    When buying a lens, there are just so many factors. When I was looking at whether to get the f/2.8 or f/4, the two primary factors were the subject matter I intended to shoot, which is studio portraits, where f/6.3 is generally as fast as I am going to go. More important, was the weight, and the effect it has on my back. The Panasonic f/2.8 seems to be by far the heaviest f/2.8 on the market currently and the whilst the Panasonic f/4 is heavy for an f/4, it still weighs in at of half a kilogram less, which is a big thing.

    Thanks for the review. The focus breathing is essentially nonexistent with this lens. Impressive. The F4 would save some bucks, but for interior events F4 can be limiting. Dang...gotta start saving up for this one.

    I think you managed a really good real life review of this lens, it’s a big investment and in the right hand an impressive price of glass, you’ve shown that here. Thanks.

    You are so revealing , liberating unprofessional in your test. I really like it ! On the
    other hand, it could be exatly as you do it, thats why it's so great at the same time. What you show us the most is the wounderful, kind of airy, soft and at the same time crispy look. Like a good wine. To bad its a little to expensive. Think its caused by the Leitz management I can "feel them" in the bakground. They will not let go a good lens "les expenisive" even if they could, so there for they don't sell to many of them instead. It's called prestige. To bad, I would like this instead of a 4.0. and as you with a tele converter. For now caused of the pricing, I dont whant to buy any of them. Still using Canon F lens with Sigma converter to the S5.s.

      If you have light it really is underrated.
      This is also before we get the update and it was at 24fps at full frame.
      Super 35 mode
      And faster frame rates actually net you better autofocus results.

    Sorry, but this test does not encourage me to buy this lens. Other videos on the net really epoch show that this is phenomenal glass. The lens has amazing bokeh. Why is this glass so good? A lot of people don't know but the certificated by face designation means that panasonic buys the patent/lens design from Leica and then creates the whole housing and autofocus system. Almost all pro lenses have faster AF than the SL series. For example, I have a 50 1.4 Pro and it is the best prime in terms of sharpness. Maybe other companies have faster lenses, but here in such a 50 1.4 sharpness and plasticity of the glass does the job. Compared to such a 50 1.4 SL Sumillux, the differences appear in the spinning bokeh and micro-contrast in the background. The AF is slower though.

      I agree. This lens, along with the 24-70mm and the 50mm S Pro are fantastic, insane micro contrast and excellent sharpness if you find a good copy.

    Awesome review of a great lens.
    Another argument for justifying the high price: on my S1H I can switch from FF to S35, right away adding 1.5 focal length, making this lens going up to 300mm effectively.
    If you then add the 2x adapter you are at 600mm - Wow! Hope my honey gets the math and approves this huge spend -:)

    • @fatherofbirds
      @fatherofbirds  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thinking in a way that the crop factor helps you save a lot of money and stops from switching so many lenses.

  • @AlexBellini3

    How does the focus clutch help pull focus? Do you memorize real quick what number each desired area of focus you want has to be? Or is it something you feel?

    • @fatherofbirds
      @fatherofbirds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The focus moves accurately through the given measurments when it's pulled back. You can get from the minimum to maximum focus differences much faster. If it's not pulled back you have to spin the focus ring a few times depending on the speed you pull it at.

    Thank you!! Exactly what I was looking for. Looking to try this lens for a fashion show and a drift event coming up. The price point is high but willing to sacrifice it. I like to focus depth switch, main thing that gravitates my attention towards the 2.8 vs the F4. I got used to pulling focus a lot if my current lenses, so I believe the focus clutch will be very nice to have. Also question, is the focus clutch affected by the in camera setting for linear and non linear focus setting?

      I’m gonna try my best. I have a 85mm sigma Art 85 1.4 and I have been heavily considering going all sigma for my prime lenses (mostly because of impatience)
      I’ve been dying for a 35mm prime but I’ll try and wait for Lumix to make them.

      @@fatherofbirds I hear ya, even though im way later to this system, its still gonna be well into next year before they finish that line up. Cant even get the 85 yet. Word is though, the 85 has the best autofocus results of any of the native glass, so hopefully that will be the case for the whole line up and we can dispense with the only current weakness of the system when needed. Oh yeah, also do you use any external gear for video? Monitors, gimbals etc. Wouldnt mind your thought on these as im looking right now. All the best.

    • @fatherofbirds
      @fatherofbirds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@leonardodosvinci4130
      That’s refreshing to hear about the 85mm 1.8. I will admit I like the size of those lenses and the idea of using a gimbal on a 85 prime with such easy is very interesting.
      So currently I’m using the Ronan S as my main gimbal. Works just fine for me now.
      I probably would recommend to anyone to try and just save up for a Atmos Ninja V simply because it will also super charge your camera to shoot prores raw as well as double as a Greta day light monitor.
      Cheaper options I use are the feel world 7 inch and 5 inch monitors which are both under $200 dollars and are great indoor but near useless outside. They do have a 7inch monitor rated for daylight that just released for under $300 that I haven’t tried but look promising.
      I’ll make a Vidoe on the two I have in a week or so. My channel just hit 1000 subs so I’ve got some fire to make some new videos :)

      @@fatherofbirds Great to hear man! Im so torn on the Ninja though. The V2 update brings the S5 soooo close. You got waveform, shutter angles, timecode etc etc, its all there really. Damn tempting for that 6K raw and external ssd though. Cheers bro, cant wait for the new content!

    Nice review! Do you happen to notice stepping when you use the focus clutch shooting in 60p when conforming to 24p in post? I've noticed that when shooting with my f4 70-200mm and 24-105mm f4 and shooting for slow motion, when I rack focus, its not smooth at all and seems to step horribly even with Linear focus enabled and i've gone through all of the focusing degrees.

    • @fatherofbirds

      I think if you don’t need continuous autofocus those are all really solid option. I personally like the way sigmas work and look with Panasonic colors more than Tamron so my vote would be the sigma or the Lumix 70-200 F4

      The camera remembers your focus distance on the clutch mode when you switch back to it from other modes. This means you can do focus pulls super easily between normal and clutch focus.
      You also feel the soft stops of the clutch system quite clearly with your fingers when you reach each end.
