I just helped my mother snag a SER4 4700U to replace her very old system and it is plenty fast for her office work. If I was going to play with one, I might hold out for the 6000 series processors just for the huge bump in GPU capability.

Modular Compute reviews are always nice. They leave me torn between are these Phone competitor reviews, or useful PC replacement reviews. I tend to buy NUC type PCs for my Mom.. but it would be nice to have an option where a full size Optical or with a card slot were available. the ASrock DeskMeet is looking like what I might upgrade Mom too.. but am I just hankering for the olden days? Or Hording physical tangible servers.. instead of going the way of the compute stick, square you can hide behind a Vesa mount.

    • @GYTCommnts
      @GYTCommnts ปีที่แล้ว

If by "Optical" you are referring to internal CDs / DVDs / Blu-ray drives... You should check a drive enclosure. The difference between an external drive and a combo of internal + enclosure (that connects by USB to the mini PC) is that should be cheaper, the enclosure may be useful for various devices depending what type you want to connect (IDE, SATA...), and if the drive gets broken you can change it. Even the drive with the enclosure becomes "portable" and would work with USB on almost any modern Windows and Linux device (and not so modern too). I have one and love it. It saved me many times, and I can swap the drive with different internal ones I have.
Thinking better, nowadays it may not be cheaper the combo anymore. But I think it may be worth to invest in an enclosure depending the use case. Vantec is a brand that make this type of things with a good quality and price balance.

I was pretty interested in the last one you showed, and I looked into buying one, but I vaguely remember it was difficult to buy in Australia. At least this one can be bought off the rainforest website. I'm not a fan of that website though.
From memory there were some other limitations with the previous one which made it not quite right for what I wanted, so I ended up going with an Asus mini PC with a Ryzen APU. It was more expensive, but I've had no issues. I'm just using it as a server, so it's not like it has a particularly hard life.

I know that you talked about this in some videos, but would you make a new one about connecting internal drives (optical ones and hdds) using adapters and enclosures?
I was commenting this to some that were wondering about connecting optical drives or big HDDs to this type of mini PCs.
I have different enclosures that give me the possibility to use internal drives as external with USB support (SATA and even IDE).
This is very handy in different scenarios and may work in some old computers and new ones with USB support.
Vantec and Sabrent are brands that make this type of devices, and there are others too of course with different quality and prices.
Not many people take in consideration this option, that may be better that directly buying an external drive for many reasons.

This. This CPU is NOT the latest generation per Phil's comment in the video. It's two generations behind on the CPU (zen3+ and zen4 have replaced it), and one generation behind (really 4 years behind) on the graphics architecture. A 6600u would be a huge upgrade on the graphics side, to get performance closer to the Steam Deck.
I'd say the Steam Deck is still the much better deal, at a slightly higher price (the SER5 model tested here is now 345USD). RDNA2. Ordering is only a couple months behind for delivery. This thing's upgradability and connectivity looks nice though.

So that small tissue box can run Windows 11, but my HP from 2018 can't.

I wish you had taken out the motherboard and CPU, just to have a look. In any case, I guess they are using laptop components. It is so small.
AMD made the right choice many years ago when they fused with ATI.

Yea I'm a bit reluctant to take it apart like that, but yes, the CPU is a notebook APU and uses notebook RAM as well.

These computers just aren't worth it here where I live, €650,- buys me a parts to build something slightly better with a R5 5600G and either more storage or RAM. And the option to upgrade with a gpu somewhere in the future.

I cannot think of any situation when I would use this mini PC. As a desktop it is loud and not upgradeable, and it is not portable like a laptop. It combines the worst characteristics of the two.

Mini PC, All I care about most = Does it run "pure dos 7.1 & 9x" (or 3rd party flavors) & when not doing retro-duty.... how much Monico Crypto coin can it mine per day?
Its what no cloud game service can do > stuff other than retro/current game streaming (from word processing to crypto mining)
I'd rather EARN pennies a day, than PAY pennies a day .... any day? (I obviously an a former, and disheartened, "popular streaming" service customer.. FORMER!)

I'm thinking of one of these... just need to figure out which is best--- because I DO NOT do "gaming"-- that's a big waste of time and resourcs.. (for ME- not knocking it for those that like it)...
