    There is one more consideration that should be taken into consideration when choosing a handle. It's true that a round handle might be a bit more comfortable but there is one issue with them. Because they are made, for the most part, of aluminum over time and depending on how often you use them the tightening and loosening of the tip will begin to stretch. This causes the blade to become loose and requires ever increasing pressure to lock the blade in place. As you can imagine the more you tighten it the more it stretches and loosens.
    I have tried many different brands over the years and they have all eventually become unusable. To counter this I always have a traditional surgeons scalpel holder on hand as a back up. It's also possible to get one with a thick coating of plastic which provides a good balance between comfort and longevity.

      diGritz1 good point - I'd agree that this is certainly true for the most part... however I have been using an "Excel" branded one for over 20 years and it's perfect. might be a case of 'they don't make them like that anymore'!

    Thank you for this clip ! I hope I can get some need some assistance from you. I into leather craft, and heard scalpel knives are very useful, how ever the seller gave me a scalpel handle no 3 along with a number 24 blade, and I just cannot seem to slide it thru. I think the seller either gave me the wrong handle or the wrong blade. I would like your advice as to what number blade would be suitable for cutting 2 mil leather? What is your suggestion on both handle and blade for leather craft? Much appreciate a response and thank you in advance 🙏🏼

      Yeah - you'd need a #4 handle I believe.
      I expect this advice is a bit late, (sorry), but check this out: www.judepullen.com/designmodelling/scalpels-vs-knives/
      Simple rule: Straight lines, straight blade. Curved Lines, curved blade. So depends what cuts you want to do. But for leather, use small-ish blades. a 15 Swann and Morton might be ideal for you.

    Are the x acto z series blades better than the normal one you used in the video?

    • @JudePullen
      @JudePullen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chocolate Whale have not used those. All I can say is that for beginners thicker blades are best like x acto , and thinner a scalpel blades are when you have more experience. Hope that helps.

    thank you. useful information. maybe buy a cheap scalpel knife to cut bread dough. this is called Lame (in french) . in bread baking world, people are fussy about this tiny thing. a fancy lame is more expensive than a cheap scalpel knife.

      Tirth Bhuta I have both of them. I use them when i certain materials. Sometimes the scalpel is better and sometimes the knife is better
