What has kept me from Nihilism is that I've always had a fascination with history, and so I've studied history from the stone age to the modern day. And one pattern that always repeats throughout human history is that awful things keep happening, and history is riddled with wars, plagues, environmental disasters, economic and societal collapses, all kinds of awful, disastrous things. About 70 000 years ago there was even an environmental disaster so bad, that the number of human beings on earth according to some estimates may have been as low as one thousand. And yet, here we are today, with a population of 8+ billion. Every dark time in history was always followed by new innovations, new ideas, and eventually a time of growth and prosperity. That's not to say that individuals always have a happy ending, but humanity as a whole is actually very good at adapting, reorganising, and rebuilding. So, when things get dark like they are now, it's good to remember that while things may still get worse, they will eventually get better again somewhere down the line, and it's not worthless to try and fight for better times, because people have always done that and eventually succeeded.

Is it no deeper than that? Rick is tortured. He’s no true nihilist. He’s haunted by the loss of his loved ones.

Nietzsche has become a definer of much of nihilism in modern times. Nietzsche also described the "Ubermensch", the man who looks into the meaningless in life and realizes its a canvas for him to impart his own meaning onto - that he is ultimately much more in control of his own destiny in a meaningless world. He celebrates it and revels in it.
Of course, Camus came along later and defined Absurdism, defined by the "Absurd Man". While the exact meaning is debated still, we know that the Absurd Man understands that the world is irrational and meaningless, and that the world's meaninglessness and irrationality creates a direct conflict with man's deep want to have meaning and purpose. Despite that, Camus' Absurd Man chooses to continue his life, to engage in the meaningless cycles which he carries out every day, in enjoyment. "one must imagine Sisyphus happy". The Absurd Man does not try to create a new meaning to life, but enjoys life nonetheless, which is where he and the Ubermensch differ.

As dumb as it sounds it really helps to remain blissfully ignorant on issues you have no influence over. It makes it a lot easier to focus on manageable things. More than anything the media is a noise machine. Trying to stay decently informed on absolutely everything is an exercise in futility. An endlessly frustrating and depressing exercise.

Nihilism is both intellectual and spiritual laziness. To those who say it gives them meaning, define that meaning other than "whatever I want it to be, man." Do you live an upright life of joy, family, love, community, and personal improvement? I sort of doubt it as your philosophy is: "I define my life, dude. So call of duty and lonely masturbation in a small apartment is my new God."

What you describe as nihilism, seems to me more as a journey of introspection. I don't see it as a bad thing, but it can't be done forever, and it's ultimately important to reconnect with family and start trying to mesh with people you might even disagree with again. The impression I got from this video is that you still hold a lot of hostility, and that it's holding you back from truly understanding people.

A lot of people who think they are the best fall into the trap of moral nihilism. I've experienced it over and over again, mostly with the less intelligent crowd I have been around. In the scope of a company with a boss who is also a moral nihilist/relativist, that makes for a dangerous combination - which I have also experienced first hand, having to eventually sue that employer. You should have seen the expression on the face of the judge, she had never heard a case so clear cut, because almost nobody had ever taken them to court before in 30+ years of operation. I was the first that could explain exactly what the problems were and where it conflicted exactly with the law. And there was a LOT of problems. She was in shock. Whenever you shine a light on cockroaches, expect them to scatter. That's all you can do with the nihilists, hold them to account - and watch them crawl away sad that they got caught. In an industry with over 45000 workers who had never stood up for themselves, I still don't hold out any hope that the case will help them in any way. There are just far too many problems nobody wants to do anything about and nobody involved is even intelligent enough to do anything about.

There is the concept of Nihilism and then there is apathy. Understanding the Nihilist perspective is important-it cannot be ignored because it is perfectly accurate. That being said...if you think about it...if you are truly Nihilist then you really don't have to adhere to any cultural protocols...not even Nihilistic ones lol.
This is not a bad thing, its actually quite beautiful. It means your life is a blank canvas and you may paint your life with whatever colours you wish. It means there is no one coming to save you; but it also means no one is going to send you to hell for being gay, or Muslim or both lol. This thought does not scare me or depress me-it invigorates me-it motivates me. It reminds me that my life is short and the only things of value I will ever see, are the things that are right in front of me. So I tell the people I love that I love them and I work hard for my community. Why would I do this when nothing matters? Simple: I want to-it brings me joy and if thats the life I want to pursue, Nihilism's opinion on my choice:
    "Meh" LOL.

Nihilism isnt about doom and gloom. Its about out growing the world and realizing I no longer have anything to hang onto, ive transcended it all, from now on its all up to me to define what living is for me. This can be a very uncomfortable position for a lot of people so instead of moving forward through nihilism they retreat back into their safe group or start jumping from one group to another, regress back into conforming rather than becoming an individual. For others they break free and starting working on themselves and develop into the individual they always should have been, reaping the benefits of creating and influencing themselves and the world in new positive ways.

Nihilism only affects you if you care to much about the world or what is going on around you. The fact off the matter is that ignorance is bliss , because almost everything going around the world are things you have no influence in or can't do anything about so it's useless to care at all. Just keep your bubble safe and care for those around you as anything else should just be ignored.

This is planet earth - everyone isn't a walking Plato. Often the best the common man can do, is take politics as philosophy. The day of the Ancient Greek had far less intrusion, oversight, and interconnectedness than the brutal hyperconnected world we live in...and the messages of the day, mostly political, are like oxygen. We can't get away from them unless you utterly disengage...and while maybe YOU can pull that off, or YOU are smart and strong enough to keep everything in its proper context...for the common man, this is hard. And in 2024, near impossible.
I am not disagreeing with you - but this guy is an imperfect dude, trying to pull back from the brink. Its not a prescription, its his experience, and it appears to be working for him - and as it turns out, for us (as community members). I am glad he's trying.

First time coming across your channel. I see that you really have a big problem with Trump. Which is understandable, and I get where people are coming from in that regard. But I think the dilemma you find yourself in is something like this: Are you fighting for what is good? Or for what is evil? And perhaps the more important question: how do you know? How do any of us know?
To me, the most important questions in politics are at their base questions of what is good and what is evil. And how do we know? I think if you're able to answer that, you'll be on a better track. Thankfully in our system, Presidents can only serve for 8 years max. So, I'm sure Trump isn't really your actual problem. But have you ever considered that maybe Trump is a little more on the "good" side than you might think? Even though he's by no means a super "moral" guy. But anyways, I'll leave at that. I'm glad to see you've started to come out of your philosophical nihilism, which is good! I wish you luck, and as with myself, I hope you find the truth!

I once met a guy who reasoned that Trump is better than Biden for geopolitics because he is less interested in embodying an imperialistic "American global police" worldview.
He also told me he only uses reddit for knowledge and considers the academic sources he is forced to study biased leftist stuff that brainwashed his university.
I'm on good terms with him but listening to him really shattered my faith in human integrity. Crossing the isle has only made me more nihilistic.

there isnt any reason to say the dual though, that nothing matters therefore its all bad. The lack of justifiability is the main reason people dislike nihilism. All we have left is our internal desires, which would work if they couldnt be shaken to bits by the world in the form of mental illnesses or depression. If your problem was your internal desires being denied by a moral framework, then nihilism is great. If your internal desires are self destructive in any form, nihilism doesnt care.
