Backpacking Thailand | Bangkok, Phuket, Ko Tao, Full Moon Party

  • This is the untold story of when I was in Thailand on South East Asia Trip in 2018. My time here was partly of a group tour organised by G Adventures. This video tells the story of Thailand.
Thailand started with an exploration of Bangkok, before heading onto the 30 day Indochina tour with G Adventures visiting: Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos. The tour crossed the Mekong River and in Chaing Mai we visited an elephant sanctuary. We had organised this outside the tour as they do not do anything with animals so we chose a small organisation who looked after a few elephants. It's always difficult to tell whether something is 'ethical' but we found the feeding and bathing experience to be, at the time, well cared for.
In Bangkok the tour departed, but it was really just the start of the adventure in Thailand. There was a big group formed to travel some more of the country, so we flew on to Phuket so chill after a long 30 days. We had also decided to re-group for the infamous Full Moon Party on Ko Pha Ngan in a few weeks time.
Parties were a focal point of Thai backpacking and on the party island of Phi Phi this was definitely the case. This island is beautiful, and Maya Bay was spectacular. This was before it was shut due to over tourism and you could see that it needed a break.
Heading onto Krabi and staying in a remote hostel in the mangroves, we headed to a secret beach not marked on a map, and climbed up to a temple to watch the sunset. We were even ambushed by monkeys on the way up!
Across to Ko Lanta on the eastern side of country to chill in a wooden hut on the beach, before some massive partying awaited. This started in Ko Tao, where we headed to Nangyuan Island and partied in the bars at the beach.
Ko Samui was a little calmer a popular holiday island with waterfalls, lush sands and temples.
The main event was on Ko Pha Ngan, it was a mixed experience with a lot of hype around the Full Moon Party, which was overall fun but a little disappointing. We stayed in the jungle in a massive apartment built into the hillside, some people got sick, we got stuck at a jungle party due to an alcohol ban and everyone got lost at the Full Moon Party itself. I think next time, for the full experience we would need to immerse ourselves into the hostels in the beach towns.
Arriving back to Phuket, this time in the old town myself and Gemma were on our own, the group had gone their separate ways and although we would see a few of them randomly again there was no major plans. The flights were always booked out of Singapore, and Malaysia was next as I planned to visit Borneo, but had not actually planned anything, to another country and the most amazing nature in the whole world!
There was no 'Travel Bubble' at the time, and my journey was documented on my I-Phone 8+ and a Go-Pro Hero 5. I knew from my South America solo trip that I wanted to capture travel in more detail, so took time to capture more footage, and make sure it was saved regularly, but I had no idea about what filming and making a video was really about. The start of this channel showcased the original highlight videos from S.E Asia, but there was a story that needed to be told! Those videos acted as a prequal to starting travel vlogs in the return to South America in 2019.
This video and these memories are the most personal project to date, and the trickiest story to tell. I hope you enjoy.
