound you have. There will soon be lots of boats going cheap.
Really think you should listen to people that are continuous cruisers rather than folk that cannot get their point across as they are not sure about anything. Looking for views
I have addressed these rises with CRT and the wide beam surcharge. It is applicable for the additional utilities that wide beams use. I can't think of anything I use that a narrowbeam doesn't. CRT explained that we are wider than a narrowboat (no $£%& Sherlock) therefore we should pay more than a narrowboat. Even though narrowbeams have access to far more of the canal system than we do and therefore use more "ameneties" . They even want to charge more for continuous cruisers because, heaven forbid" we want to live on our boats. At least the money is going to a good cause, the CRT's Chief Executive Officers remuneration. On 8th July he received an annual salary of £175,000 plus up to £14000 pension contribution plus company car allowance of £9408 and private health insurance of £1415. In 2024 it is estimated to be around a total of £240,000. Compare this to the average CEO pay at large charities which rose to £175,000 in 2023. Of course other CRT management remunerations will have risen accordingly. Am I being too cynical, or is a lot of the licence fee rises being spent on people doing the same job (or less due to boaters leaving the cut) as they were years ago.
Crazy isn’t it! We’ve heard the same about the CEO does make the rises a bitter pill to swallow. We don’t mind paying more to support the waterways but not to line pockets! 😬😳
The government has cut funding to the CRT so unfortunately they have to get the money from somewhere and that is from the boater's, but I didn't think it would be that much and what happens after 2029 what will the standard licence be to add the extra money on to. Good vlog cheers Keith
Most definitely 👍🏻 CRT have said these rises are just over the next 5 years, we guess to make up for lost funds from government. We’re assuming then it should just be a rise with the rate of inflation thereafter 🤔😁
Its another example of the disgrace of big firms making massive increases on the back of whatever reason they feel like coming up with, with the attitude of ' they've got no choice so sod them '
You know my boat at Cookham , I pulled it straight off CRT this year and now pay £1458 for this year to the EA. With the CRT it was £1505 for 23 and would have been £1596 for 24 , however this is before these huge raft of rises kick in. Other boaters we know on The Thames have done the same. The EA wont pull the same stunt because they're not a charity facing a funding cut. Despite having never been on a canal we were happy to contribute but not with this new nonsense double penalising CC ers and widebeams . I hear that Richard Parry CEO of CRT is on twice the annual salary of the Prime Minister😮
Hi 👋🏻 hope you’re doing ok with all the crazy flooding 😳 Yes we really don’t blame you, if we return to the Thames unfortunately we will do exactly the same thing, the CRT could lose quite a bit of revenue from those boaters now just getting an EA licence 🤔 Wow that’s a big wage! 😬😳
Indeed it is , I dont even think they considered that a lot of boaters would excercise that option , they probably thought we were a captive audience. Scaffold poles are keeping us safe from ending up on the bank and occassional use of waders😅
Well done you. It is a horrific increase. Is this not because the government is withdrawing or reducing its funding over the coming five years ? Well done you tho. Very very informative. ❤
Interesting vlog - and thanks for doing all the hard work. A few questions: (1) I always thought the cost of the home mooring (i.e. in a marina) was down to the marina owners and that differed depending on what they offered (i.e. a chandlery, diesel, gas, laundry, etc) and where in the country they were (near London being more expensive than in the middle of nowhere up North)? So what does the 26% cover and do the CTR pass it on to the owners of the marina who are responsible anyway for the upkeep etc. (2) Is there a specific cost for Cruisers as they ard the boats that go fast on the waterways and create the wash that causes the banks to disintegrate and drowns the nests of moorhens etc. I know that the Government initially subsidised those who brought the canals back to life and that it was probably never going to be a 'forever' subsidy so I can understand the need for AN increase - especially as there are so many more boats traversing them now which adds to wear and tear as well as bashed locks and increased water lost etc., but will the 'carrot' for the additional money go towards adding/maintaining better the water points, refuse bins, toilet clearing facilities, towpaths, moorings, etc? Is this cost for continuous cruisers the equivalent to Council Tax for landlubbers - which also increases year on year - and the Water cost?
All really good points Jill, we would hope that it would mean that the facilities and maintenance of the canals would improve but we guess that’s up to the CRT unfortunately our crystal ball isn’t real 😂 We’re pretty sure marinas are completely separate. A lot of good questions let’s hope CRT address them 😊
Nice one guys.. .what hair I used to have has fallen out watching this lol.. used to have more hair then the Jackson 5 😝.. might sell the boat a buy a paddle board to live on lol👍
Absolutly agree with the increase in all aspects, time CC's started to pay a more realistice fee for the service they use. It costs me 3k to keep my boat in a marina plus the full licence fee regardless of how much time I spend on the actual canal.
we know it is going to cost us more, and as traders we will be paying even more than folks who are just cruising, anyway thanks for your time taken to do this vlog
Interesting to compare with the Environment Agency Thames licences. That works on square meterage, Max beam X Length. Annual licences are the cheapest pro rata, and the day licence is the most expensive pro rata. Business users, including rentals, pay a higher base rate.
It amazes me so much that people are penalized for having larger boats!! Why. Do you cause more damage to locks etc.The answer is probably no you don't, and you probably don't use locks as often , you probably don't use water facilities as often , and you are probably more careful about mooring. Enjoying your vlogs , keep it up😊
It is a bit crazy, in fact we are very careful as the canal can do a lot of damage to our boat with over hanging branches and debris in the water! We now need our prop fixed and a new window frame! So glad you’re enjoying the vlogs 😁🙏
Thanks folks for adding to my depression 😂 I'm on the same sized boat as you, continuous cruising. Apparently I use more water than a narrow boat, think widebeam displacement versus narrow boat in a lock? And widebeam continuous cruisers use services more(!) CRT needs better funding model, but Parry et al need to go and be replaced by someone who understands boating and stops referring to us as itinerants 🤬 Good to see you both though 😅 And ig government puts my pension up at the same rate.......😂😂😂
Oh no 😆 It's frustrating when decisions seem to overlook the realities of life on the water, especially when it comes to funding and understanding usage patterns. Hang in there, and keep your spirits up, sending good vibes for a pension increase 😆
Again and again, the average man in the street is forced to make way for the people that can afford this. Either that or the people that have a minimal budget, then these people are forced to cut corners in other areas !! Well done great Britain ,again. I am now putting back my retirement by 3 years! 70 retirement now , fantastic!!!
Oh apologies for that 😬 standard allows you to travel on waterways owned by the CRT so for us the Kennet and Avon Canal, Gold is for both CRT waters and environment agency such as the Thames 😁
nobody can really say what the rate of inflation will be , ,what the surcharge that the CRT are applying is not governed by law, a lot of companies ie BT are adding a surcharge ,its just to get more money , CRT should supply a chart with the prices on
May I say as the inspiration for this video how much I appreciate the effort you have put in trying to address my queries. I absolutely trust what you have stated mindful of all the relevant caveats you advised of. I think the main thing your video has achieved that it had renewed my aspiration for WB living. I will definitely be interested in your further boat viewings as I now feel confident regarding your advices fully accepting the caveats etc. Certainly the figure I was given on a TH-cam post of £6500 has been I feel dispelled by your calculations. I'm sorry to have have given you what must have been a fair bit of brainache. However your video is as far as I am aware the best representation of what is likely to occur. That in it self will allow those seeking WB life to consider it viable come 2028. It is still a lot of money. It might be useful to do a direct comparison video for NB costs on the same basis without a home mooring. Essentially to give a direct comparison with a WB and a NB. It could be that those of us determining to take the plunge might decide the cheaper cost of a NB licence is more viable than a WB licence come 2028. From my own perspective mindful of watching your videos etc I am now not put off by the approximate £3500 cost in 2029 etc. As you have suggested the amenity value of a WB is worth even the £3500 cost in 2028. I fully appreciate the limitations of a WB regarding canal accessibility. But you seem to have no issues. That gives me confidence in the WB lifestyle. So thanks for that. I hope I didn't take up too much of your time for what was no easy task that I set you. I am most thankful for your video and commend you for all your efforts. It won't just be me you have assisted. Perhaps on the basis of a watching brief on these increasing CRT licence costs you would do a video every year based on what the new known costs will be!? I believe your video will be seized on by many in the boating community as the most informative advice as to what the CRT is playing at. SORRY to put you to all the work but I really do appreciate your efforts. I'm now subscribed! Thanks again for your always entertaining and helpful videos. 19:52
It would be interesting using your excellent crystal ball as to what you reckon the revised costs would be for CC NB and WB users? Based on those guestimate costings could be a deciding factor for many to give up the boating lifestyle. Certainly pensions aren't increasing to perhaps afford these new licence costs. Many boaters are surviving on pensions. In light of what you have ascertained many boaters will have to consider whether the life is viable anymore!? One thing I was thinking. Would many single crewed decide to double crew for viability. So get rid of one boat and share! I appreciate many boaters are very independent but needs must and all that! Would double crewing be better than neither being able to afford the boating lifestyle!?
You make some very valid points, wonder if people would go for a boat share 🤔 it would make sense! We may well do a NB comparison after our brains stop hurting lol 😂
Surely the increases to the licence is due to the Government withdrawing funding. This has been anticipated for quite a while. So when you state ‘I wonder what the CRT will be doing with the money’, then I guess it is simply to keep the canals open.
The loss of funding was surely relevant to the reason for your vlog. Unfortunately, you never mentioned their loss of funding. When we lived on the canals, we felt that the CRT had an incredibly difficult job with the money they had in trying to maintain a 200 year old system.
@@janebaker966 the fact that the government is withdrawing funding was still relevant to the vlog and should have been mentioned in order to offer a balanced view. CRT has to find the extra money somewhere otherwise the canals fall into disrepair and everyone will then become a landlubber. At the end of the day it is a Trust heavily relying on volunteers which will have to become self funding in the near future. What would you propose as an alternative?
These calculations are way off because a portion of the Gold Licence fee goes to EA, it is only the CRT portion that is affected by the increases. There is no way of knowing what the Gold Licence cost will be because they don't announce it until December each year. It's possible to work out the extra cost on a standard crt licence though as the fees are available online.
That is why we said there was an element of crystal ball gazing, we said the gold license was difficult to work out, however our calculations are on normal CRT licensing 😊
The gold licence is impossible to work out as there is nothing to base it on. A standard licence for my 66 x 12 barge is £1315.87 and the same will cost ( assuming a 6% increase as well as the surcharges ) £1841.06. My Gold Licence was £1719.88 this year but, as I pointed out, only part of that will be subject to CRT's surcharges & increase, the rest will be subject to EA's increase which is proposed to be 9%. The print out of your Gold Licence renewal should tell you how the Gold Licence is apportioned, unfortunately I didn't save mine.
Interesting and well presented video. Point of order with my clever Richard hat on, CRT charge licence fees. Are the license fees in the video applicable to visiting American boaters? 😇
Guessing that you mean if you hire a boat? For that, the person who hires the boat for the vacation doesn't pay the license, however it could mean a price rise on the hire of the boat, but truly we don't know that one!
great vlog guys well if i had a boat and i would send them vlogs off damage done CRT not doing repairs to boat and if they dont pay then dont pay ex fees if everyone does they want be able to take everyone t court people power just say no to ex fees
Thank you Nicholas, we tend to agree that we do wish the canals were maintained better and we guess there is so much debate about this but whatever the outcome boats are getting damaged due to overgrown areas and debris and things being dumped in the water 😔
The biggest thing i find totally discussting is the salary of the ceo or the crt mr parry he took last year over 270k over double the prime ministers salary im pretty sure rishi does more that fat cat parry there is also several crt staff on over 150 k a year and dont forget your going to be getting less for your money anyway with rubbish bins taken away etc
@@WidebeamandWellingtons im really sure mr parry doesnt have half the workload of the pm of country and crt is SUPPOSED to be a charity but so many people on massive salarys disscussting
At 3:10 you state that 'the' licence runs from January to January - that is only correct for EA licences. The CRT licence period is for 12 months from the date you paid for it it. I suspect that what you mean is that YOUR licence runs from January to January ...
Hi yes our licence does because it’s a CRT gold licence, the gold runs from January to January which we’ve based our calculations on, we didn’t make that clear enough sorry 😔
Hi Mary, the 6% is the rate of inflation rise each year, which has been confirmed for next year but we have predicted after that. We hope it will be less! ☺️
We have stated that we were asked if we could do this video and that a lot of assumptions are made but it gives folk an idea of what they might be facing. It’s been received very well 😁
Narrowboat continuous cruiser here, playing devils advocate. chocolate orange is £1.50 now it was in the pound shop last year. Everything seems to be going up 50% or so. On top of those normal inflation costs, crt have a massive cut in funding. Something has got to give somewhere.
You are right, everything is going up! I think a lot of people are quite cross at how much the people at the top of the CRT are being paid though apparently more than the PM! 😳
@@WidebeamandWellingtons lol Rishi is making billions as he’s funnelling tax payers money to his wife’s family business. I saw an article about the crt pay and it’s decided independently they don’t increase their own pay like some companies it’s decided for them.
@@WidebeamandWellingtons It is a subject that many boaters feel upset about, and leads to many different opinions on what is right and wrong. Especially when you add Marina fees. We do have a home mooring and cruise from April to October, but our neighbours who are elderly, and I am sure they won’t mind, but are residential and do not cruise, I think CRT could reduce their license as they just float on the water.
Oh bless them, yes it doesn’t seem fair for them. There are some marinas out there that do have private waters and no licence is needed but guess they’re probably few and far between 😔
That’s a big increase a Liberty taking a leaf out of the greedy fuel companies gas electric etc.if the CRT look after the boaters and improve boating facilities then fine but it’s if
Hi 👋🏻 We have a gold licence which we’ve based the figures on, that runs from January. However a basic CRT licence runs from whichever month you first bought it. Does get a bit confusing 🫤
No as the first figure is the standard year on year rise that would normally happen then the surcharge on top. So the following year would be the standard price with its increase that year plus that year’s surcharge 😊 it’s all very complicated 😬
Hi ! I think you are looking to retire in the near future ? Will you be selling your home and Richards business when and if you move aboard full time. Will you be exploring the other rivers of Europe when the time comes. When I have been on the rivers in France and Germany I have enjoyed seeing the commercial traffic but have not noticed boats like yours. It was probably the time of year. I don't mean to pry but am very interested in your future plans as there are many here in the colonies who do this both on land and on the water. I would opt for the boat , but that is just a personal preference. Motorhomes have become problematic in the past few years. Even with Richards skill set there are issues that can only be solved at the factory. If they are willing, which seems to be a big issue. A little like what you are experiencing. you seem to be moving at a good pace so that helps. Sorry to be so long winded . Take care, Pat for Twiglet
Hi 👋🏻 we’d love to retire but it’s not in the cards unfortunately just yet. We would look to probably rent our property to move aboard full time, it was supposed to be on the cards this year but unfortunately circumstances changed so we’ve had to postpone. We would love to travel to other countries but would need a sea-worthy boat ours is only classed for inland waterways but that would be the dream 😁 pat passed on 🐾🐾🐶😁
Sorry to hear you have had to postpone your plans. Things happen for a reason. As long as you are healthy you will get there. Keep up the good work. Pat for Twiglet@@WidebeamandWellingtons
looks like you have thinks well planned out. You both have a good head on your shoulders. It will eventually work out and you will enjoy your life on the water. @@WidebeamandWellingtons
Im not a canal boater but i think THEY (whoever they are,but they do exist) are busy shutting off all the "escape routes". The days when you could live practically for free ,those days are gone. I used to think that "paying for infrastructure" was reasonable, and it is but its been hijacked and in all sorts of areas of life its being used as a pretext to make life unaffordable, even if you live in a standard house, and if it costs as much to live on a boat as to own and run a house,it takes away the point of it. I hate that word INFRASTRUCTURE now whenever I hear it now I know its cover for a scam.
Reading all the latest comments it is clear that there are some very disappointed potential boaters who have been put off from the boating aspiration. I think you alluded to the fact that deterring new boaters and existing ones could result in the CRT receiving less in licence fees than they do now!! Sort of pennywise but pound foolish. Many existing boaters won't be able to afford these increased costs. Or could we see WB users downsizing to a NB!? It wouldn't be the end of the world and for many it would be the only way to afford the canal life. So it could be that WB will be going for knockdown prices while NB prices increase due to demand. I'm sure many more boaters will get wind of all you have discussed and revised domestic decisions will be made. I wonder what the tipping point is for your average boater to not be able to afford the 2028 prices? The UK canal network effectively houses about 35000. Probably more for double crewed boats. So maybe about 45000. If boating is nade unviable for many then they become homeless and a Council has to house them in very expensive Temporary Accommodation. So cost for Govt and Councils actually increase! Unintended or oerhaps intended consequences! 19:52
It throws up so many questions as you say. Thing is Narrowboats aren’t necessarily cheaper in terms of buying and running one, some are just as expensive as wide beams, who knows the answer 😳
@@WidebeamandWellingtons Really pardon my ignorance but I considered that a WB would cost more to operate than a NB. Especially with the licence cost. You appear to intimate that really the only additional cost of a WB over a NB would be the additional licence cost. So I guess it is this additional licence cost that will be the only deciding factor as to WB viability. I know you are giving your brains a rest after all the work I put you to. But it would be useful as a comparison as to what the WB and NB licence costs would be come 2028. For many that could be a deciding factor as to whether to go WB or NB. For those on tight budgets that additional WB licence cost could be a deciding factor to go for a NB or to downsize from WB to NB. Though I suspect with a bit of proverbial belt tightening WB owners will get by and new aspirant WB owners won't be put off. WB do have that little bit more of a luxury lifestyle albeit at seemingly a slightly higher cost. But we won't really know that well until you feel up to applying yourselves to the calculations!! Quite frankly your excellent vlog deserves a link on the CRT site as your assessment is far more understandable than the way the CRT have displayed the information. Your brilliant interpretation of what the CRT information all meant greatly assisted me. I just couldn't quite get what the CRT was on about. You shone a light on potential realities. Nobody else has done such a good job of explaining things. All we need now is that WB and NB comparison; but only when you feel up to it!!!!! Your intellectual powers bring clarity to what I consider is CRT obsfucation. So well done you. You have bigger brains than most of us!!
@WidebeamandWellingtons Just a heads up but Sunday 3rd March had the Countryfile BBC programme include items on the Canal network and funding etc. Just thought it might make an interesting update to your previous helpful video on WB costs. You could have a go at doing similar for NB as you did for WB. The Countryfile items give an overarching perspective on the issues facing the UK canal network. Your informed spin on the situation I'm sure could fill a 30 min video. You might even be able to obtain permission to use the Countryfile footage to emphasise the issues that boaters are going to suffer etc. With your insights into increased costs etc perhaps the BBC might do a follow-up using your knowledge as further information for the wider BBC audience. Today from what I've seen you have been the only Vloggers to give these very serious matters your very informed opinion Now to do it for the NB community I get yours is principally a WB thing but you are the only ones that have given a very professional take on what it means for boaters with these increased costs. The CRT is definitely under the Govt cosh but must be careful not to price boaters off the canals. There was some very surprising information and how the CRT is to respond. I'm sure you could make a very useful video about all this. Watch the Countryfile programme from start to finish on the player and take notes! I'm sure this would assist in a suitable Vlog script with these important matters. Hopefully your brains have recovered from the previous WB costings exercise and your're already for a similar NB one!?

As a cynical American pensioner, I can make a solid guess as to what the CRT will do with the money from those increased fees. I predict that they will give their admins sizable pay raises, yet not spend an extra penny above their current costs of maintaining the canal network. I will further predict that facilities will have an ever-decreasing budget the entire time the fees escalate. The end result will be that the admins will have provided for their own retirement and do exactly nothing for the boating community.
Your probably right the haves corporates and have nots the rest of us.
Us boaters seem to be the last to hear anything regarding crt unless theres money involved@@WidebeamandWellingtons
Let's hope the CRT provide upgraded facilities for all the narrowboats on the canal network. If your paying that amount to the CRT you deserve the best facilities available.
We can but hope 🤞🏻I think a lot of us would just be happy with the canals being maintained a little better 😬😁
Can’t see it happening
They are infact cutting lots of amenitys not increasing i spoke to some vollenteers that are leaving because they dont agree with the extra charges the crt has millions in reserve but wont be spending that apart from fat cat salary increases
The problem
With upgrading is the canal is effectively historical.
Are the CRT trying to push boaters of the canals? Not everyone can afford that kind of money especially if you rely on a pension
There has been a great deal of debate and protest we think, it is a big rise, unfortunately it could be detrimental to CRT as it could well push boaters away from the canals 🥲
Yep absolutely they are , they want reduced wear and tear and more paddle boarders and kayakers.
As a non boat person It doesn’t matter how you look at it, ITS A RIP OFF.
It is a big increase 😞
I would like to thank both of you for bringing these price raises to peoples attention. Please keep up with your good work.
Thank you Peter ☺️🙏
It's all speculation, try doing some investigating yourself and you will find more accurate information
Nice work on this 😀, it is causing a lot of discussion among boaters, some not very constructive unfortunately. A few comments from perspective as a continuously cruising narrowboater (at the moment) -
Before this programme of increases started the income from individual boater licences generated just over 20% of the total operating budget of the CRT, the rest came from government grants, hire boat companies, local councils along the canals, fishing rights, charitable donations, etc.
We watch lots of you tubers and you are the first to address this, so well done.
PS nice haircut Hayley keep it that way (from the hubby 😂) ❤
Aww thank you, was a difficult topic and does require speculation and we guess could change! Thanks to your hubby 😂😁
I agree on the haircut - I'm so tired of almost every female on the planet thinking she has to have a Barbie hairdo !
As a subscriber to several narrowboat channels its always pleasing to discover a new one as I am obsessed with all things canals. Have subscribed so I never miss another. Look forward to watching more.
Aww thank you so much for subscribing 😁
An additional thought to this is that it is a buyers market for boats at the moment , there is very little movement in the 2nd hand market , I know very nice boats that have been up for sale for over a year and arent even getting any tyre kickers taking a look.
It will be interesting at Crick show this year how the manufacturers are faring , especially the widebeam ones this must be a nail in the coffin for sure.
Yes you’re right there! We’re planning to go to Crick it will be very interesting 🤔
Unfortunately and sadly, we think you could well be right! 😞
If it's the rate of inflation that's ok but where is the big wad of cash coming from each year
Its another example of the disgrace of big firms making massive increases on the back of whatever reason they feel like coming up with, with the attitude of ' they've got no choice so sod them '
Very sad for many that just won't be able to afford it 😔
This rise in licence will mean less widebeams being sold for sure
Unfortunately you could be right 😔
You know my boat at Cookham , I pulled it straight off CRT this year and now pay £1458 for this year to the EA.
Hi 👋🏻 hope you’re doing ok with all the crazy flooding 😳
Yes we really don’t blame you, if we return to the Thames unfortunately we will do exactly the same thing, the CRT could lose quite a bit of revenue from those boaters now just getting an EA licence 🤔
Wow that’s a big wage!
Yes we believe so! And thank you ☺️
Interesting vlog - and thanks for doing all the hard work.
All really good points Jill, we would hope that it would mean that the facilities and maintenance of the canals would improve but we guess that’s up to the CRT unfortunately our crystal ball isn’t real 😂
We’re pretty sure marinas are completely separate.
A lot of good questions let’s hope CRT address them 😊
It’s spelled “licence”. License with an ‘s’ is the American version!
Oops oh well our friends across the pond won’t mind! 😂
the other way is " mugged"
Nice one guys.. .what hair I used to have has fallen out watching this lol.. used to have more hair then the Jackson 5 😝.. might sell the boat a buy a paddle board to live on lol👍
We’ve got a paddle board we can rent you Ron 😬😂😂😂
@@WidebeamandWellingtons haha 👍
Absolutly agree with the increase in all aspects, time CC's started to pay a more realistice fee for the service they use. It costs me 3k to keep my boat in a marina plus the full licence fee regardless of how much time I spend on the actual canal.
Yes marinas definitely are not the cheap option 😬
we know it is going to cost us more, and as traders we will be paying even more than folks who are just cruising, anyway thanks for your time taken to do this vlog
Oh yes of course guess it will affect you guys even more! Hope it doesn’t affect you too badly 😢🤞🏻
@@WidebeamandWellingtons we shall see
Interesting to compare with the Environment Agency Thames licences. That works on square meterage, Max beam X Length. Annual licences are the cheapest pro rata, and the day licence is the most expensive pro rata. Business users, including rentals, pay a higher base rate.
Yes definitely 👍🏻 we think the EA licences will possibly end up cheaper in the long run but who knows 🤷♀️🤷♂️
It is a real shame, hopefully though we have estimated on the higher side fingers crossed 🤞
You didn’t explain the difference between gold and standard, I think you assume we are already boaters
Oh apologies for that 😬 standard allows you to travel on waterways owned by the CRT so for us the Kennet and Avon Canal, Gold is for both CRT waters and environment agency such as the Thames 😁
They really don't like Wide Beams do they :(
It does feel that way 🥲
nobody can really say what the rate of inflation will be , ,what the surcharge that the CRT are applying is not governed by law, a lot of companies ie BT are adding a surcharge ,its just to get more money , CRT should supply a chart with the prices on
Yes we had to make some assumptions on the rate of inflation. I guess as that element is unknown CRT can’t put out prices as that rate is unknown 🤔
Aww thank you 🙏 we’re so glad you liked it! It did take some brain power but judging from the views and comments we think it has been appreciated 😁
How many bothered to attend the protest in Birmingham? Not many, at least we who took the time to attend can say that we tried.
We guess a lot of people might have been working hard to pay for the fees! It’s all very difficult 😞
You all travel on the same canals if anything narrow boats have more choice and mileage due to their size a wide beam is being punished for no reason.
Yes very true!
Interesting to see how they can justify these increases
We think they have outlined some plans but it would be nice to see more specific details.
The budget will be fudged to spend all the excess money.!! Lots of contracting companies rubbing their hands together!!
We do know that the CRT is losing previous government funding, doesn't help boaters though 😢
Surely the increases to the licence is due to the Government withdrawing funding. This has been anticipated for quite a while. So when you state ‘I wonder what the CRT will be doing with the money’, then I guess it is simply to keep the canals open.
Yes absolutely people are also hoping that they might also be maintained a little better too 🤞🏻
The loss of funding was surely relevant to the reason for your vlog. Unfortunately, you never mentioned their loss of funding. When we lived on the canals, we felt that the CRT had an incredibly difficult job with the money they had in trying to maintain a 200 year old system.
Until even a few months ago that is what I would have thought. But now I know it's to shut off all chances to live "off grid" or out of "the system".
That looks like the end of my retirement dream😢
Oh no 😢 that’s too sad! Hopefully 🤞🏻 it might change ☺️
@@WidebeamandWellingtons Nothing so deep. It was a tongue in cheek comment pointing out the spelling error in the title. 😇

Noticed the %age each year is also 6% over the previous year. Could this be what they mean by the 6% increase??
Hi Mary, the 6% is the rate of inflation rise each year, which has been confirmed for next year but we have predicted after that. We hope it will be less! ☺️
Really think people should make sure what they are 100% sure of before making videos

Thank you 🙏 very kind of you 😁
@@WidebeamandWellingtons It is a subject that many boaters feel upset about, and leads to many different opinions on what is right and wrong.
There are some marinas out there that do have private waters and no licence is needed but guess they’re probably few and far between 😔
That’s a big increase a Liberty taking a leaf out of the greedy fuel companies gas electric etc.if the CRT look after the boaters and improve boating facilities then fine but it’s if
We are keeping our fingers crossed 🤞
CRT said it’s to make up for government funding being taken away. Best I stop there 😂
Well yes, that’s a whole different conversation and very sad 😔
It was always going to be stopped they signed up to that agreement
Why can't they do it the year starting Jan 1st?
Hi 👋🏻 We have a gold licence which we’ve based the figures on, that runs from January. However a basic CRT licence runs from whichever month you first bought it. Does get a bit confusing 🫤
If the increase is £2036.79, wouldn't the following year be
£2036.79 + the 32% and so on and so on?
No as the first figure is the standard year on year rise that would normally happen then the surcharge on top. So the following year would be the standard price with its increase that year plus that year’s surcharge 😊 it’s all very complicated 😬
Interesting video thank for sharing 👍
Thank you 🙏

Crazy aye! They’ve got boaters over a barrel it seems 😳😬
Today from what I've seen you have been the only Vloggers to give these very serious matters your very informed opinion
Now to do it for the NB community
I get yours is principally a WB thing but you are the only ones that have given a very professional take on what it means for boaters with these increased costs.
Ah thanks for this, look out this Saturday as we’ve massaged the brains and tackled the Narrowboat costings, hope it helps 😁
Would like to know if dis are monthly or yearly fees? 😂
Yearly! Thank goodness 😅
Don't tell me they are going up .Funny how things always go up never down
Isn’t it just! 😳😂
No licence fee on the sea ;)
Woohoo for you guys! Perhaps it’s time for a change 😂
No licence fee is the only thing that's cheaper about being on the sea though . . . 😳
Drop anchor on the Solent like us 😂.
I'd like to know how a wide beam cost more in utility, its a ridiculous excuse.
Mmm 🤔 it does seem strange doesn’t it!
The spelling is ..... Licence
Yep 👍🏻 thanks
There is no extra money, as they loose government funding, so all they are doing is making up the shortfall
Very true, there is though some controversy about how much those at the top are earning 😳
Wait i need a new BBC licence.....We are sorry we need to refund our .....whats it's names...yep

It’s all very difficult and everyone’s circumstances are different. We are hoping we’ve overestimated 🫤🙏
A lot of mony to live in a ditch.

I know what I’d like to rattle….
CRT LAWSUITS . UK LEGAL CASE . SUE CRT. FOR MENTAL STRESS HEALTH ISSHUE.............In the UK, the equivalent of representing yourself in court, known as “pro se” in the US, is referred to as “litigant in person”. This means you are handling your own legal case without the assistance of a solicitor or barrister.
It’s all very tricky though, the government has also removed their funding 😳
The Licence noun. To license. verb. UK
Yep already noted! 😁
