Nixi is a Tibetan village in Shangri-La, and was a part of the the Ancient Tea Horse Road. It has more than 2,000-year's history of potting. Due to its special way of firing, the pottery turns out black. As a result, people call them Nixi black pottery.
Apart from black pottery, Nixi is also home to Nixi chicken. These chicken is no heavier than 1 kg after being raised for 2 years. Once cooked in Nixi black pottery, the chicken tastes extremely good. Do have a try when you visit Shangri-La.

I can't get enough of these videos. I wish I could trade my office job and city house for a simpler life like hers. I don't mean that in an offensive way either. She puts so much care and effort into her work. Imagine living there, you'd never be bored. There's always work that needs to be done. I think it's a little ironic because I'm sure a lot of people who do hard labor all day wish they could trade for an office job and a house in suburbia. Not me. I grew up in nature, and I want to go back.
I was the first generation of my family to not grow up on a farm, but that doesn't mean my grandparents didn't put me to work whenever we went to visit! They lived just outside of town, so we'd visit several times a week and I have fond memories of the work I did in my grandfather's orchard and vineyard and my grandmother's big garden.
After many years of saving, my husband and I just bought a house with 2 acres and whenever we tell any of our city friends how much land we have, they freak out. My country friends understand that 2 acres isn't enough to do everything we wanted. We're very happy with it, though! Can't wait until early spring, we moved too late and missed planting dates for autumn crops here.

I am tired of throw away culture. I want to go live in a little farm house with some chickens and enjoy life.

As a Chinese American, I've lived with these kinds of vessels my entire life and never thought about how they were made. My family also use many other kinds of humble handicrafts you can still buy at your nearby Chinatown. As a kid, I was a bit embarrassed whenever non-Asian friends saw these things in my house. Now years later, when I watch Apenji, Liziqi, Xiaoxi, I am captivated by these objects and the skill of the makers.
It’s far better than teflon n chemical based cutleries n pots my childhood was simple n in countryside I can definitely say it was the best life thou slow but definetely healthy n balanced.

as a native american who does pottery too, seeing a lot of the same techniques and the beautiful work you did. makes me just happy. keep on preserving your traditions. as they are needed. now if only it's be awesome if we had the same clays as yours to make black pottery.

You can do this. In the 80s my art teacher led a small after school group to a clay pit on her fathers land. Taught us from beginning to end how to make clay from scratch. Somewhere in my stored things is an old red beat up mug I made with the clay. No where as beautiful as Penji but I love it anyhoo.
Very hard work to make useful things from scratch.
How satisfying is that young lady? Making your own beautiful pot to cook your dinner in. It doesn't get any better than that!
