Like when someone assumes someone is straight, it's not offensive at all, but as soon as someone thinks that person is not straight, suddenly it's an issue. Like when celebs get angry at their young gay fans for seeing gay subtext in their stuff, but they are fine with the straight people assuming that the celeb is just straight without the celeb ever clarifying that they were. It's annoying because a lot of queer subtext is pretty valid, but the artist will put down anyone for assuming anything non-straight about anything they do, even when it is clear that there is queer subtext. I think that's why I like Taylor swift, she isn't clear about her own implications of some queer themes in her career, but she also won't put down her gay fans for pointing out queer subtext because she knows that it could be heard that way and she knows that she isn't exactly clear on how she identifies.

I’ll never forget this one girl telling an entire class in perfect confidence that being LGBTQ+ isn’t a choice, everyone is born straight and cis and people just act like they’re not because “society has pressured them into thinking that it’s a good thing.” I wanted to leap across the classroom and slap her but I didn’t. And our teacher AGREED WITH HER. Also, I was raised Christian my entire life, and one of the things that was presented time and time again was that Christians will be hated by the world outside. “We have to be ready to defend ourselves because people will be hateful to us. We just have to show them the love of God because Christians are loving people who’ll be attacked by outside forces.” The thing that made me start questioning my faith was the fact that when I was introduced to the real world, no longer censored, the exact opposite was true. Christians are one of the most hateful groups on the planet. I’m an atheist. I don’t think there’s a God or an afterlife. But there is nothing inherently wrong with religion. It gives people hope and fulfillment and connects them with others, and I don’t hate on people simply for being religious. However, I don’t think it’s okay to terrify kids with the idea of Hell, to the point that I prayed the prayer to be saved every night for several weeks, in case I didn’t do it right and would go to Hell. I don’t think it’s okay to teach kids that their only true happiness would come from God, and that the only purpose of our lives was to worship and bring glory to him. And the worst thing of all is brainwashing kids into their circle of hatred. When I was in Second Grade, it was a tiny private Christian school with only ten kids in my grade. The other three girls only wanted to talk about My Little Pony, which I, going through my tomboy phase, despised. There were more boys than girls, and they talked about cool stuff like Skylanders, and we had just got Swap Force for our Xbox 360. So I asked everyone to call me Bill so I could hang out with the boys. The teachers absolutely despised this, and I didn’t understand why. I got so many talkings-to about how my name was Lexi and it would always be Lexi because God said so. I remember vividly when I wrote “Bill” on the name tag of my recorder box, and the music teacher gave me the stink eye. She said that “people couldn’t use fake names like that, it would be so confusing!” I insisted that Lexi was a nickname anyway, a shortening of Alexis,so what was the problem with being called Bill? I didn’t understand until years later why they were all so upset with me, and I was absolutely disgusted by them. All the times they told us that “We are perfectly and uniquely created by God!” and yet they didn’t allow anyone who didn’t fit their mold. That hatred didn’t let up when we moved to Minnesota and I went to a different tiny private Christian school. When I realized I wasn’t straight in Eight Grade, I was devastated. By then I had realized homophobia was stupid, but I had so much internalized stuff like “You’re just faking this for attention!” and “You’re just confused!” That was also the year the queerphobia got absolutely shoved down our throats. All of my friends said so many horrible things about LGBTQ+ people, and whenever I would try to say something in retaliation, they would all look at me, disgusted. There were so many days I hid in the bathroom and cried. I was legitimately contemplating death at twelve years old because the Christians around me made me so miserable. I got therapy, I got support online, and I managed to come out to my parents. They think I’m too young to know and don’t want me to tell extended family (reasonably, they’re jerks) but it went a lot better than I expected. Now I’m going to a different school, still small and private and Christian, but better. It’s three times the size of the super homophobic middle school, and there are supportive teachers, especially the liberal and super nice Spanish teacher. I have a new group now, and I’m starting to distance myself from the old one. They made me miserable so I’m leaving them. I hope everyone realizes that you don’t have to stay with awful people. You don’t have to have unconditional love just because you used to have a good time with them. I also joined theater, which is full of supportive and LGBTQ+ people, and our director is so nice to all of us. Things still aren’t perfect and they never will be, but they’re so much better. I hope things get better for everyone stuck in these situations.

STORY TIME: I had a cat named Hiddles. He was my baby. I was living in an apartment where my bedroom window opened up to a deck and it was so low neighbors could walk right up. I called it my “drive-thru window”. ANYWHO I started hearing this stray cat meowing like a maniac at that window and they wouldn’t stop until Hiddles came outside. I noticed how they acted with one another and it was clear they were a mating pair so I named the stray cat Luka. Over time Luka felt comfortable enough with me to come into my apartment. Luka was walking around one day and I saw two things dangling from his hind end that I never noticed before. LUKA was actually LUKE! My male cat had a boyfriend! It gets better. Fast forward a bit and there was this starving kitten under the stairs of our deck and she refused to come out where someone could reach her. I told my neighbor that if she could ever catch the kitten, I’d give her a home. Well, one day my neighbor got her and brought her to me. I named her Natasha but called her Tishy for short. I started giving her food, but since it had been so long since she’d had real meals she had horrible diarrhea and I had to clean her little butt which was so painful for her. One morning I woke up and saw Hiddles, Luke, and Tishy all snuggled up together. From that moment on, those two male cats raised Tishy. She stopped having tummy problems, started to put on weight, and was generally in great health because of their tender loving care. The moral of the story: Sometimes queer people’s pets are ACTUALLY queer, and, like some same-sex human couples, they adopt. ☺️☺️☺️🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈

I'm so glad to have been raised the way I was. Trans people of color talk a lot about how they'll never be totally "feminine" or "masculine" because they're not white and those things are associated with being white.
Like, I've never associated femininity or masculinity with skin color. I've never thought someone looked less like a man or woman because their skin wasn't pasty. When I see a gorgeous trans woman of color, I see a gorgeous woman first. When I see a handsome man of color, I see a handsome man first. (Well, I see an attractive person before I assume anything, but you get my point)

STORY TIME: I had a cat named Hiddles. He was my baby. I was living in an apartment where my bedroom window opened up to a deck and it was so low neighbors could walk right up. I called it my “drive-thru window”. ANYWHO I started hearing this stray cat meowing like a maniac at that window and they wouldn’t stop until Hiddles came outside. I noticed how they acted with one another and it was clear they were a mating pair so I named the stray cat Luka. Over time Luka felt comfortable enough with me to come into my apartment. Luka was walking around one day and I saw two things dangling from his hind end that I never noticed before. LUKA was actually LUKE! My male cat had a boyfriend! It gets better. Fast forward a bit and there was this starving kitten under the stairs of our deck and she refused to come out where someone could reach her. I told my neighbor that if she could ever catch the kitten, I’d give her a home. Well, one day my neighbor got her and brought her to me. I named her Natasha but called her Tishy for short. I started giving her food, but since it had been so long since she’d had real meals she had horrible diarrhea and I had to clean her little butt which was so painful for her. One morning I woke up and saw Hiddles, Luke, and Tishy all snuggled up together. From that moment on, those two male cats raised Tishy. She stopped having tummy problems, started to put on weight, and was generally in great health because of their tender loving care. The moral of the story: Sometimes queer people’s pets are ACTUALLY queer, and, like some same-sex human couples, they adopt. ☺️☺️☺️🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
