    One of my favorite Oakland Raiders' stories is when John Matusak was traded from the Houston Oilers to the Raiders and when he showed up at the practice field, Al Davis was standing next to Ted Hendricks and when Matusak came onto the field wearing a WW1 German spiked helmet, Davis said to Hendricks, "I don't know about John". Hendricks responded, "Al do really think one more is going to make any difference!?". LOL!! Hendricks meant by that that having one more nut job on the team wasn't going to hurt the team at all!

      I was right there with you growing up in the bay, East Bay more specifically, those were great times. When Oakland teams were great, when we had huge world-renowned rock concerts at the Oakland Coliseum, known as "Day on the Green". Bill King was the first broadcaster I ever remember listening to. Games when I was 10 listening to him either 1967 or 1968 doing Raider games. I thought I was gonna have a heart attack at 10 years old...He made them so exciting! He was amazing they were amazing. What a shame Oakland did such a poor job in supporting those teams. Still remember when Bill passed I was listening to sports radio when it was announced by Rick Barry of all people former Warrior great, ah, the good old days.

    Stabler's 30-yard scramble in the 4th quarter of the Immaculate Reception game against the Steelers in 1972 seen at the 5:00 mark is one of my all-time favorite highlights and one of Bill King's best ever calls. Both are gone now but that memory will live forever. I remember that play vividly as a 11-year old diehard Raiders fan.

      I liked that '74 Miami at Oakland playoff because I wasn't even an Oakland fan until that final drive had me standing out of my chair in somebody else's living room. By the 24 seconds left in the game time Kenny flipped that crazy desperate thing to Clarence Davis I was a fan. Hell I lived in Texas then and I was a fan. Great team all around, QB, receivers, coach, offensive blocking, secondaries . . . both those two should be in the AFL/NFL hall btw. What the hell bad man Butkus attempted murder in nearly every play and he gets to coast right in but they don't ? !! I can't remember any better secondary.

Whenever they were on television, we'd turn the sound down completely, and turn on the radio and listen to Mr. Bill King call the game. Didn't care about the audio delay, we wanted to hear Bill King yell ; " TOUCHDOWN RAIDERS !!! HOLY TOLEDO !!! "
    To this day, I'll watch ' The Sea of Hands ' on YT, and hear Mr. King's voice !! I still get chill, and fired up regardless !!

      I had the misfortune of growing up 20 miles north of Miami and I was a Raiders fan and that fact didn't sit well with my neighbors, classmates and one teacher in particular, my 4th grade reading teacher who was as overly obnoxious and not too bright when it came to football, blindly believing the Dolphins were ahead in the series of games played against each other which at the time they were not. On one winter morning I proudly wore my Oakland Raiders sweatshirt to school and my teacher commented, " What's with you and Oakland, do you have family there or something "? I answered, " Yes, Raiders fans ARE family to me ".

    Growing up third generation Oakland, about a week before my sixth birthday I went to my first A's game in 1972 and was hooked. We won the World Series that year and the same in '73 & '74. 1975 the Warriors swept the Bullets to win the NBA title (I watched on tape delay at 11:30pm. Out west they didn't show the NBA live back then) The '76 the Raiders won it all (1/9/77) as shown here. We were the 'City of Champions' and I thought I lived in the greatest city ever, HOLY TOLEDO! Bill King at one time or another was the voice of all three. The BEST!

    There are certain teams that I respect even though at times, I hope for them to lose when my team plays them. The Raiders were always one. They were so good, so consistent, so full of character that you had to have a small part of you. The Raiders had EVERYTHING! Including one of the best play by play men of All Time Bill King! We had Chuck Thompson here in Baltimore and their styles were different, the quality was the same. The Baltimore Colts were great and very good for a period in the 70's, but the Raiders didn't fall off until the late 80's. A period of sustained excellence. They broke a lit of teams and cities hearts, but they got their hearts broken in some if the most excruciating ways. They earned their own "Nation" and still have some players from that era that have not been bestowed the highest honor and its so wrong. We know who they are, and one in particular they waited until he was gone to put him in. Anyway...I'm not a Raider fan per say, but...I've long admired their aura, mystique, and overall winning football philosophy. The era I grew up watching (the 70's) couldn't be written without the Oakland Raiders. What a time in Oakland back then. We had similar times in Baltimore when the Colts and Orioles had it cookin'. A's vs Birds was a major rivalry and of course under publicized. Yeah...I have love for Oakland and their teams. I don't get mad if and when they beat us, because we had so much in common. Hard working, blue collar towns back then, that lived and loved our teams. We weren't New York, or San Francisco, and proud of it.
    Loved the video! Love Bill King! I should do one featuring Chuck Thompson. He was class and knrw how to bring your emotions out. I miss him.

      @johnmongani5223  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      well said and thanks for the awesome comment. I grew up near Oakland and lived it all during the 70's. My 4th grade teacher brought a TV into our classroom so us students could watch the Orioles A's playoffs in 1971 that the O's won. Better times came for the A's soon after that, some at the expense of your team which was starting to be past their prime. I'm actually not a fan of the "Raider Nation" phrase which reminds me of the Dallas Cowboy's "America's Team" of the 70's. But that's what AL Davis wanted when he moved the team to the large market of Los Angeles, national and world recognition. In the 70's, the Raiders were hated by everyone and their motto was "Us against the World". We in the East Bay of the Bay Area had them all to ourselves and we lived our lives like they played and won football games. It was a magical time to be in the Bay Area with the Raiders and A's dynasty along with a Warrior title thrown in there over the Bullets. Raiders Colts 1977 playoff was one of the best games in NFL history, barely won by the veteran Raiders team over that young Colt team.

    WOW, a treasure to watch, this is!!!.....I'm a 44~year Seahawks fan, growing up in Oregon, but my most often & earliest memories of Bill King weren't during Raider games, but rather him doing the play~by~play in GS Warrior hoops games we got on cable~TV on KTVU~Ch.2, all the time! He was SUPER calling Al Attles squad night in & night out; we got mostly their road games with him on the call, if memory serves!....Funny thing is, I only first found out about him doing Raiders' radio several years later, when I was able to see/watch the immortal NFL Films edition of Super Bowl XI, which masterfully featured Bill King; I yet recall saying to myself then, "Hey, I knowww that voice!!"! Up to then, I'd only ever seen the Raiders on NBC{99% of games) & so I associated Oakland with Curt Gowdy as much as any other announcer, LOL!.... Even being a fan from a bitter rival team from late '70's through the 90's, I gotta give the Raiders SO much credit & respect~even including their radio guy; Bill King was a truly GREAT, GIFTED Legend & is much missed, by me & other older Seahawks fans, for sure!! I'll always enjoy/savor clips here on TH-cam of his calls against not only my own Seattle Seahawks, but from the '78 "Holly Roller" game AND SB's XV & XVIII, as well ~ R.I.PPPP.+PPPP., Bill!!

    King was great at basketball play-by-play as well. As the voice of the Golden State Warriors, you almost felt like you were on the court sitting next to him. And when the Warriors sucked he would let you know. One night in a very sloppy played game he uttered "Who wrote the script for the Warriors tonight, Laurel and Hardy????" He attacked CBS during a national televised game when the 24 second timers broke down ('Well the 24 second clocks provided by CBS aren't working. Thanks a lot CBS, you messed it up again")

    My favorite Bill King play call in an Oakland Raiders football game was the one he made at the end of a meaningless (for the Raiders) end-of-the -1978 season game against the San Diego Chargers--the famous "Holy Roller" play on which Stabler deliberately flung the ball forward to the ground and FB Pete Banazak as he was being tackled shoved the ball forward along the ground towards the end zone where TE Dave Casper fell on it for the game winning TD! You gotta love it when Bill King said, "Madden wants to know if it's real--the official says yes--now get your big butt outta here!" LOL!!!!

    What a lousy effort by the Rams QB to stop the Raiders LB Phil Villapiano from scoring a TD on that interception! How could he make no effort at all to tackle Villapiano around the legs to prevent him from scoring a TD on that play? He just shoved him with his shoulder trying to knock Viillapiano out-of-bounds on that play!

    What was the NFL thinking from the 1930's--early 1970's when they had the goal posts in the end zone which was dangerous to the players who might accidentally run into the uprights and injure themselves? Finally, later on They put the goal posts where they should be-- just behind the back of the end zone.

    • @johnmongani5223

      oh right, in 74 Raiders led 10-7 going into the 4th quarter and then ran out of gas in the 4th after defeating the two time NFL champs the week before. 75 the game ended with the Raiders just 10 yards away from winning the game. The other 2 Super Bowls had nothing to do with the Raiders who didn't make the playoffs those years so you are a major dope. Nobody liked the Steelers style of play because they were boring as hell with boring players and a grumpy coach. Raiders were more popular even though they won just one Super Bowl after "walking all over the Steelers" 24-7 in the 1976 AFC title game. get lost.
