A mum-of-five who can't have more children has spent thousands turning her house into a nursery for 50 fake babies. Maternal Alice Winstone, 39, feeds, changes, washes, sleeps with and clothes her jumbo brood which has even forced her husband to move out. Alice, who suffers from a life-threatening anaemic condition, can't work but spends 24/7 caring for her fake family. Her babies - named Reborn Dolls - are made from a spookily life-like vinyl material and can cost up to £1,200 each. Alice's obsession gets her noticed in the street as she takes the babies shopping in prams and straps them in baby seats in her car. She even takes her favourite to the ZOO and buys 'him' expensive UGG baby boots and was once stopped by the police for having four of the life-like dolls on her back seat of her car. A medical problem meaning she could have no more children made Alice crave nurturing but kittens and fostering was not enough because she had to say goodbye. In seven years, Alice, from Cardigan, Mid Wales, has filled her family home with dolls despite the fact some of her children, aged 12 to 22 still live there.
Alice said: "I saw my first doll, who was called Emily, on the back of a magazine and I fell head-over-heels in love with her. "My husband Chris took some convincing to let me have her but eventually I ordered her, and paid £180 for her. I was astonished to feel such a close bond to a doll." Alice was told if she had more children after her fifth that her pregnancy and delivery could be unsafe due to her having pernicious anaemia and a red blood cell deficiency that causes blood loss as it does not clot. She even has to have a contraceptive 'depo' injection every 12 weeks so that she doesn't bleed to death from having a period. As a born mother, Alice felt a loss once her children became more independent and she longed for something she could care for. Alice said: "I tried taking in kittens, and even fostering children but I couldn't bear the part where I had to say goodbye. "I began looking after the dolls like I would my own babies - they are so life-like and I feel such a close bond to them. "It's the best of both worlds as well - I get to dress them up, do their hair and wash their clothes without the endless dirty nappies and sleepless nights!" Since then, Alice has bought more than 50 of the dolls - who are each looked after in the same impeccable way.
But, while Alice enjoyed being a full-time mother, her relationship with Chris began to suffer. Alice said: "Chris didn't understand why I treated my dolls like real babies - he just didn't get it. "I tried telling him how happy they make me but he just thought it was a stupid obsession. "They soon started to affect our sex life as I would want some of them to come to bed with us, but Chris refused. "We were arguing about other things in our relationship, but the dolls really didn't help - he said they freaked him out because they looked so real." Alice became very protective over her dolls and worried about her children being near them, or the cat sitting on them if she wasn't around to keep an eye on them. She moved the dolls to her bedroom, and bought cots for them to sleep in.
Eventually Chris moved out as he couldn't cope with Alice's love for the dolls any longer. Alice said: "I wouldn't have given up my dolls for Chris - we come as a package. "I like them close to me, and I'm never far away from them for long. "After Chris left, I down-sized my double bed to a single and turned our room into a nursery. I didn't need the extra space and it meant there was more room for my dolls and their stuff." Alice has all of the equipment you would expect to look after real-life babies with, including cots, prams, baby bouncers and hundreds of tiny outfits. She said: "I've spent thousands on my dolls - but I also go to doll fairs and swap them for others when I've had them a while. "Rhys is my favourite, I like him to sleep with me every night. "I recently took him to Chester Zoo - loads of people came up to me and told me how cute he is, and they couldn't believe it when I told them he was a reborn doll and not a baby. "I buy him Next clothes and UGG boots as I want him to look nice."

I was just about to say, some homes give baby dolls to elderly who have dementia or other certain issues, as they think the dolls are real and they take care of them like real babies. It's good for them.
Sharlee Coulton I just watched a documentary about that. An old lady who got better from her dementia by having a pretend baby to take care of. That's great.
I am a guy and I have a reborn of my own. He makes me happy and calm. I love taking him out and buying clothes for him.

I do not think she is crazy or weird!!! And her story is NOT horrifying at all! she is NOT hurting anyone and I think she is 100% normal reason being because she knows and even admits that the dolls are fake and that she loves them so much because they give her happiness:) Which if you ask me is no different then somebody having a hobby collecting stamps for example :)

I collect both reborns and porcelain dolls haha. I had 106 porcelain dolls originally but I had to downsize for when I move house, now I've got about 40-odd! I only have 4 reborns. :)

This makes sense to me, babies faces make people ( women especially ) leak oxytocin, the love chemical. She is addicted to the cute.... animals do this to us as well, which is why the internet is all about cats too. Big eyes little noses, we cant help it it is in our genes to.

I cannot believe how mean some people are and how downright spiteful some of the comments are that have been left. This lady is not doing anything wrong, she is not hurting anyone and she is fully aware that these are reborn dolls, as she says she has had children of her own and fosters other children, this is not about her wanting another baby, a great deal of people collect things, just because this happens to be reborn dolls, does not make it weird or anything else, this lady seems really nice, I would much rather have her as a friend, than some of the people on her, who have made really nasty comments

It's the best kind of baby you can get, it doesn't scream in the middle of the night, or day for that matter. No crappy diapers, no throw up. Ya~~~
They now has one that makes an explosive poopy diaper (on one of the other vids here). It's fake poo, but the lady doing her vids acts too much like her dolls are real (for me to watch)! She feeds them, puts them into their baby gym, acts like they are alive on do msny levels, and on and on... She may know they're just dolls, but sure doesn't act like it. I forget the name of the one who does those, but she has a video on "big poopy" diaper here on You tube.

When I was younger I had about 50 Breyer model horses and was obsessed with them. I had a huge barn for them where I kept their tack and blankets, food, vet supplies, and other things. Each horse had its own name and some even had backstories. I also had riders who only rode specific ones and did certain disciplines. I would even take them out of the house with me, so I don't see how this is any different than that.
I think the difference is that you are not still carrying that hobby on as an adult.. btw I too had a breyer horse addiction!

Some do laugh or cry. Some reborn parents have apps as well that cry at random times.
Obviously this satisfies a very primal maternal need within her, the same effect is brought about when you give a baby doll to elderly dementia patients, it simply sates a deep need to nurture, its calming and relaxing. I think its beautiful.

it made sense when she said they're used for people with depression or anxiety because people have noticed that alzheimer's patients feel and do much better when they're given a baby doll to take care of. it helps them feel useful and loved.

when I first came across these things, I was horrified. One because they looked so very life-like and two because I really thought these people were crazy cakes!! A few short months later I have my first girl reborn doll and I just ordered my first boy! I can't have children of my own due to cancer but these babies have made me happy, whether or not my adoption attempts go through or pan out!
I have 2, and I love them. When I'm feeling sad and alone I cuddle them.
i would love to have a reborn of each of my kids. if they decide to have kids i can say "this is what X looked like when she was a baby!" and it would be a neat way to use their first outfits (i saved the first outfits each of them wore). i don't think i'd bring this doll around as if it was a live human though. we've got enough real humans, cats, and dogs in this house i don't see any need for it. besides, the school a block away has "baby think it over" dolls for when people want to learn about actually taking care of a baby (they are computerized, they cry and scream and laugh, and they indicate when they need feeding and diaper change and whether the poor student accidentally kills it by dropping it, which has happened, and my mom was the teacher. a student called saying her baby had died and my dad thought it was a real baby not a school baby - insert awkwardness here).

If you are willing to pay more and find an artist that does "One of a Kind" reborns, you can take old pics, of your baby, and get a reborn that looks close to what your baby did. As for the school babies, I had a class in high school that required you to take care of one for a day or weekend (depending on the day of the week it was your turn) I had one over the weekend and appearently took acceptable care of it since I passed the class. But that was more than 20 yrs ago, I'm sure they are much more advanced these days and it should be a class all teens should take.
My friend had one of those dolls in school. My mom even babysat for her.
I couldn't stand them. I'd have probably shoved it into the back of the couch or something.
On the other hand I adore babies and my niece pretty much lived in my arms whenever we babysat.
The worse thing was the tilt feature. If you actually held the doll like a normal baby it would scream bloody murder. I much prefer a real baby.

I'm 11 almost 12 and I have a reborn. They actually can help kids learn to take care of kids. Before I had him I didn't even know how to hold a baby, now I know how to, and how to dress babies, change diapers and how to feed a real baby. They can also teach kids to get used to the real weight off a real child (they are weighted like a real baby or toddler) not to mention how fun it is to buy baby clothes XD

I have always loved babies. I have 3 children of my own...Grown now & made me a nanny. But i still love babies...3 real ones was enough for me...Health wise,Financial wise,Space & time wise. I just love going to baby shops & seing all of the beautiful things for them. So i have a reborn baby & i love her loads. This is very calming and soothing. She is a caring woman. Love her. She’s right, it makes you happy holding a baby. I think it would help eldery people as well. She’s reliving the best part as a mom. Surrounded by cute clothes, toys and cuddling a baby. Good for her.

There are not millions of others who do the same. Sure, there may be millions who own a similar doll, but there is probably no-one with this much love for them and who owns this many. Hence why she is the subject of a documentary film.

I don't know why some people make negative comments regarding these dolls that are really collector's items. I've been reborning babies for over nine years and not only do I love to see them transform into a real looking babies, the very act of rebornng them is very relaxing. The more "real" they look, the more they cost. They take many hours to make especially the hair rooting. I love how you have all their clothes, shoes and other baby items all neatly displayed as well as the babies themselves.
I just recently got into reborn babies a couple weeks ago and made my first one. As someone that has suffered a miscarriage and also has 3 happy healthy kids now, I completely agree with what this woman says! Women have a natural “nurturing” ability about us and when I made my first reborn and held her it made me so happy as a real baby would because it’s a woman’s natural instinct... no I’m not crazy and no I’m not on crazy pills. What she said at the end of this video, hits the nail right on the head!

I don't think she's crazy. Her kids are all grown and she can't have anymore children and these babies keep her company. It's not a very good habit to be emotionally attached to them but at least they make her happy.

Two decades ago, when I still played with dolls, my little sister, my friend, and I were playing house. My friend told my sister she held the baby wrong so my little sister who was probably about 5, being the awesome person she always was screamed "it isn't a real baby" as she threw it against the wall...then she said "see, she is still sleeping!" and walked and stormed out. I think this is a lesson some of these reborn fanatics could learn ;)

Alyssa Tyson you shouldn't handle those dolls like that. The reason they are supposed to be held right is not because it will wake up but those babies are expensive and can break.....you have to treat them with care. Think of it as holding a piece of artwork, that's the way I see it.

In all honesty, if the baby dolls were standing a the foot of the bed, each one is probably not much taller than 23 inches at the most. Unless the mattress was on the floor, you'd probably just look right over their little sparse heads.

That is one of my reasons I collect baby dolls. Was never able to have my own child. Matter of fact, I sometimes hold them and sleep holding a baby doll. It is comforting.

This is actually really sweet. Compared to all the other "addictions", this is the nicest and most adorable one. She's clearly normal, I guess you could call what she's doing a "hobby". Like miniature scale dollhouses (which I'm infatuated with), for example.

She’s a kind soul . I bought a couple of reborn in the past and helped me going through a difficult time . I have a young son of my own and no longer feel like having these reborns . However they can be beneficial for kind hearted people going through a hard time
I'm seventeen and I have one of these dolls, it's a boy and honestly for me it's a therapy doll. I suffer from major depression, anxiety and PTSD from childhood trauma and he gives me comfort. Alot of people don't understand, but they can really help somone.

Amen sister I have just got my first reborn and I love her so much I just lost my sister or 45 to cancer and it's been very hard but once you pick up a reborn the pain goes away thank you for sharing your story happy reborning
Dear Alice, I've been so inspired by people like you, and others who gain some very real healing aspects of utilizing these dolls from anything like in therapy sessions, to at birth infant loss and a time to share about dreams, to a time to wait, or a place to enjoy a hobby... all are healthy, they lower blood pressures, lower heart rates, stress reductions come in all forms. So, I now am becoming a reborn artist myself as I also, truly believe in the benefit of realism in dolls for the benefits they bring to the user.

I think it's precious and the woman isn't insane for having a passion
I think this is lovely. Having your children grow up is hard and it's great she has these reborns to occupy her. I collect them myself, they sit on a shelf and I occasionally hold them and change their clothes but I don't go all out. I think when my kids are older and independent I will be glad to have something resembling a baby to snuggle. I think her husband was a little mean, I can understand not wanting them in the bed particularly during sex but he should have understood that she was doing what makes her happy. My husband enjoys holding the reborns himself as we have one made to look like our stillborn son and he has a connection with that doll. I think it's great this woman has a hobby that she loves and invests time on, having hobbies is healthy and fun :)

Women like her have a lot of love to give. I love babies myself. The day my kids grow up I would feel a empty void. It is some sort of need. I can understand her and this video is helpful. I like it who knows I'll get one myself. As long we are happy and no one else is hurting by it.
u just expressed how I feel. I have passion for babies , and my kids r teens now. I always recall the days when they were infants. I really miss those days.
I think this is absolutely fantastic. I have depression anxiety mental health problems and I've got three reborns and they really help me I take them out cuddling and I think she's done a fantastic job I change my babies every day too. Xx

I would have said it's because she can't have children of her own but she has a daughter so I just can't explain this. Maybe she just really liked dolls as a kid. Maybe she just likes having children but with none of the responsibility.
She actually has 5 kids. According to the description, she tried taking care of kittens and foster kids. It didn't work because of how much she hates saying goodbye. She said herself, that babies are to help her with her depression. You can read the description if you want more info 😊

Well they both can of course still play with children's toys if they want to. Socially speaking though it's seen as a bit weird for either of those things to happen, man or woman, trains or dolls.

I honestly think its a subconscious way of her reaction to not being able have anymore babies. Like maybe she doesn't realize it but her heart and body is aching that she can never have another infant to dress and hold. I have no problem with this though. If it makes her happy and her family is okay with it then its fine. As long as the family that's actually living is being taken care of as well.

I suffer from anxiety and depression and I recently stumbled upon a picture of a very cute baby girl. I used it as my home screen. What this woman is saying is true. It has helped me cope and it gives me a new outlook on life. I just ask myself what that beautiful baby girl is thinking and what she would think if she were me. I have no desire to have a baby of my own and I am childless which is difficult to explain to people who see my home screen on my phone.
