Sorry but Zayn is NOT dissing One Direction. Please read. (NOT my theory but it has a good message) After thinking about this for a few days I think the song is about 1D but not what most people think. Z loved his 1D boys. This is about his anxiety and intentional isolation. This is about stress of being that big in the industry and not feeling valued by management. When he sings "I'd rather be anywhere, anywhere but here" he's referencing his distress. He wishes he could be like the other boys and embrace the fame of 1D. When he sings, 'I pray to God I didn't waste all my good years" he's meaning I hope I didn't waste that incredible experience with my own issues. When he sings "I close my eyes I can see a crowd of a thousand tears" he's saying when I close my eyes I can see myself touring and my fans being proud of me but.... I now realize singing alone on stage is actually more anxiety-ridden than singing with the 1D boys on stage. At least they had my back. Being a solo artist is satisfying for him because he can express himself but he still has performance anxiety. I believe in this theory because Zayn has dealt with all of this. In 1D and outside of it. Zayn and !d do not hate each other. This song was NOT a diss.
I don’t mind Zayn not being in One Direction but I just want all of them to be friends again, they were so close before and now they act like they’re strangers.... well, we don’t know if they’ve been texting or calling each other but at least give us something that signals that they’re still friends. Or like that they still go and hang out together and catch up, just.... ugh I don’t know.......

Ok my opinion on the song: “I’d rather be anywhere, anywhere but here” ... “I pray to god I didn’t waste all my good years.” I think this is Zayn saying he wants the salt between him and the other boys to end, he doesn’t want to regret any of their memories together. “A crowd of a thousand tears” This is probably referring to the fans getting upset over the fights and shade they kept throwing. “Too much drugs and alcohol, what the hell were we fighting for?” This is probably cause the fights they did have we kinda stupid like the zouis Twitter fight. I really think people are looking at the song wrong. Zayn isn’t throwing shade, he’s ending it.
