Tom Selleck is Magnum always and forever
It is mentioned on the show a couple of times that Higgins is a former British Army Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) who served in the West Yorkshire Regiment (West Yorkshire being a county in Northern England). As a boy watching the show in the 80s, this really grabbed my attention as that is where I lived. Years later I discovered that Tom Selleck's family on his mother's side all came from West and South Yorkshire, leading me to believe that detail of Higgins' background was created at the request of Tom to honor his family's heritage.

I was obsessed with Magnum P.I. when I was a teen, back in the 80's. I watched reruns over and over in the 90's. The new one isn't too bad either; the comrade is nice. I was lucky enough to work on set with Mr Selleck when I lived in Japan and he was filming Mr. Baseball. It was super fun!
Tom Selleck is Magnum. The original one and forever
CHiPs was the first mainstream tv show to portray a former military member in a positive light. Larry Wilcox’s (a former Marine Vietnam veteran himself) Jon Baker was regularly mentioned on the show as a Vietnam War veteran years before Magnum P.I. began being broadcast.
After the fact, I do not think Tom Selleck had a choice but to turn down Indiana Jones since his contract with Magnum allowed no wiggle room for scheduling both projects.
Magnum PI was a long running classic that ran for pretty much the entire 1980’s with Tom Selleck still being the definitive Thomas Magnum. I’d seen on the DVD BTS how John Hillerman who played a Brit on the show actually being a Texan in real life. In fact there have been various other episodes where Hillerman has played doppelgängers from areas other than Higgins Brit. I did not know about the Quantum Leap Crossover with Magnum PI. This show was one of those rare instances where it went out on a high. 10:30

I had to watch this because I really used to like Magnum p.i. show and I love that car and always pictured myself having one someday. Magnum was like the cool older brother I always got the best chicks that you always wanted to be like. 😆
Scott Bakula's character on Quantum P. I. was Dr. Sam Beckett, not Thomas.
There's only 1 magnum PI, the reboot isn't very good
True. Like the reworked MacGyver, the revamped Magnum P. I. will never come close to matching the original.
Woke magnum
Don Bellisario's character on Airwolf, Stringfellow Hawke, was also a Viet Nam vet; ditto Col. John Hannibal Smith and the members of The A-Team, MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson's version), and Michael Knight.
In regards to the James Bond approach, The Six Million Dollar Man's Col. Steve Austin was meant to have a 007 angle, which Lee Majors also disliked.
Didn't know about the Tom Clancy connection. Ironically, and while Clancy is one of my fave authors, I despise the way Clancy puts down both Ian Fleming and James Bond, even describing the former in the novel Red Rabbit as a 'failed Brit spook', though Mr. Fleming served as Personal Assistant to Adm. Sir John Godfrey who was Head of Naval Intelligence during the early years of World War II . Mr. Fleming created the 30 Assault Group which gathered intelligence from German bunkers prior to an actual invasion.
Also, like 007, Clancy's own John Clark was an agent with license to kill; and as with James Bond, Jack Ryan oft ate scrambled eggs with bacon and coffee.
Also, *80s cop show Miami Vice's detective James "Sonny" Crocket (played by Don Johnson) was a Vietnam vet. They did an episode about a commanding officer who was smuggling heroin in the dead bodies of American Soldiers being shipped back home. I believe the episode is called "Back in the World" Season 2

I still watch old Magnum Pi original 1980-1988 and now new Blue Bloods Tom Selleck both great tv shows never be forgotten is best in my book.
The intro music of this show alone will make you grow an epic mustache.

Turns out that there was a strike during the time Magnum, P.I. was filming its first season, so Tom Selleck could have taken the role of Indiana Jones. Imagine how history would have changed if he had done Raiders of the Los Ark instead of Harrison Ford.

I didn't like the reboot. The dynamic was too much like a Saturday morning cartoon.
To be honest it is one of the few shows that makes me smile, i get that though, it is light. I do like the nods to the old show.
That’s not true Magnum never met Robyn. In the episode (can’t remember the name) where a woman is threatening to kill Robyn, Magnum stops her and takes away the gun. Robyn is in the room with the both of them.
You knew the new one wouldn’t take off when they made Higgins a beautiful young woman/love interest. Why fuck with the Magnum/Higgins dynamic like that?! It should have been Clayne Crawford as Magnum, and Tom Lennon as Higgins. Boom!

Actually I think Selleck asked for Magnum to be less of a James Bond character and more an everyman, Ford also asked that Indiana be more of an everyman so I think they might have both played Indiana the same.
