You can see it in your video at 12:12, just below the 'thing.' I guess it is an idle jet but I'm not at all sure. Anyway I'm about to clean the carb on my 2021 6HP Tohatsu, and will soak and clean that second jet too. And...my 'thing' has no screw driver slot, so I can't remove or adjust it, others may find the same on their carb. Thanks again.

Behind the main jet (below it when the carb is on the bench, or actually above it when the carb is fitted to the engine) there is a brass tube with radial holes in it. After you've taken the main jet out, tap the carb gently on the work bench and this tube will fall out. My main jet, the brass tube and what I guess is the idle jet all looked clean. But I soaked everythhing overnight in carb cleaner, blew out every hole on the carb, and now the engine runs perfectly. I lked your use of the wire brush strands, but people should know that they need to be very gentle with carb jets and not risk changing the size of the hole by forcing anything oversized down it. Best to use soft copper wire if you have some.

@@davidconnolly7068 I think thats just how it is. Just pray some carb cleaner in there and blow it out. 95% of issues come from that main jet. As long as that is fully cleaned it will usually run fine.

No...but that sounds like a great idea. I cant remember what AME was but it was aviation IIRC. I was a Marine Crew Chief on CH-46E helos from 87-93 and have worked in aviation ever since.

I always pull main jet/pilot jet(if it has a removable one) nozzle, with a flathead and put the straw on some carb spray up in the carb and blow cleaner in all the holes inside the carb. Make sure it flows through cleanly. then use air compressor and blow each hole out. Use a piece of speaker wire to clean the parts with small holes👍🏻
Good deal. Air compressor definitely helps. The main thing I wanted to share is not to be afraid to give it a shot. Nothing too hard about it. I see way too many little motors running poorly or not a all and the likely fix takes really less than an hour and even less than that if you have done it a time or two.
Hello mate, wonder if you can help me. I took my carburetor off and cleaned it , put it all back, took about 20 pulls, but it probably took time for the fuel to fill up. Anyhow, That skinny black pipe in the middle, is it some sort of overflow and there is also one more on top, the other side. Anyways l noticed they are both missing on mine. Just bought the motor in the summer. So l got it running, but that black pipe , the one you can see running down next to the fuel pipe has just started pissing out, l assume it is fuel and not water ,never checked. So if it is some overflow, its just pissing out fuel, any ideas, perhaps you know more what that pipe is and perhaps the other one , the other side on top. As l said mine are missing. Any idea whats going on ?
If you have fuel overflowing all the time the the float and needle is stuck. Take it back apart and make sure the little needle is properly in the little forks and that the needle is easy to move and the tip is not swollen.

I could not see anything wrong and lm soaking that in brake cleaner, is that ok, or do l ruin that pointed rubber bit. Was hard to see, and was not sure if there was a little hole in that because you called it a needle seat, that's why lm soaking it. If l still have the problem tomorrow, when l reassemble, then l might as well order a new carb.They are as cheap as 40 dollars on Amazon.
Just an update, put all back together, float and needle seat looked fine, no blockages,and primed the bulb hard and now it just pisses out petrol, from that overflow nozzle, that has no pipe on it. Time to give up and order new carb. Best now for peace of mind. Could not trust that carb now. Thanks for helping.
Thanks for the video. Small learning curve makes it quite easy after the first attempt. Had a gummed up carb on a 6hp Tohatsu, despite draining the bowl over winter. Cleaned the main jet with a steel wire strand, which allowed it to start. But could not idle. As there is no jet to clean, but a circuit, I left it soaking in White Spirit. Morning after resulted in a telltale mucus residue at the bottom of the container. Voilá, runs like new.
No problem. Read the comment below from Iboats. When I had the main jet out the small nozzle/straw above it could have come out for cleaning as well. So I should have taken that out while I had it apart. Glad it helped.
I have a 2003 6 hp Suzuki first I replaced with new carburetor now no spark! Ignition coil will be in today hope you show your adjusting air mixture screw for proper running 💯
It may be different on the Suzuki. But generally there is a factory setting. Something like...turn it all the way in and then back out 1 and a half turns. But look for the Suzuki manual for your engine or call Suzuki to get that setting. Hopefully the coil fixes it. If not really take a close look at the kill switch.
Great vid! I'm just starting to trouble shoot my tohatsu and I'm finding it hard to check spark when I don't have a second pair of hands to pull the flywheel/cord. How/where are you injecting the starter fluid? On my carbed 90 yamaha it can just pull the air cover off and spray into the throats. I was hoping to check the spark before pulling the carb off. Sorry I missed your question I believe the air intake is the black box on the front of the carb. I believe the opening faces down. Its been a while since I even had the cover off so I dont remember specifically. Just a few squirts under that black box. I cant remember of there was a screen of not.
More than likely the main jet is still not perfectly clean Also the other port with the needle valve is for idle. If it still won't run right look into the fuel pump or fuel pickup. Good luck.
You talking about the spacer helped me so much,,I had gasket and the spacer on the on other side and single gasket on that side.. I've been going crazy..I usually take pictures before..but was hot in the sun cooking my face,thank you for this video🤙🏼
thanks for the video! i have the same 6hp motor. i want to know to winterize it can i put fuel stabilizer to fuel let it runs for 5mins, then disconnect the fuel line and run the motor until the motor out of gas. even some stabilizer mixed with fuel stay in carb won't cause gum up to the vaults in the carburetor right?
Good video, i have a european suzuki 2.5 df and it does not have a petrol pump, yours has a petrol pump, have you ever disassembled it? does it only have 2 pipes, one for the inlet and one for the gasoline outlet?
Usually where it's mounted is the third port where crankcase pressure acts on a bellows. That along with a couple of check valves creates a pumping action. Very low pressure. Very easy to change. Depending on the year and model you can get the entire assembly or get the parts to rebuild existing pump. If your not sure just get the entire assy. Usually 2 screws two hoses/clamps. Piece of cake.
My Mercury keeps flooding itself, I think. Is your needle valve loose on that little metal ridge where the float is or should the needle valve be snug? It's got 2 little arm wires that I'm wondering if they should be tighter on there if that makes sense.

I’ve taken apart the carb, cleaned the hoses, put in new spark plug, fresh fuel and still won’t start.. thinking it may be either the starter switch that comes with the release clip or something else ?
That could definitely do it. Generally when figuring out a start problem you divide it into two categories right off the bat. Spark problem or fuel problem. One easy way to check is to remove the spark plug, rest it on a metal part to help ground it...and then pull the cord. Look for a nice bright blue spark on the spark plug. It helps if you can do this not in direct sunlight. And if you cant see the plug well while you are pulling the cord have someone else pull the cord and look closely. If you are getting spark then its not the kill switch. But if no spark that's the first thing I would look at.

@DL I typically use carb cleaner. But you can use whatever is on hand. Acetone, alcohol works too. DL..i just noticed you may have been asking what solution for an ultrasonic cleaner. For that i think there are specific solutions. I dont know off hand.
Hi...would you know???....thanks for video, but I have slightly different problem....I bought 6hp from 2012 very little driven...2 days went completely without problem and then suddenly today in full throttle drive went into even higher spinning as if it fall in neutral and boat slowed down....engin is starting without problem...on lower throttle it goes well....only thing I did was I changed propell before this ride....could that be this? The propell is older type, but of course fits to it....sounds like nonsense that it could be this 🤔
Sounds like the prop has spun on the hub. There is a rubber insert between the actual prop and the shaft. It can get worn out. Was this a new prop you installed or an old one to try out? Put the old prop back on and see if the issue goes away. On larger engines/props you can change out just the hub. But on these smaller ones I am not certain but I think you need a new prop.
I have Tohatsu 6hp engine and I have a problem. When engine warms up to working temperature white smokes comes from water. on any gears and RPMS. And the smell is not good. What could couse this type of problems? Not a lot of smokes but everyone can see it when i am going out of the shore. Do you have any advice where to search the problem?
Try using a thicker oil. Sounds like your piston rings are worn out or seized and allowing oil to seep through into the chamber and burning up creating all that smoke. Have you checked if there's oil consumption between oil changes ?
Did you remove the internal fuel tank or did it come from the factory without one I have 5hp mercury outboard and it's the same as yours just with the tank
I have a Yamaha 6hp from 2014 with a similar carb. The needle slipped off when I removed the float and now I'm having trouble reassembling because there is a small spring that I can't figure out how to attach to the assembly. Do you know the one I'm referring to? Wondering if you have run into this issue.

I would not call running the engine on the hose and flush kit "proper" by any means. But it does not damage the impeller provided you have very good water flow. The water gurgles back and forth between the impeller and it stays wet. I just changed the impeller on this exact motor about 8 days ago and it was still nice an pliable. It has been flushed like this many times. Occasionally I flush it and let it run until it runs the fuel out. But most of the time I use the flush adapter with salt away and dont run the engine. But for test purposes its just my own opinion that you can do this as long as you have very good water flow. The other thing this doesnt do is test the impeller and pick up.
Worst decision I ever made, bought last yr this brand new 2023 6hp tohatsu and had nothing but problems, from dying in the ocean, to utterly difficult starts, to bogging down issues to completely dying after it got overheated when was running it dry in big barrel of water(~50 gallon), ran it approx an hr or less? Came back n motor shut down and not starting, cables warped, throttle cables warped, cleaned carb, nothing helps motor is not starting, and we dont have much tohatsu dealerships in our area, one that we do have has crazy long waiting line, DO NOT BUY. Spent $1500+ from online outboards

After you see the hole do an extra cleaning with a piece of a braid fishing line. Works very good.

The needle valve attached to the float should be free moving. Of its snug that will cause flooding for sure.

Do you have a good pee stream coming out? If the impeller is damaged and water flow is low it will overheat and make steam. White smoke may be steam.

You can order them with internal or external tank. I bought this one used and it happened to have external 5 gallon tank.
What is the water to outboard connection you have?
I believe its a kit you can buy from tohatsu. Its a flush kit.

This hose connector is just for turn-off flushing
Running your engine without proper water flow threw impeller can damage it easily
I would not call running the engine on the hose and flush kit "proper" by any means. But it does not damage the impeller provided you have very good water flow. The water gurgles back and forth between the impeller and it stays wet. I just changed the impeller on this exact motor about 8 days ago and it was still nice an pliable. It has been flushed like this many times. Occasionally I flush it and let it run until it runs the fuel out. But most of the time I use the flush adapter with salt away and dont run the engine. But for test purposes its just my own opinion that you can do this as long as you have very good water flow. The other thing this doesnt do is test the impeller and pick up.

Worst decision I ever made, bought last yr this brand new 2023 6hp tohatsu and had nothing but problems, from dying in the ocean, to utterly difficult starts, to bogging down issues to completely dying after it got overheated when was running it dry in big barrel of water(~50 gallon), ran it approx an hr or less? Came back n motor shut down and not starting, cables warped, throttle cables warped, cleaned carb, nothing helps motor is not starting, and we dont have much tohatsu dealerships in our area, one that we do have has crazy long waiting line, DO NOT BUY. Spent $1500+ from online outboards
