Panasonic, the global video leaders. Period.
The S5II has great ergos. I like how you can hold the buttons down to assign functions without having to dive in the menu. I wish Nikon would adopt that. I forgot to mention that when I had the S5II it always took too long for it to start up.
Panasonic has incredible video quality, way better than its price suggests. I owned an A7siii and was shocked how much better the footage (24,30 pfs) looked on my brother's Panasonic S1. I would even dare to say that at 4k 30 the footage is better than any mirrorless.
That's probably because it is. I've used the A7S3 for about 2 years and preferred the image of the S5 most of the time. I even think it gives the Fx6 a run for it's money when it comes to highlight rolloff.
I also came from Sony several years ago. Now with the S5II X I've got my 5th Lumix camera. And the new autofocus is making my work sometimes much easier.
Just replaced my XH2s with the S5II, had more appealing features than the XH2s, being a 70/30 Video first shooter this is a much better camera for me. Also!, The colors at 9:30 is amazing what was the process for that?, any tweaks other than the conversion? It also looks like a subtle mist filter was used did you use a 1/8th?
Hoping the day everyone uses stacked sensors comes soon.
That's what will fix rolling shutter and preview blackout.
Panny ergos and color science are really nice and they're the only one that has good anamorphic support...
Finally....finally a proper review of the camera from a photographer's POV. Most of the reviews have been praising the camera from a video perspective (which is fair enough), and when you try to find out any information from photographer's using the camera a lot of it is the defensive *the camera is perfect* rhetoric. Clearly this is a step up from the S5 in terms of the PDAF, but the focus seems to be only average compared to its contamporaries. Also, surprisingly it seems like the processor might be limiting factor here; sluggish start up times, PDAF limitations (at certain frame rates and actually at high ISO too). I think I'll hold onto my S5 for now but it is a good camera.
I don't know about the S5II but I have the S1R and I totally agree that it handles much better than my Z7II. I look forward to seeing how Panasonic will upgrade this body moving forward through firmware and what new bodies will be released with new features.
I sold the a7IV for the S5II, and I can say certainly the LUMIX is such a better experience, and definitely better in most areas.
So far the only camera I've ever returned. (Thanks B&H for making that easy). No real specific complaint...just wasn't for me. I'm sure I'd have enjoyed it more if I really seriously did video. I enjoyed the shutter sounds. Very therapeutic mechanical shutter was a true positive.
Gotta agree about the mech-shutter sound, it’s absolutely beautiful, though i haven’t returned mine, I absolutely love it.
Photography is mainly done, so is the s5m2 good? I'm a bit worried because it's saved as 12-bit raw during continuous shooting.
The Panasonic’s are video leaning dslm’s. The IS is second to none, and is for video. If you look in the manual it will detail when sending a signal over HDMI will disable the monitor on the back. Otherwise it would be driving up to three separate video signals.
What's a dslm ?
Hi Matt, thanks for the review.
I have a question about the stills burst shooting modes on the S5ii that I haven't been able to find a clear answer on. In the camera's user manual, it states that "The color depth of RAW images recorded with this camera is 14 bits. This is limited to 12 bits during burst recording, however." (Page 121)
I was wondering if this applies to all burst shooting modes or only some of them? And if it does only do burst shooting in 12 bit, is there a noticeable loss in malleability in post? Thanks again!
The 12 but only applies to E-shutter burst shooting (which for the S5ii is the 30fps superHigh burst mode). Shooting with Mech-Shutter at 7 or 9 fps (depending on AFS or AFV) will result in full 14 bit raw files.
Bought this to replace my good old Nikon d610 + serve my growing needs for video. Could not be happier. Nice to shoot video on a camera that is designed for that. For photography it’s good enough, but not my favourite option. The best thing with this system is that you get very good 1.8 primes for reasonable amount f money, and the fact that they all share same filter size and weight is really nice. Shutter angle + exposure tools for video are really handy.
Matt, it's well known the Sigma lenses have worse AF on the S5ii than the native Lumix. Also the dual I.S gives up to 7.5 stops in my Lumix S 24-105 f4 and around 6 stops in my Lumix S 70-300 f4.5-f5.6.
Depending on focal length those long shutter speeds are possible. I'm getting 1/4 sec with old Pentax 24/28 lenses.
I want a lens to buy with S5 mark ii.I want to record mainly video of my self and sometimes casual photoshoot. Can you suggest me a lens?
Interesting.. i have a Panasonic G9 MkII, so a micro four thirds camera, but it has the same strengths and weaknesses. Same so so auto focus, screen black out but great for video. But coming from a Nikon D810 i was a bit shocked about those photo weaknesses, as i thought mirrorless and much newer tech would be a step forward.
Nice review Matt. I kept waiting to hear the phrase "For half the price of a Nikon Z8, it's pretty good."
Question: how does it comapre to a hypothetical Z6 III (Z6 with Expeed 7)?
Sorry I don’t follow rumors, and I don’t compare real to hypothetical cameras… pointless imo
@@mattgranger Agreed on the rumours, but I think we can all agree that both the Z6 and Z7 will be refreshed with the faster processor.
It's not particularly valuable information for watchers who already have some investment in a mount, bur for me and like 3 others who don't have said investment, that would be very valuable information.
Firmware 2.0 is now out. Did it improve the autofocus
No idea. We filmed this a month ago and already returned the loaner camera.
I love this camera :) And I've the same lens.. 35mm on the way. You can achieve pro stuff with it, for sure!
Ahaha coming from you you are a pro Nikon surprise me. I'm about to buy the X version of the S5 plus for video. I already own the S1, but for photos the R version is better, but I complain about the lack of offer from the Lumix optics catalog.
Why does that surprise you? I am honest about al brands
@@AIP404 Although, at the moment, I have 2 full-frame lumix lenses 24-105 and 70-200 f/2.8 - I'm taking the prime series f/1.8 18, 35, 50 and 85 mm. - I miss the extreme telephoto lenses like 400 or 600 mm . or type mft 100-400 Leica (too bad it can't be coupled to a tele-converter) that I use on GH5.

....ok
@@mattgranger lol
I decided to keep my S5 and not upgrade. I don't shoot video btw, and the AF works for me even though I shoot in low light conditions a lot.
I guess it's more oriented towards videographers. The S1 II is going to be mind blowing I guess.
While the S1 II could be mind blowing, I wonder if Panasonic will repeat the S1R II / S1H II split?
yes it is!
How come you never put a test in to the Pentax k3 mark lll? It’s not full frame and the video is not great, but image quality and features for the photography side has quite high marks. Open your horizons up a bit Matt, and give this camera an lenses a review…..
Because of the small Potential audience
I have picked up an S5IIx and for the price I think it will serve my hybrid video needs just fine, but if I’m shooting stills then the Z9 is coming out of its bag. There’s no way I’m putting up with so much buffer lag. The menu approach is clunky in many spots and at times the number of options becomes an avalanche of choices such as when you’re picking out a resolution and frame rate. I also feel like a gatekeeper with the S5IIx. If you want to record to and SSD (not an option on the 5II) then you have to explicitly set the SSD mode, and then when you’re done you have to turn it off. On the much older BMPCCs, the firmware adjusts on the fly. If there’s an SSD present, then you have the option of selecting it, if you unplug the SSD then the camera automatically switches to on SD card. The S5IIx doesn’t even know the SD slots exist until shut off USB-C recording. Very clunky. And I would much rather have the camera converting time code on the fly rather than having to do this in post, but I can live with it. Davinci Resolve makes the process relatively painless, though onset playback has to be without sound. Nevertheless, the video feature set for the size and the money is excellent, and open gate recording (one of the primary reasons I made the purchase) should save me a lot of effort in studio rather than having to re-rig, re-frame, and re-record material for vertical. Overall I think it’s a win.
Same, I would rather have a $5.5k camera than a $1.9k camera. Who would have guessed a $5.5k camera is better than a $1.9k camera. Not me.
@@1PercentMomFker Each has strengths. I much prefer recording video on the S5II (with basics like a shutter angle option, complete fps support, waveform, open gate recording, etc. all missing from Nikon) than kludge my way through with the Z8 or Z9 at substantially more money. If Nikon supported these things then I would have picked a Z8 to be my hybrid. But unfortunately I don’t think Nikon will get there any time soon.
You can filter out the codecs so you don’t have to scroll through all the options.
Wow Rolex!
The AF on the singing is a good include - a bit like my GH5 would do... no, actually worse (plus I'd use MF anyway...)
