Even if the apples weren't picked up from the ground, they're still exposed to many contaminants, both on the tree and in the factory. Like they said, I don't think there's a good way to enforce the rule, and with pickers often paid by the bushel, they're incentivized to get every apple they can.

There are entire communities of people that drink healthy unpasteurized milk/apple juice etc. The issue wasn’t pasteurization, it was the food coming into contact with contaminated fecal material. Anytime health protocols are ignored, no level of safety can stop contaminating your food. What this program does a horrible job of explaining is all the good bacteria, that is killed in the process of pasteurization. Infants/elderly should not eat raw honey 🍯 for the same reasons they should not consumed unpasteurized food. The benefits of persons with healthy immune systems eating unpasteurized food shouldn’t be ignored. It is the reason health problems become a major issue later in people’s life - a lack of basic nutrients from the food they consume. Pasteurization is great for high volume, mass sales and a longer shelf life, the downside is, you are missing the healthy bacteria that helps strengthen your immune system, and provides necessary vitamins. Why drink pasteurized apple juice? Just drink Apple Drink, it is equally less beneficial and has no chance in containing bad bacteria. Bad bacteria is the issue. You can’t pasteurize Yakult, Kimche, or any other fermented foods that societies have used to maintain a healthy society. The elderly and infants have to be taken better care of, and did i mention, don’t feed them honey either. But no reason to shut down all the honey farms.

To provide further explanations on the DNA techniques: Restriction enzymes are like scissors that cut specific sequences of DNA. (They are can be found in certain bacteria like E. Coli). You can load them into a gel (the dye in the mixture can sometimes just be used to visualize the sample being loaded into the gel). The gel could have substances like ethidium bromide mixed in that will bind to the DNA and fluoresce when image. How electrophoresis works that you run the gel in a buffer with a current that pulls the negatively charged DNA down towards the positive end of the current. The DNA will separate base of their size with the smallest fragments moving the fastest.

Decades ago, one of my history professors said that people in a democracy rely upon trust. We trust that laws, regulations, and human morality will provide as much protection as is possible. We trust that a person will not deliberately contaminate foods, add poison to a Tylenol bottle, or carry out other activities that would harm people, and we trust that our governments pass laws, create regulations, and monitor and enforce those laws and regulations so as to keep people as safe as possible. Thus we eat in restaurants, buy foodstuffs, drink tap water, buy manufactured goods, go to work in various occupations, and enjoy our environmental conditions, all the while trusting in their safety. Things are never one hundred percent perfect but we trust that lapses will be infrequent and addressed promptly.

Got ecoli from Taco Bell when I was young. Worst pain of my entire life. It was about 5 days before they realized what I had after they saw it on the news and asked if I had eaten Taco Bell, which I had. Ended up with a weird stomach virus on top of it a few days in and had to be quarantined, they literally came in in hazmat suits and no one could come visit, they could only look at me through the inside glass in my room like an animal at a zoo 😅They gave me so much morphine but I could feel the pain right through it. The dr ended up giving me something stronger so I wasn’t really awake most of the time, he joked to my parents that it’s stronger than what they’d give someone who just had an accidental amputation. They said there was nothing they could do that it just had to pass and one day, about 2 weeks later, I woke up and said im ready to go home 🤷🏽‍♀️ they kept making sure but I somehow knew It was gone. They tried to give me a wheelchair I walked right out of there happy as ever

I'm sure the apple juice company did not send out their products purposely and knowing it was tainted with the bacteria. That would just be stupid and financial suicide for the company. I am also sure they had a policy to not use any apples picked up from the ground. But they did choose not to pasteurize their juice just in case some orchard workers decided to take a shortcut in their job. This was a quality control issue not a deliberate violation of FDA policy to make more money. But...they are ultimately responsible for the quality and safety of their products so they had to pay the price.

Probably the most rational comment on this thread.
