- The Disney Vault was a unique marketing strategy introduced by The Walt Disney Company in the 1980s to create exclusivity and demand for its classic animated films, but its enigmatic origins actually date back all the way to the original theatrical release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Under this system, Disney would release beloved movies such as Snow White, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast on VHS or DVD for a limited time before “locking them away” in the Vault.
Once retired, the films would become unavailable for purchase for several years, driving collectors and fans to act quickly during the release windows. This approach not only made the films highly sought after but also preserved their cultural significance by ensuring they were seen as premium, rare treasures. The Vault helped solidify Disney’s reputation for timeless storytelling and brilliant marketing. Although the concept officially ended with the launch of Disney+ in 2019, the legacy of the Disney Vault lives on as a pivotal chapter in the company’s history.

I thought it was such a missed opportunity to not call Disney+, the Disney Vault. Think of the cute marketing they could have done about the vault "finally opening"
