    Back in the 1950s,as a child, I remember watching suckers run up a small creek behind my great aunt’s house, they were coming out of lake Willoughby, some were pretty good sized fish, I’ve caught suckers out of Willoughby on worms, that would go 5 to 6 pounds.

      I believe it! I couldn’t believe how strong these suckers were, the first one in the video had to have been in that weight range as well. Was worried about my 5wt fly rod snapping in half a few times!

      Would you be willing to share the name of the brook?

      @@VermontMasterAnglers I don’t know the name of the brook, but it is just north of the big brook beside the store in Westmore, we used to call it the store brook, it empties into Willoughby just north of Wheeler’s cabins. That small brook empties into the store brook. I hope that helps, I haven’t been up there since 1996, I left Vermont in 1966, and married a woman here in Evansville, Indiana, where I still live. I was born and raised in Windsor, Vermont.

      @@dalerash6285 Thanks! Looks like it's called "Mill Brook"

      @@VermontMasterAnglers It was a feeder creek that empties into Mill creek. Both my parents were born in Westmore, and are buried in the cemetery by the North beach of Willoughby, Willoughby was where we vacationed, and we hunted snowshoes hares in the Fall and Winter, fished in the Spring and Summer, both Willoughby and area streams, my favorite place on planet earth !

    Cool video! At 9:38 you can see a pair of pretty big suckers swimming upstream

      Thanks man! I didn’t even notice that until now haha. They’re so cool to watch in really shallow water while they’re spawning. Certainly no shortage of fish on this day!!

    Nice!!! I need to find more places to target them! They're running Leffort Brook right now...

      Thanks man! It would be pretty cool to chase suckers all over the state honestly haha. Such a cool animal!

      check maps of lakes around VT and anytime you see a "sucker brook," most likely that's where they will be in spring

    Can’t seem to get em no matter what fly I use, u letting it drift by them or are you setting it down on the bottom?

    • @WoodsNorth
      @WoodsNorth  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This was during the spawn so I was able to see every fish I was casting at. I had luck with pheasant tails and prince nymphs, but honestly I think any nymph will work if it’s drifted right in front of their face. Redfish anglers call it “painting a mustache on ‘em.” These fish were tight to the bottom but the creek I was in was maybe only three or four feet deep at the most. My advice would be to get the fly down and let it drift right in front of their faces. Hope you get into some fish man! 🎣

      It's funny, everyone I've talked to either says that or that they taste terrible haha.. How do you like to cook them? I've been thinking I want to go back to this spot next year and do a catch and cook for suckers!

    • @koof1776

      @WoodsNorth I pan fry in avocado oil and then add a tablespoon of butter during the last minute for flavor.

      Yes I do in fact believe Looney Tunes was referencing the formidable white sucker in their cartoons

      That’s awesome man! They should be hitting this creek any day now. Usually happens just after ice out which is way earlier than last year
