It’s always what could have been with Ashton, unfortunately. He could have easily been one of Englands great strikers, career cut short too soon!

Deano was my hero watching West Ham at the Boleyn growing up. Can't believe they've not got arguably his greatest ever goal, 10 years after retirement. That Overhead kick in the Mark Noble Testimonial.

I feel so sorry for this man, if he didn't have that injury I think he definitely would have been a West Ham legend by now, scored 100+ goals for us and probably led us to a trophy of some sort but nevertheless he was still an amazing player and one that I'll never forget

I agree but I also think he’d of gone to man United

Deano is one of the nicest guys you can meet. I had the pleasure of playing with him at Upton Park in a private event. Should have lead the line for West Ham and England for many years. Also - I can't believe you haven't included the goal in the Mark Noble testimonial.

Wonderful player. So sad he got injured. Without doubt one of the best forwards we ever bought to the club. All the best Deano!

I mever supported a club Ashton played for but alqays loved watching him play. He was a fantastic finisher of the ball just a complete natural. Iwas genuinely gutted for him when he was forced to retire because he really was a great striker and deserved a longer career. Seen a recent interview and he seems to be doin ok which is great to see. After what he went through he could be forgiven for being down and depressed tbh so its testament to his character and strength as a man.

Dean Ashton is my all time favourite West Ham player, been a fan of the club since I can remember and this man was 100% the reason for that.

Deano and Bellamy up front was an amazing combo. Due to injury they never really got to play together. Watched them both and BOTH were a class act.

I have to echo the other comments. I was at that Middlesbrough game where he scored a bullet; brings back so many good personal memories. Parker scored in injury time to win it for us as well.
As a pure finisher, he’s probably the best I’ve seen at West Ham so far, apart from maybe Defoe or Cottee. Hart son was also good and a similar player. Apart from pace, Deano had the lot- strong, powerful, good header, good feet, great finisher, was good at holding up the ball and flicking it on too. If it wasn’t for injuries he would’ve gone on to be an England regular and probably would’ve been signed by one of the top clubs for big money.

A great striker who scored some really well taken goals. A big shame about that injury. I enjoy the banter on EFL show with Colin,Ian etc.
Well done dean, from a stags fan. 👍

People would have been shocked st what he would have achieved. I told everyone, even as man utd fan he was a better player than Rooney. I know fergie was a massive fan. He had Berbtovs touch and finishing with 10 times his football brain and shearers heading ability. Everytime i watched him I was amazed at how good he was techically

  • @hugoleesong
    @hugoleesong 3 ปีที่แล้ว

What a first touch he had.
Very underrated technically. Big man that he could flick on and hold up the ball. But also brilliant with the ball at his feet.

I remember the transfer window Everton signed James Beattie. January 2005. Beattie was not the Beattie of 2003 and was actually in poor form and overweight. I remember thinking why haven't we gone for Dean Ashton who was smashing it for Crewe. Cahill had signed from The Championship and was our best player so surely Moyes knew about Ashton? Sure enough Ashton signs for Norwich for half the fee Beattie signs for and does really well except Norwich get relegated. Mark my words if Dean Ashton had never gotten that injury then he'd be up there in terms of goals scored in the PL. He really was that good.

I was at WBA away that day, I didnt realise that was your last game, gutted for him and the club as its rare West Ham get hold of real quality players. I am sure he has gotten down about it but at least he had some glory and some career,I would be so proud if I had played half the time Dean Ashton played.

I often thought he was carrying a bit too much weight, and wonder whether he would have lasted as a front line striker in today's high-speed Premier League. However he had a lot of skill, a great shot with either foot and a quick footballing brain, so he may have been very effective as an attacking midfielder in the Teddy Sheringham mould.
