This is a great tutorial! You take time to show people how to manage screws which not many videos do. Beginner modders don't always think of that and lose screws often.
Thanks for the nice comment, I’m glad you liked the video!
@@TheModSmith It was all fine and dandy until you started cutting and drifted into redneck repair territory with all that tape. 😉
Finally something comprehensive! I'll give it a try tomorrow
Good luck!
@@TheModSmith itll work with any official firmware? I'm on 15.0.1
@@QTheMostThe latest firmware is 18.0.0 and is supported, so you can go ahead and update.
@@TheModSmith awesome thanks
@@TheModSmith god damn i didnt realize how small the caps were.. one came off right away...
Just modded my first Switch! This tutorial helped a lot, thanks a bunch!
Were the steps still up to date?
@@Cheesepizza222yea it same for v2
Professor Snape is teaching me how to mod my nintendo switch. how cool is that
😂😂😂😂
For the metal shield cutting bit, what you can do is cut a longer strip of tape and tape it to the mod chip so it goes down and is visible, then just cut that same size and then remove the tape or shorten it, flip it, do whatever you want with it. Obviously you'll have to be careful when removing since the chip is free to move around and you don't wanna break a connection or something but I think it'll make it look better the closer the cut is to the size of the chip's plate
I was able to install the chip this friday :)
Congratulations!
@@TheModSmith Thank you.
You can use Kapton tape to stabilize the flex cable as you solder it
Or solder the ground pads if you don't have any
Cool stuff.
Have you tried a chisel tip? Someone recommended it to me some time ago, and after giving it a try on a few soldering I just could go back. It makes it easier to do good soldering points, at least for me, is the good in general.
Anyway, I'm now considering cracking open my switch.
Took a shot every time he said like
awesome video
@TheModSmith do you know where to get an original fan for the Switch V1? I bought one from Aliexpress and this was permanently on full speed. My fan makes some noises ...
Great tutoriel...Thanks a lot dud
You're welcome!
Cutting the shield over an motherboard seems very smart !
What’s your issue with that?
@@eyehear10 small pieces of the metal you cut can fall inside. Its very easy to put the swotch on the side and cut the shield
easy fix: dont cut the metal over the motherboard?
@@TechFlexwery Nice video by the way
ive been wanting to mod my nintendo switch so badly, as soon as i find some way to get this chip in my system i absolutely will
Way too much Flux and way too much solder you maniac
I have everything to do this myself except for the electrical tape.. great install btw and thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Do you have a link to the item you bought, i searched on aliexpress, but none of the sellers have any reviews and I dont trust it
Seems extremely doable. On the other hand, while seeing the tutorial, at the timestamp 27:34 it felt a bit worrying that the cable coming behind the shield would be pinched. It's a matter of perspective, or perhaps should it be recommendable to trimming the shield a bit more?
I've also noticed this, and while it hasn't caused any problems on my console, it feels a bit off. The issue arises with the heatsink because cutting the metal shield any further would disrupt where the heatsink contacts the shield.
@@TheModSmith perhaps bending that part up and then adding something soft as padding. Nonetheless, if it doesn't puncture the ribbon cable, that shouldn't be an issue, init?
What microscope do you use? 🤔
Thank you. I just modded mine. But now what to do, which guide to use for CFW etc?
Perfect install, brother! By the way, SP2 can be bridged to the right because the bridged point and the SP2 point are both ground. But, other than that, this was way better than the last video. Now, do an OLED or a Lite, please!
phew! Good to know, I accidentally shorted it.
It works anyway! Just to be clear, we are talking about the right-most soldering joint.
@@ivanv754 Yup, that one can also be a pain to correct if the flex cables are big enough.
Hey bro!!! donde veo atmos en 8.001 para la SD??? alguna recomendación???
Hi, what is the temp. that you use for soldering?
This looks amazing! I'm new to soldering and I'm practicing on some SMD practice kits that are really smal like those points. I was afraid to mess it up, however seeing that if bridges happen you can fix it fairly quickly makes me more secure.
I have a few questions if you don't mind answering
- Do you do anything special to fix a bridge? Just add more flux and reflow and poke it a bit with the tip and it kinds of relocates itself? I will try to purposely bridge something on my practice board just to see how I do.
- Can you use desoldering wick to desolder if you want to start again? I'm using it on my practice boards.
- What is the difference between brown-colored flux and clear flux? I have both, but to me they do the same, both are no-clean, and claim to have same properties and uses.
- I'm practicing on 0603 metric/0201 imperial, are those on the CPU a lot smaller?
Thank you very much! Will update when I feel confident enough and do it on my own v2.
If you have a bridge, cleaning the tip so it can take solder away and is all that is needed, this can be repeated until happy. Desoldering wick is another way to remove solder and is perfectly acceptable. Brown coloured flux has 'Rosin' in it which tends to give it that colour, not all flux has Rosin in it. Best flux imo is the amtech stuff. There is no 'no-clean' flux, always clean flux away with alcohol without fail. For the small connections on the cpu, magnification will help big time - this can be done by digital microscope or a cheap set of magnification headsets which are on ebay and will help massively. The only advice I can give is to not rush the procedure, take your time and try to do it as neatly as you can and you will be golden. Good luck.
what scope do you use?
@20:15 IF YOU'RE TROUBLESHOOTING AND WONDERING WHY ITS BOOTING TO THE NINTENDO SCREEN INSTEAD OF THE MODCHIP:
please also be aware that aside from the potential mod chip not being pre-flashed (which i believe is rare), it can also be that the switch isn't detecting the modchip (make sure theres enough space and not too much pressure where the mod chip is installed to prevent the connections from acting up (the pressure and screw and partial reassembly can also cause this (though in this videos case, it didn't). I was wondering why mine kept booting to nintendo instead of the modchip whenever i'd power it on. And that was why. Make sure the connections are solid as well!
How you know when they’re solid?
@@languidcreature2345 Well check with a multimeter on continuity mode first after the chip install. Check all newly soldered points. Once you'll be ok in terms of the connection. But again if there's too much pressure or not enough room for the modchip you may have to carefully clip the apu bracket to let the ribbon cable have space. And the mod chip you will have to cut the metal back shield as he shows here. maybe dont tighten the screws as tight if you have problems. i did!
What size of iron tip you are using?
After I solder the v2 and bridge them and go to turn on my switch.. the screen is just blank/black.. did I mess up my switch ?
Can you play online after modding or will Nintendo ban the console? Thank you for the excellent video!
Nintendo generally bans consoles for 3 things:
1. Installing software *to the home menu* from anywhere aside from the eShop. (Note: "software" includes installable homebrew, game updates, etc. Home menu themes aren't software)
2. Online play offenses (cheating, exefs modding, or getting reported)
3. Screwing with their online services (sending bad error reports, ripping your console's certificate and using it for nefarious purposes, blanking prodinfo and then going back online, etc.)
Of course, it's fully within Nintendo's discretion to ban for other reasons, but this covers the overwhelming majority of cases.
If you want to play emulators, mod single-player games, use cosmetic mods in some online games (check with their community) or overclock the Switch, you should be fine.
The discord link expired
Very good video, just what Ive been looking for. 2 questions, 1. do you need a microscope for the soldering? 2 what temp on the solder iron did you use?
I highly recommend using a microscope for this installation, especially due to the small size of the capacitors. I personally use 420 degrees Celsius on my iron, although some suggest temperatures closer to 360.
@@TheModSmith Thank you for your reply. I just got the mod chip this week. Wish me luck lol
I managed with a headband magnifying glass but it involved a lot of eye strain lol.
Don't use too hot... The capacitor will come off
All I've got is a magnifying glass that's on my helping hands. Can't afford a microscope just for this.
Link to purchase?
So the lesson is: Make sure your chip is programmed before installing it. That said, this is the easiest one to install because of the clips. Superior to the switch lite, that's a bit more difficult and the screen is smaller.
I opened it and the screen went blue.
You might have f* it man. Make sure GPU is alive
Maybe u need firmware to be flashed
👍👍👍
Is there a way to fix CMD not connecting in my Modchip?
Please also if doing anything inside the console disconnect the battery. You dont want any shorts to happen or you could potentially turn your switch into a brick!
Just to add some clarity some v1 switches came patched. Easiest way to find out if you have v1 or v2 is to look on back of console just above the usb port. The model number printed there determines if you have a v1 or v2
V1 = hac-001 whereas v2 = hac-001(-01)
Despite my comment, thank you for the comprehensive overview, plan to install mine tonight. Flashed the modchip already in preparation for the bigger job tonight 😬🤞
Ah yes, thanks for making me aware of this! Good luck with your install, I hope it goes well.
@@TheModSmith me too, hit a snag where one tri wing got stripped, had to drill it out 😱 but it went well
For this modchip, patched or not, it works on either. Easiest way to find out imo is checking the serial number online, it is well documented. For reference some V1's that are patched still have the original model number, so it is not foolproof to go by model number.
I was software updating my switch quite a bit but it's hac-001 so idk if it's patched or not lol
Does this work for any firmware? I have ofw v2 and softmod v1.
Also, do i need to install the atmosphere/hekate softmod after installing the mod chip into v2, or it already comes within the firmware from modchip it and just need to update it?
Thanks
1.yes
2.yea u need to setup files on sd card.
so 1Does this type of mod work with any switch (I checked the site and mine is patched), also how do I know whether to use the V1 or V2 cable? What if the chip I buy on AliExpress is always the same or do I need a specific one for some model?
All HAC-001 units are V1/Erista. Anything else, like *HAC-001(-01),* HDH-001, etc. are V2/Mariko.
Does this work on oled?
Trying to figure it out:
A switch oled with a Picofly rp2040 ... running a-ok on emulated size hekate and normal side.
Should you avoid 100% updating the switch firmware itself, or is it OK, or what special methods are needed?
I'm wanting to play my physical game cartridges online while booted into stock/semi stock mode , but it keeps asking for the software/firmware of switch to be updated first....
Thanks!
As long as you keep Atmosphere and Hekate up-to-date, it's fine to update the Switch. The modchip interrupts the boot process before any updatable code gets run.

Maybe it would've been a better idea to slide the module on the fan opening of the shield and mark to cut only were the flat flex is? That way, the heatshield will hold the module in place and you don't have to add extra tape.
how do u flash the uf2 file? im a newbie for switch but not androids and iphones when jailbreaking and rooting
In reality, it makes you cringe but is completely fine, that cable usually doesn’t sustain damage from that.
Hi, how are you? I wanted to do it too but I have a different modchip. Change something?
It seems pre-tinning was not so effective or made it easier to solder, would you skip that step in retrospect?
It's always worth doing when you're soldering something, whether it ends up helping a noticeable amount or not. The soldering would have probably been messier and consumed more time if he hadn't.
is it a new picofly rp2040 ?
switch seems to not power on after i connect the enand to the chip, but will power on when the enand is attached to the board in its proper place?
silly me, i did not put the mod chip into the connector where the enand originally was
Qué buen video, tengo una switch lite y quiero instalar el modchip, podrías hacer un video en una o es igual a esta. Saludos desde Colombia.
Thank you! The Switch Lite modchips are a different installation and have different flex cables to the regular Switch consoles, I may do a Lite modchip video soon.
Next time, use double sided tape to secure that loose chip
It would be very helpful, more control, and more accurate if you have a fine tip for the solder iron.
I solder 0803 and 0602 with a normal tip without issues.
Size doesn’t matter for the tip, it does for your solder you want to have thin as possible solder. Or just use some paste.
are there any disadvantages to not putting the shield back on, planning to put a transparent back on it
The Shield helps with Heat distribution. Without it, your Switch might get damage from Heat in the long run!
I have a switch on 17.0.1 . Should i update it and then mod or just mod it on this fw? Also is the latest sthetix pack backwards compatible with any firmware?
Update to the latest firmware before modding and then use the sthetix HATS pack.
@@TheModSmith14:21 there are 7 capacitors on top of the 'V2' marking. Do you happen to know the value of the one closest to the flex? The one right above 'V2' writing.
15:05 his soldering kept getting too me, he had it done but kept having to touch it up and making it worse like you had it perfect but kept redoing it and redoing it
The only thing missing from your gears is Soldering Wick or a Solder Pump :)
Do those tools help you with these kinds of jobs?
@@josesshopandservices yes it is easier to pickup excess solder instead of trying to get it out with the soldering iron. Cleaning the soldering iron can do the job, but with excess heat you might desolder the capacitor and overall excess heat is not good anyway. So a small wick or pump which are really cheap will do the job.
Can this be done on a patched v2 switch?
Did everything, get the blue light then either a yellow/green led blinking but keeps booting to Nintendo’s firmware. Already flashed twice following this tutorial, any advice?
Nevermind, noticed that the plate to the right I had it on top of the metal cover, not under, so probably that was the issue. Once I bent it and slid underneath it booted straight to the right thing.
Do you use lead free solder?
I hope he didn't, but lead free is trash nonetheless.
I did. Would not recommend. Lead free solder is hard to flow. It likes to stick to the iron, not the joint. It's great for the environment and for manufacturing, but we're all just doing one mod chip each.
what do i do if it dose not turn on after the v2 cable is soldered on( dose not turn on if i take it off ether)?
Nothing is turning on. As far as I cen tell Nothing is sodered together that should not be. Please help
Did you solve your problem?
where did you get the console shell, looks fantastic.
I received the shell from eXtremeRate and will be creating an installation guide for it shortly. Feel free to use my discount code 'TMS' to get 10% off everything on their website.
I have a V1 switch but I can’t wait for a V2 softmod
It'll never come, good thing these V1/V2 modchips are very very easy to install.
😂😂 goodluck. Lmao
I don’t have a microscope do you think I can use 100x zoom on a Samsung camera instead???
Hi, I got a V1 switch. I have soldered everything but when I turn it on, the chip flashes blue and then ==*. And it goes into the regular switch screen.
Do you know anything? Thanks!
V1? Your switch might have already been unpatched did you check your serial number?

£34.99 for a screw tray seems excessive.
is it ok if i use a screwdriver y06 insted of a 00?
You risk stripping screws when using the wrong type, It’s best to wait and get the correct one.
Would I be able to get someone from a phone fixing shop to solder the mod chips on and stuff?
You can ask in they do that type of soldering
Can I discount the battery after the first boot to couple it
After I finish screwing everything it just button to normal firmware 😢 how will i boot to picofly or will i reflash it

homebrewing unpatchable switches becomes available
Can u mod my oled
What mod would you recommend to someone looking to play their legal games online and pirated games offline without risking a ban?
Two switches
Whould you consider this easier or harder than rgh/jtaging an xbox 360?
It’s definitely harder than all of the Xbox 360 mods, mostly due to the size of the points that you need to solder to.
How much harder is an OLED? because I feel like my 40 year old ass can do this with my usb microscope for sure! great video thanks mate!
not much! its just different points to solder
The OLED uses the same Mariko chip as the V2
EDIT: Apparently it uses a different carrier board which doesn't expose all the signals a modchip needs, so you have to do some digging around on the PCB and use a different flex cable. TIL!
@@valshaped from what i saw they look a little bit different, but i can be wrong
@@Dispnser Yeah, that's my bad. The OLED model hides some signals beneath the solder mask, and is a slightly more involved install.

Hold up, the ROL glow board was one of your projects?
What is the ROL glow board!? I’m new to switch modding and find these videos cool and super informative
Its an old xbox 360 mod that would fade the ring of light on the front in and out in a breathing animation while the console was powered off.
I actually came across an old ROL board with one still fitted in the house yesterday
It was previously documented on, but he did perform it on one of his own 360 consoles.
@@josesshopandservices so its not his product but one he has showcased in the past? (i'm new here)
i have a question: is re pasting the switch optional
No, thermal paste must be cleaned off with IPA and replaced every time you remove the heatsink or disassemble the console for a modchip install.
Can I install this on my switch without soldering?
Nope 👎
So I have this done, what do I do now, my build is 18.0.0 but I can’t update my games unless I get 18.0.1 and atmosphere ain’t updated yet
wait
Would I have to use a V1 or V2 chip on my console if the serial number fell into the, "might be patched" category? I actually went on to try and modding it via the RCM method but I did in fact discover that my console was patched
If you’re unable to enter RCM mode and inject a payload, then you have a V2 Switch.
@@TheModSmith appreciate the response! Have everything I need except for the chip itself which is still in the mail from China haha. Will be using your guides though 🫡
If you have a HAC-001(01), that has a Mariko SoC and needs the "V2" cable.
HAC-001 (Without the 01) is the less efficient Erista, which uses the "V1" cable.
Im really tired of how the scene uses the terms "V1" and "V2" because they even include RCM patched Eristas in the term "V2", which is stupid.
@@jtchoi2003 holy molyyyyyy wait thanks so much. Potentially saved me from soldering on the wrong chip omg lol

Will this version of the firmware on the RP2040 works on the Switch with 18.0.1?
Yes 👍
Can you add cheats to the games like you can on the modded Playstation? I do have a launch switch.
Bruh, you got no disclaimers in your description.
I ain't doing this shit
I really want to do it one day but I don't have the experience, how can I practice? Someone have any recommendations?
I’d practice just by doing some soldering, try some pin headers and when you can do those easily then pickup an SMD solder practice kit from Amazon, they’re about £5 GBP. It’s hard to tell when you’re ready, maybe when you feel ready have a go on a faulty Switch.

if a V1 switch can be modded with RCM why put a mod chip in it?
Some of v1 switch is supported to do rcm and cfw, iirc usually the first batch release in 2017, and some of v1 switch machine released after that already patched by nintendo so you cant directly short the rail with jig and enter rcm. And there, modchip exist for the patched v1 machine and later v2 lite and oled to do cfw
I have softmod v1 switch without modchip and v2 ofw that im planning to do modchip after this video.
The Switch doesn't configure the charge controller in RCM, so charging after the battery runs flat is painfully slow. Like, "30 minutes to reach 5% battery so the thing can turn on" slow. Aside from that, keeping a phone or computer around is perfectly fine.
@@valshaped well why are you letting it die then? that's just all types of bad and the switch wont last very long without needing some repair maintenance to replace the battery periodically
@@doomiedee It only lasts a few weeks in sleep mode when not charging, and constantly short-cycling the battery when it's docked will cause damage too. It's not a common occurrence, but when it does happen, it's frustrating. Turning it completely off will help, but either way, you *have* to push a payload to get it to turn back on and configure the charge controller, whether the battery is dead or not.
