The fact that Sam asked Liam what the shittiest class and race was before their first session, then said hold my beer and proceeded to be arguably the most crucial character in the party and easily the character with the most progression and personal growth in my opinion. Amazing.
I'm always slightly confused about this because they started playing Pathfinder and gnomes in Pathfinder DO have a good charisma boost and can make great bards. It's only in 5e that gnomes are more based on intelligence. But I'm assuming they directly translated their stats from the Pathfinder game instead of completely remaking their characters since we know Scanlan's charisma easily reached 20.
Yeah, I like FCG so far and what I’ve seen of Gnott (at episode 20), but miss the music and comedy from Scanlan. Was so glad for Legends season 2 episode 10 with “Rage!”
I love how half of the time Sam starts to sing a song and the whole table is disappointed or embarrassed, only to join in after the first 3 lines whole hearted and with out any shame. It’s great.
Can we get some appreciation for Taliesin, who literally recognizes every song instantly and joins in as either bass or lower harmony??? Like wow whattaguy
I like to think that it's actually Percy with his education in everything also took some music/singing lessons and is kinda really good at it but doesn't want to do that primarily.
@@SmeliFishy I mean, as voice actors, they are all the closest you can irl get to bards. I would *kill* to see an "oops all bards" oneshot from them lol
At 19:09 listening to Taliesens “come on a rampage with me” under Sam’s higher version has me dying of laughter. I love how he just improves Sam’s performances as the perfect back up singer. It’s the best.
I mean, at about 11 minutes when Talisen responds to Sam too. 😄 "Do you want to build a machine gun?" "Why yes I really do." 🤣🤣 that one gets me every single time, just another example I suppose.
I'm mad that there never was a "I'm still Scanlan" performance. I legit hear that every time I listen to Elton John, and I would pay to hear Sams version.
The icon of Sam as Scanlan is such that none of the rest of party even touched Bard in the main campaign. Even when Marisha played Bard, she prepared in advance, but even she wasn't that spontaneous.
Personally I'm just waiting for Liam to play the Shakespearean actor college of eloquence Bard with all his inspirations being soliloquies or modified famous speeches. 😆
@@machdude3366 I wish we could see all of Matt's homebrew subclasses played at CR in future. I don't know when he'll stop creating those, but hope to see it all. Could be played by various guests, personally I'm counting mostly for Blood Magic Wizard, Maestro Bard, Profane Soul Bloodhunter and the Runechild Sorcerer.
It's a good way to play a Bard. As a player, I had a book of bard. It was a collection of modified songs, poems, and stories that I could pull from whenever the situation called for it.
i miss scanlan. i dont think anyone will ever top the energy he brought to the table. imo chetney comes close but sam just owned every aspect of the scan man
Pit Fiend baby now you're mine at 34:52 will probably always be my personal favorite. It's hard to improv a parody song on the spot, let alone one that still rhymes well and doesn't use too many/too few syllables in any of the lines. Technically "baby it's a sign" is one too many, but he does so well with the delivery it's barely noticeable. Despite the panic in his eyes, it was amazingly done and it's a song I actually find myself quietly singing at work or when I'm bored sometimes. Well done to Sam in general for his performances and especially for that amazing cutting words.
The fun of that song isn't the fact that he improvised it, but the group also harmonizing with it. I've always imagined in some of his epic numbers, the rest of the party also instinctually do it too.
"yenk you will be our friend" is my favorite personally. Simply because of the shock of everyone at the table because they had no idea how it was going to end.
I think this was always one of my most favourite things about C1, how they all came together when Scanlan would sing his songs. Sam is just such a wonderful bard XD
My headcannon being any time the rest of the cast joins in, their characters join too, and thats what helps with the inspirations. Bolstering their own spirits so to speak
Sam is a genius, and he single-handedly raised the bar for Bards in D&D and I both love him and hate him for it. "Pit-Fiend Baby" is my favorite, with honorable mentions to "Eye of the Goliath", "Semi-Fucked Fight", "Bedroom Shitter" and the Trololo Song.
There were so many things I loved about this video, such as everyone vibing to Scanlan's music or the creature that was so offended about being called ugly that he drowned himself.
i think the thing i miss about scanlan's songs the most is the rest of the crew joining in, we dont have anything like that now other than "makin' my way"
@@KahinAhmed72 they can't really use original and alternative versions of songs either. Only what Sam came up with that was only his during playing that campaign, like the Boring Ballad of Derrig.
Because of the number of times I've listened to this and your other compilations of the songs, I fully remember the songs with the cast reactions in the background
I love how the whole group gets in it with him and hype him up!!! By far the best bard, but just as much the best group for having his back too!!! I don’t think there’s ever gonna be a more iconic bard ever again
All this time, peeps... It was in front of us all this time. The real God isn't Taliesin, it's Sam! Look how at 21:34 The Goth Man prays to the Cultured One... It's all the evidence we need!
Wow, the amount of work to put together this video... Thank you for this. And for the timestamps. With links. Thank you. ... If i ever get 500+ hours of free time I really need to rewatch that first campaign.
I was feeling rather unmotivated to work, but I just completed all of my chemistry homework while watching this. I suppose Scanlan gave me 1d6 inspiration.
Campaign 1 will forever be the pinnacle of Critical Role... sure, they've got good stuff now, but holy shit throughout the entire first campaign the unhinged improv is just unbeatable... Travis and Sam are easily the quickest on their feet and have a wicked sharp wit when it comes to rolling with the punches. Phenomenal RP from them and some genuinely touching moments centered around them. Still remember bawling with Scanlan's wish while watching live.
I haven´t watched campaign 1 and just started with campaign 2 (I´m at episode 36 ). So I know Sam Riegel and his creativity but DAMN how does he come up with so many songs and lyrics!? I´m baffled.🤣
i think my favorite will always be the "do you wanna build a machine gun?" and tal replying "why yes i really do!" also the hamilton parodies cuz of the vm musical and i just love how they used the original bit edit cuz i keep coming back to this vid (yes im making a list now cuz this is getting long): everyone's reaction around 21:10 when Sam reveals that it's the Redskin's fight song the Gern songs Sam nailing the troll song you know, as one does all the songs directed at Pike (cuz they are hilarious but sweet, edit: that one from the end credits of tlovm *chef's kiss*) every time Scanlan casts the Mansion and singing something house related the xmas songs about dragons pit fiend baby now you're mine whenever Tal joins in with the bass Kash. a-aaaah! Scanlan and Vex being slightly flirty for shits an' giggles whenever he gives inspiration to her (also, b r o o m) the others playing Scanlan when Sam is away and singing (personal fav, Tal singing Roxanne) uuh you'we swo scawy, u-uuw you'we swo scawy uwu (sorry to everyone whos reading this) Scan...lan...sitto. the part where he and Vex were looking for the book in Ioun's library and had to sing in order to find it (Matt going oh my goood, we are t h o s e people...) your Minxie brings all the boys to the yard, and they're like (✨security guard!✨✌sorry again) don't worry be happy but sung by a mildly irritated Scanlan to Percy how about 2400 critters chanting Vax'ildan? *crowds picks it up* now a d12 can be rouoolled mi-i-iss you random limbo song Sam, Laura, Liam and Ashley going awa-awa-arra-raa-rrows
*listens and sits up when he spoofs "Hail to the Redskins" (before anyone says anything that is LITERALLY the name of the old Washington Commander's Fight Song) and looks up where he is from* Oh crap, didn't know he was from D.C. Then seeing Travis's face when Sam told him what it was based off of, priceless.
Lol I've always assumed that in-campaign, Scanlan's singing summoned a bunch of spectral backup singers, which was OOC the rest of the group singing along.
Can i point out how stable that trololol was. Given that this kinda impromtu and Sam is sitting which does make singing specially breath control harder
a list of my faves for myself: 7:08 "and you miss me" 9:02 "boom clap the sound of your gun" 10:34 "tell her your with a gnome" 11:32 "here come scanlan, everythings gonna be alright" 12:17 "distraction" 15:42 "i want to fly away, yeah yeah yeah" 16:51"arrows and bows they fire" 18:25 "he is no hollaback gnome" 19:09 "everybodys raging now" 19:47 "purple worm" 20:52 "eye bitten twice shy" 21:57 "with a bearded face" 24:33 "trololol" 25:40 "beard of strongjaw" 26:51 "westrun girls" 27:27 "percys gun wont you come" 28:07 "i hate rakasha" 30:08 "tearing up your heart when she heals you" 31:14 "come on come get your scanlan on" 33:20 "youre a fiend and a confidant" 33:37 "you see him larkin" 33:45 "your tryna kill a white dragon" 34:52 "pit fiend baby now youre mine" 35:31 "heal thee" 36:13 "and his hair was parted in middle" 36:31 "thordak the cinder king
Thanks for putting this together! I needed this extended laugh to get me ready for the week. Gonna save this for when I need to crack up in the future.

@@JRTIntervencion fixed :)
28:41 should be at 29:41
I'm just so damn impressed he managed to have most every one of these as unique songs
Cursed playlist with all of these
The fact that Sam asked Liam what the shittiest class and race was before their first session, then said hold my beer and proceeded to be arguably the most crucial character in the party and easily the character with the most progression and personal growth in my opinion. Amazing.
Laura was the shittiest class
I'm always slightly confused about this because they started playing Pathfinder and gnomes in Pathfinder DO have a good charisma boost and can make great bards. It's only in 5e that gnomes are more based on intelligence. But I'm assuming they directly translated their stats from the Pathfinder game instead of completely remaking their characters since we know Scanlan's charisma easily reached 20.
@@ATinyWaffle they switched to DND for class and race bonuses. Scanlan reached 20 without his racial bonus
Yeah, I like FCG so far and what I’ve seen of Gnott (at episode 20), but miss the music and comedy from Scanlan. Was so glad for Legends season 2 episode 10 with “Rage!”
@@stevenweller9413 Just a head up: Sam's character's name in campaign 2 is, "Nott". No G in front.
I love how half of the time Sam starts to sing a song and the whole table is disappointed or embarrassed, only to join in after the first 3 lines whole hearted and with out any shame. It’s great.
The bard class was created for Sam Riegel. They didn’t know it at the time, but it was destiny. Sam is the chosen one.
Which makes Liam the prophet!
I feel like all the VM characters are perfect fits and representations of those classes
😂The bard class was created by Gary Gigax
Can we get some appreciation for Taliesin, who literally recognizes every song instantly and joins in as either bass or lower harmony??? Like wow whattaguy
I like to think that it's actually Percy with his education in everything also took some music/singing lessons and is kinda really good at it but doesn't want to do that primarily.
just look at 33:46 and his amazing adlibs and bass
Also love Marisha getting into almost every song
@@SmeliFishy I mean, as voice actors, they are all the closest you can irl get to bards. I would *kill* to see an "oops all bards" oneshot from them lol
Whattaguy
"I'm a hitter, I'm a winner, I'm a bedroom shitter" is never not gonna absolutely kill me
where is in the time stamp?
@@HolligaMan 19:56
And it's all true
Sam predicting Amber Heard?
@@gilessaint-loup2426 ruined it
At 19:09 listening to Taliesens “come on a rampage with me” under Sam’s higher version has me dying of laughter.
I love this. Seeing Sam take it from a gag to a bit, then putting the real effort behind it and finally the animated show was quite the journey
1:58 Scanlan Shaming a Man to Death has got to be one of, if not, my absolute favorite moment
1 hour of joke songs and only like 3 repeats. Sam is a fucking legend! No better singing bard before or after him for sure!
36:58
There's something so perfectly Scanlan to me about how Matt is describing this beautiful trill on the flute, then Sam busts out "The Hustle"
Watching Matt trying to interject, but not wanting to stop Sam is precious!
I'm mad that there never was a "I'm still Scanlan" performance.
I legit hear that every time I listen to Elton John, and I would pay to hear Sams version.
Holy shit, that would be crazy awesome especially little bit after reunion with Scanlan when they discover he was an crime boss for a while.
Laura and Marisha just vibing to whatever madness Sam puts out. Marisha is always first on the fingersnaps.
51:25 I love how you can see Matt just go “wtf is happening?”
@@stevenalvarado265 College of Tragedy is a Matt Mercer creation.
It was a collection of modified songs, poems, and stories that I could pull from whenever the situation called for it.
we finally got a new bard with Lou.... only to have Sam also create a new bard to keep the title
Something I love is he inspires EVERYONE. He doesn't play favourites, he supports the entire team.
i miss scanlan. i dont think anyone will ever top the energy he brought to the table. imo chetney comes close but sam just owned every aspect of the scan man
Pit Fiend baby now you're mine at 34:52 will probably always be my personal favorite.
I knew I wasn't the only one singing that little banger to myself, its just too good
I wish I could do improv songs for a living, I'm pretty damn good at it and Scanlan is all about it
"yenk you will be our friend" is my favorite personally. Simply because of the shock of everyone at the table because they had no idea how it was going to end.
Mine is the Cheap Thrills parody I thought that one was very well one done and I could see an entire song of it coming to fruiting even
I think this was always one of my most favourite things about C1, how they all came together when Scanlan would sing his songs. Sam is just such a wonderful bard XD
I love watching him slowly get more and more confident singing these silly covers around the group, getting louder and quicker on the draw.
31:14 Best song of them all. I could totally jam to his version...
This has always been my favourite too. I would totally buy a full version of this song if he wrote one
The background music moves with the song too
Sam Riegel is a unique combination of a menace and an international treasure.
41:38 love how Liam and Laura collide in laughter 😆
I regularly come back to watch this video. Man I miss Scanlan's songs
35:46 is probably my favorite because it’s not even his move and Matt couldn’t help joining in despite telling Sam to stop
That and Laura Bailey 😍
My headcannon being any time the rest of the cast joins in, their characters join too, and thats what helps with the inspirations. Bolstering their own spirits so to speak
I love how Taliesin knows all of his songs and joins in lol.
When you've been living as an omnipresent being for one hundred thousand years you pick up a song from time to time
A couple times the whole party gets some good harmony going.
It's been at least 5 years since I first saw it and that "you ugly, you ugly" sequence still lives in my brain rent free
I love 38:46 because you can see how much they missed Scanlans songs while he was gone
So are we not gonna talk about that amazing impromptu harmony from everyone else at 16:05-16:14
Sam is a genius, and he single-handedly raised the bar for Bards in D&D and I both love him and hate him for it.
"Pit-Fiend Baby" is my favorite, with honorable mentions to "Eye of the Goliath", "Semi-Fucked Fight", "Bedroom Shitter" and the Trololo Song.
2:07
Thats the best vicious mockerly line if i ever heard one
I love the idea of Vox machina backing up scanlan when he roasts people in song
26:12 can we appreciate how well the group harmonized here.
Love how everyone, even Matt, started to sing Opposites attract the moment Sam sang "i take six steps back"
What made it amazing was you could literally see Sam creating these lyrics in his head. Best freestyles ever
33:46 I mean we know Sam is amazing, but Tal's bass and adlibs wereso amazing here.
I love how Taliesin joins in so often and is disgusted the rest
There were so many things I loved about this video, such as everyone vibing to Scanlan's music or the creature that was so offended about being called ugly that he drowned himself.
The absolute death and dissapointment in Travis Eyes, when he hears its the redskins fight song! :'D Priceless :'D
There's murder in those eyes for sure
i would have love to see the chat reaction on that one
I like to imagine that every time Scanlan bursts into song, everyone else joins in.
i think the thing i miss about scanlan's songs the most is the rest of the crew joining in, we dont have anything like that now other than "makin' my way"
31:14 is so good it could be his theme song
And with Laura’s amazing percussion
Seeing how Travis looks at the beginning and the end of the song is the meaning of bardic inspiration.
It’s been stuck in my head for weeks
They’ll probably make a rendition of this on Season 2 of “The Legend of Vox Machina”.
@@KahinAhmed72 they can't really use original and alternative versions of songs either. Only what Sam came up with that was only his during playing that campaign, like the Boring Ballad of Derrig.
Also something else, you just see Marisha light up every time and join in when Sam starts singing. She the hall to his Oates 😂
Because of the number of times I've listened to this and your other compilations of the songs, I fully remember the songs with the cast reactions in the background
gotta give Liam credit for trying at 37:47... not half bad
It’s so crazy watching some of the early used streams compared to now. Crazy how they gave all grown and it makes my heart happy
My favorite thing is when ever sam starts singing marisha is always the first one to carry the vibe
35:00 I love the fact that it was the girls and Travis that did the high part.
Distracting the DM is half the battle. Sam/Scanlan is undisputed all-around MVP of campaign 1.
Grog may have solod a boss, Sam solod the dm
26:14 When the group chimes in just sends me, so good!
Sam has such a beautiful voice, I can't wait to hear him singing more in season 2
My favorite part is that he's committed to the bit, but he's also a SUPER good singer.
they get so much better as he levels up....... god this whole show is just pure perfection
Sam: *(launches into Name Game because Anna Ripley)*
Taliesin: *(visibly pained)*
I love how the whole group gets in it with him and hype him up!!! By far the best bard, but just as much the best group for having his back too!!! I don’t think there’s ever gonna be a more iconic bard ever again
Gosh, I don't even know the context in most of them, but it's hilarious either way. Sam is pure joy.
Marisha: dances supportively
Okay but like
I know this video is about Sam and his Scanlan songs but Taliesin singing along is BEAUTIFUL
Talesin and Marisha always jamming out makes it lol
I was feeling rather unmotivated to work, but I just completed all of my chemistry homework while watching this.
I suppose Scanlan gave me 1d6 inspiration.
he only hands out d12s boyo.
I like to imagine that when the rest of the cast sings along so are their characters
Bro it’s actually mad impressive how quickly they can come together on a 6-7 part harmony. Like… that’s nuts 😂😂
Knowing this by heart is my special talent
21:18 is the most betrayed I've ever seen Travis
I haven´t watched campaign 1 and just started with campaign 2 (I´m at episode 36 ). So I know Sam Riegel and his creativity but DAMN how does he come up with so many songs and lyrics!? I´m baffled.🤣
pit fiend baby now you're mine goes so incredibly hard
i think my favorite will always be the "do you wanna build a machine gun?" and tal replying "why yes i really do!"
also the hamilton parodies cuz of the vm musical and i just love how they used the original bit
edit cuz i keep coming back to this vid (yes im making a list now cuz this is getting long):
everyone's reaction around 21:10 when Sam reveals that it's the Redskin's fight song
the Gern songs
Sam nailing the troll song you know, as one does
all the songs directed at Pike (cuz they are hilarious but sweet, edit: that one from the end credits of tlovm *chef's kiss*)
every time Scanlan casts the Mansion and singing something house related
the xmas songs about dragons
pit fiend baby now you're mine
whenever Tal joins in with the bass
Kash. a-aaaah!
Scanlan and Vex being slightly flirty for shits an' giggles whenever he gives inspiration to her (also, b r o o m)
the others playing Scanlan when Sam is away and singing (personal fav, Tal singing Roxanne)
uuh you'we swo scawy, u-uuw you'we swo scawy uwu (sorry to everyone whos reading this)
Scan...lan...sitto.
the part where he and Vex were looking for the book in Ioun's library and had to sing in order to find it (Matt going oh my goood, we are t h o s e people...)
your Minxie brings all the boys to the yard, and they're like (✨security guard!✨✌sorry again)
don't worry be happy but sung by a mildly irritated Scanlan to Percy
how about 2400 critters chanting Vax'ildan? *crowds picks it up*
now a d12 can be rouoolled
mi-i-iss you
random limbo song
Sam, Laura, Liam and Ashley going awa-awa-arra-raa-rrows
Brian W Foster wasn't lying when he said that every single one of these was fucking gold
11:16 sign that I am Too Gay To Function number 4362 - getting distracted by Travis flexing his pecs during the singing 😂
This is about to get me through my gym time
he is a genius and a top entertainer. hands down
This has easily become one of my favourite videos to put on for casual background music, thank you so much for putting this together
I watched way more than I thought I would watch of this
and I get the feeling imma finish watching it eventually
11:17 I lost my absolute shit at Taliesin respondingn lmao
I’d pay good money for a Christmas album sung by scanlan or really any album
Coming back after the recent announcement is..... Gods, the man is such a legend
I need to listen to sth while studying for exams and this is now my playlist
and people wonder why critical role hit it like it did, sam is pure genius
One of many reasons why VM was the best campaign
Lol I've always assumed that in-campaign, Scanlan's singing summoned a bunch of spectral backup singers, which was OOC the rest of the group singing along.
this makes me want to run a game where the party is a band 😂
26:12 Dat Harmony Tho!
"I have taught Vecna Counterspell" is a raw ass line
Can i point out how stable that trololol was. Given that this kinda impromtu and Sam is sitting which does make singing specially breath control harder

I love how quickly Marisha just starts vibing out and joining in with the clapping every time.
I appreciate you so much for putting them all in one video, I love everytime Sam sings
i don't regret even a single minute. Great work Dani
This is awesome, thanks for spending the time finding and mixing :D
Thanks for putting this together! I needed this extended laugh to get me ready for the week. Gonna save this for when I need to crack up in the future.
someone should make a spotify playlist based on these lmfao
there isnt but someone did make a cover of these songs, well some of them.
I'm honestly almost as impressed by how damned quickly everyone picks up on what he's singing.
This is a montage I didn't know I needed. Thank you.
