How Binge Watching is Changing Shows

  • In the age of streaming, people have begun watching shows a new way - by bingeing them. Based on netflix’s data on viewer habits, their average viewer spends two hours watching a day, and considering that 16.4% of teens mainly consume media using either netflix or youtube, it would be a reasonable assumption that the average viewer on netflix falls into the younger age range. In comparison, Nielsen reports for cable depict the average viewer in the 18-34 year old age range also watching an average of two hours of television per day. Since ads take up an average of 1/4th of tv run time, this reduces the time spent watching actual shows on television for cable to an hour and 30 minutes. Given all this, the same age demographic who watches media on netflix (or some other streaming service) will be watching for more time uninterrupted and will not resort to channel switching between ads such as one might do on television. The only reason to switch from one show to the next would be if one lost interest or wanted variety in their viewing; this makes shows with a plot line that runs from episode to episode particularly valuable assets to the big streaming companies as they are the type of shows that lend themselves to continuous viewing. Paradise PD and Brickleberry highlight this trend in modern media and are good examples of what it takes to make a successful show in each market.

I am unsure of how it worked with this show, but animated shows typically are green lit for 2 seasons from the get-go since animation takes so long which may explain why despite the falling popularity they were cleared for said second season. Good job with the video came here from the chowder video, good stuff!

Comedy central was not centrally focused on animation when this show was released, thus the green light for a single season and netflix is unique in its continuation of original programming. Tuca and Bertie is a great example of a netflix original animation w/ only 1 season before cancelation.

@@pineist interesting I wasn't aware of that or the situation with Tuca and Bertie. I would have assumed anything similar to Bojack would have been given a resounding thumbs up and green lit for whatever they'd asked for but I suppose that makes more sense financially. It makes me wonder what the situations would be with other upcoming comedy shows.
