GRIMDARK WHITE SCARS! How I paint Grimdark White Space Marine Armour

  • Today it's the turn of the White Scars to get the Grimdark treatment! In this video I show my method for painting some nice grim and gritty white armour, no brilliant bright whites here!
    White armour is definitely one of the toughest things to paint in the grimdark style but with the right techniques you can definitely capture that Grimdark feel.

    That was great! I'm chasing a scheme to paint that Indomitus boxset... And I thought I had it down to a grimdark red... But now I need another test following this recipe! Got my Grime ready!
    I need to suggest you AK's Track Wash color... Basically reddish Grime for all grimdark needs. Over zenithal white it's a perfect foundation for anything NMM, parchment or... Anything, almost... And it's an oil wash already, so you would generally only swap away the very top highlight if anything.

    • @SprayBlackStudios
      @SprayBlackStudios  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well it never hurts to do a few test schemes!

      @@SprayBlackStudios I'm testing your scheme (with some variation) on five terminators right now!
      Tried some blue, black, red and now this... Sooo... Yeah...
      My initial wash was likely not thinned enough and the acrilic under was showing sign of distress before I could ever turn that bright back up again, so I went back with a glaced offwhite highlight (trying a directional lighting I have set with well lit pictures) ... Happy so far! I think this might be a winner, but it's soon to tell! I'll upload a short video on my youtube account... Would love to get any feedback from you!

    Love the tutorial but I've always wondered: when it comes to the oil washes, how long do you let them sit on the model before you rub them off with a q-tip and white spirits? Do you let them fully dry? I've played around with oil washes a bit and I find that they come off super easy even after waiting like 20-30 minutes, and I accidentally grab them out of the recesses :\

    • @SprayBlackStudios
      @SprayBlackStudios  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Normally I tend to leave them about the time you have mentioned and sometimes I'll use a hairdryer just to flash off the excess white spirit.
      I'd say if you are bringing it up too much then you are possibly either making them too thin or applying too much white spirit when removing them. The removal should be done fairly slowly so take your time 👍
