Our dependency on foreign goods and labor along with our dependency on narcotics is going to open the eyes of the next generation of young Americans. 20 years ago, working in manufacturing as an automation and controls technician, I brought this question. Although much of our controls had made in the USA label, that statement is only partially. Many had multiple electrical components, made in China. We were looking at making it possible for a tech or certain managers could log in from home and see the process and make programming changes if necessary, and also at time troubleshoot remotely. I questioned this very fact, that many components were foreign made and could contain hidden spy ware. I was chastised, and told their IT team was the best and my concerns were unwarranted. Why did most of our manufacturing go to China. They couldn't get rich fast enough in the US due to many bureaucratic regulations, licenses, labor cost, little or no worries about law suet's. With a higher margin of profit, investors were happy, and everyone but that foreign worker reaped grand benefits. Bring or manufacturing job home. Americans once built the world's best products; they can do it again.

Quite the opposite, china relies on the US for oil, agriculture, and other products for survival. China only provides cheap slave labor, and in a capitalist world, they lead everyone in that respect. Take away the food and oil, and their 2 year self implosion clock starts.
senator hawley asking the right high level questions, as usual. this does, however leave us with some hard to confront realities: a) chinese strategic thinking has (seemingly) been slithering its tentacles everywhere by exploiting the shareholder greed which prioritises quick money and production over everything else (ie: semiconductor and downstream security). we are now in a situation where... (correct me if im wrong)... the US and the rest of the world has no way of knowing if China has put hardware backdoors (intel chip within a chip style) into products that are already in use all over the world (giving china the power of remote sabotage in the event tensions flare up). b) any military confrontation would result in unacceptable military and civilian damage and casualties for all sides. it is therefore imperative our high level politicians start engaging in less schoolyard style bullying and more in a diplomatic style which matches the position of their high office. simple cheap vote grabbing by pandering to the lowest common denominator on the streets will win elections, but it wont achieve peace or a higher order goal of that nature given the ideological (and imaginary) divisions we are all dealing with at the moment. the only way forward which would not completely unroot the world is for the superpowers to cooperate on some basics. so far one of the very few politicians i have complete confidence in anywhere on the planet :)
