I bought this a few weeks ago and this review is extremely accurate. I have mine on my deck and it has done a phenomenal job keeping bugs out. I really do enjoy it, it's practically maintenence free. I have mine set on an extention cord with a sensor it comes on at dusk and goes off at dawn. it basically involves no effort from me other than the hours of enjoyment I've had from watching it kill big bugs.
I have a vintage one of these, it's the same style but a big bigger and it still works. 34 years old and still kicking. I did have to repair it once. One of the wires on the high voltage side going to the grid, the insulation burned through and was arcing to the metal case so a slit piece of aquarium tubing and a few zip ties fixed the problem.
LOL - when zappers first came out in the early 80's (I was in Jr high school then), we got one for the patio. Since I lived on a farm we had plenty of bugs and after a rainstorm they would REALLY come out. I'd park a lounge chair nearby and watch for hours. Frogs from the pasture would find their way to all the commotion and in the morning they had all gotten so fat from eating all the zapped bugs they could barely move. Ahhh.....life as a kid...
1). Usage for flies. I don't care about the night critters (mosquitos, moths), but only flies during the day on my patio. Can they be timed to only come on at dawn and go off at dusk? 2). Should we be concerned that it will kill friendly animals/insects like bees, lizards and frogs? What solution have you found to help eliminate this? Perhaps some smaller-hold mesh wire or 1/4-3/8 in. screen wrapped around the unit so just small insects like mosquitoes, flies, moths can enter through adapted smaller holes? What idea have you folks come up with as a solution because it's one of the dangers/disappoints at this point to use electronic to "throw the baby out with the dishwater?" Thanks
How I solved the "Large aperture" grill openings which endangered lizards, frogs and beneficial bees was a no-brainer for me. I purchased a $4.00+ "disposable grill topper" (aluminum for the BBQ grills), took one and with a scissors, cut a swatch of one to go around the grill (and a leftover piece at the rear) and tied them with 6 inch zip ties at three places on each side through the existing bugzapper, cutting off the excess. That way there's 1/4 - 3/8 opening holes throughout to allow my "pet flies and mosquitos" to get in and they don't check out.
Our first night with the Flotron, reminded me of the US Navy Kamikaze pickett stations around Okinawa. The skeeters would fly into it then down spiral out of the sky in a trail of smoke just like the Zekes at their last battle!
Glad you think it's cool! I do only test live traps for mice, rodents and other mammals. That's because they can be released safely in places where they will be happier and not bother anyone. With parasites like mosquitoes and many other insects that prey directly on humans, there wouldn't really be any safe place to release them, so I review kill traps in those situations like I did before in my review of the Victor Poison Free insect trap. Thanks for your concern!
I had one of these years ago and it worked great except for the bugs that got stuck between the zapper and went on to buzz for a long time. Sometimes I had to unplug it and scrap the bugs off. Now I am having problems with my neighbor's flies coming into my house. This guy loves fertilizers for some reason, and we all know that poop attracts flies like nothing else. My question is, is there any problem with this type of zapper being inside, instead of outside?
Great video I bought one last week from Stoneberry, model 14024 Total Home Shield Package as it comes with a GH 4 indoor bug zapper.Great deal on them but I went to the Flowtron website to buy extra bulbs for just in case and a wall bracket and some extra attractant carts. I agree it does the job nicely and its USA made.I had a nice 15 ft extension outdoor cord in black which makes it look great outside.
The Amazon description mentions to not use this within 25 feet of intended human activity. Does it run the risk of setting something on fire? I live in a ground floor apartment with a backyard. There are plants that I wouldn't want to hang it near. But if I hang it anywhere else, is it bad to keep near people? Is the UV light strong enough to affect eyes/skin/etc?
Chandler Moses They advise the 25 ft. rule for two reasons: First, these things literally explode a bug with high voltage. Insect parts can scatter for several feet in all directions. Second, since the light attracts insects, you wouldn't want it close to where people gather. Your situation is a little tricky, being in an apartment. You might have a neighbor (or neighbors) that would object to the popping noise.
Chandler Moses I run one of these in my house, and have it right by my laundry. Works great for when flies get into the house. Got it some years ago when we got a lot of basin flies or something, and they were driving us crazy. Never figured out what the source was, but didn't need to once we got this unit. I have the smallest one.
another reason is you'll be the attractant ...the thinking is if you put it where you are they'll come to you an not the machine...I know when I walk outside an get close to look I immediately become covered in 'skeeters...i walk around it hoping they'll go for the light an smell but I must be better....grrr... I've known ppl who you can sit with an they never get bitten wish I had what they have...
I need something for inside my house. There are always some that manage to come in with us. I'm like a super buffet to them and their bites make whelps on me. Do you have anything for me?
It's a different line than the BK, and they didn't send us one, so it wouldn't have really worked to talk about it. Glad you got one for a good price though!
How many controlled experiments have been conducted? Place this in an enclosed room with this in a location and how many does it kill over a certain amount of time? Most locations I've visited state the mosquitoes find this by accident rather than by design. Mosquitoes 'smell' the CO2 (carbon dioxide) by people to locate them.
Dale Pittman They have done studies but all the ones I know of were done outside. One of them, in Florida in 1997, showed a bug zapper killed 10,000 bugs in one night. Only 8 of the bugs were mosquitoes. Being a blood-sucking insect, they're attracted to CO2, not the light. I've had the best results by using a zapper in conjunction with an Octenol lure.
@@dwightsteinmetz3772 I posted this above but seemed copying what I found related to ur info. My 2 cents: I want to kill mosquitoes. Not every phototropic flying bug. Problem with this type of zapper. Mosquitoes aren't attracted to that light. As I understand it they hunt with smell, first. Its why the attractant octenol(and CO2 also) is added. Next, as the smell draws them closer, they "see" an object, within 10 - 50 feet. Finally, they zero in to the heat source. So, to me, it would seem the optimal zapper would have replaceable bait, be light and dark coloring like a panda(maybe a free hanging mobile. Then a very low wattage heat(IR) bulb. Followed by a zap grid that can react to the small size of a mosquito. BTW the acreage covered is only increasing because the bulb is more powerful and can be seen further away. But the bait is the most effective component out there. And yes I am reconstructing an old Flowtron to have a 25watt heat bulb from a pet reptile tank.
I have the exact model in the video. Flowtron zappers are well made and draw lots of bugs, but they tend to be rather 'bare bones'....not even an on-off switch. My Stinger zapper (#BK310) has the dusk to dawn sensor, shuts itself off at sunrise.
looking at all the reviews for the newer model Stingers it looks like they don't last very long...over 20% on Amazon gave it a one star because of longevity...one guy said he had one that worked 34 yrs an all metal version but the 'new' one died in two weeks an more than a few complained that when it rained it zapped the zapper...maybe one day someone will come along with a mosquito killer that will work 24/7 an be inexpensive..not in my lifetime I'm afraid.
Actually moths are pests too, their larvae destroy plant life. They are agricultural pest too. Some moths are fabric eaters,so they are pest indoors too. Moths are no benefit to mankind, they serve as food for other pest, such as bats, but there are no bats in the city. Kill the moths, kill the wasps, kill the mosquitoes, kill the white flies, kill the flies, kill the fungus gnats. I pace pieces of fruit inside and attracts fungus gnats and fruit flies to die. Decomposing fruit gives off CO2 too,and attracts mosquitoes.
does this zapper work in day light hours too?....only we are bothered by flys getting under our verandah during the day, which is awful when we want to eat al fresco on a sunny afternoon!
I've been using my for years to get rid of the pesky mosquitos and what not. I think its safe as long as you isolate the unit from any combustion-al materials like curtain, table cloths and paper products because an insect may still fly away in flames and that will kill you if you don't take the proper precautions. Remember keep the unit in a well ventilated place because uv has a tendency to make down oxygen molecules. Be careful.

It kills flying insects that are attracted to bright light and heat. They don't really attract bees. I've had one plugged in for a whole summer and never found any bee carcasses
My Flowtron worked great at first, but now, it doesn't really zap as it should. Seems like it isn't generating as much voltage as it used to. But is that possible? Does it have capacitors that could have failed? Have not taken it apart yet, hoped someone else could comment who has dont that?
