    Just installed a new freewheel on my cruiser. Cutting the old one off is the only way to go. Vice grips didn't even work to remove the last bit. I had to put it in my bench vice and clamp it down HARD. Thanks for the video!

    You guys are very smart fellas. I've never completed any job like this is my life...lol...I'm wondering if some day I could buy a set up like this from the bike store...lol
    I just bought a Himiway Zebra. It has 26 miles on it. Love this bike, even to look at it I find joy. In my childhood days there were no bikes like this that I knew about.
    After putting my Himiway together I named it Frankenstein because sitting on it it seemed to look and feel like a beast. Oh! I call it "Franky for short".
    Here in the northeast, we don't have many months of bike riding weather. That my only tiny problem with this bike. Otherwise I'm a happy guy. Thing is scary some times. It will take off without me if I'm not paying attention....lol...I rode bike in the streets of sunny south Ft Lauderdale until I became a teenager, and now I find myself learning to ride ebikes all over again...lol
    It's a blast!!!!

    I have a Himiway step-thru Zebra and I am so glad I did not get the Cruiser because the upgrades on the Zebra are huge for the little bit of money you pay more for it and this video shows one of the major upgrades On the Zebra, I have that same tool for e-bikes freewheel and it worked great on my old e-bike and to see it would not work on the Cruiser sucks, but on the new Zebra the upgraded motor runs cooler and is more powerful plus they redesigned it to be much easier to work on as the motor comes apart on the disc brake side and the wires come out that side to between the hub and the frame which is a much better design and both nuts are 18mm so that tool works great because I changed the freewheel on my Zebra to an 11t-28t freewheel which is a five-star upgrade for me because they only allow you to unlock the Zebra to do 25 mph with the stock display and I rarely go faster than 22 mph because I am an old guy with a bad knee and that's why I got the step-thru, But they do sale a color display that will let you unlock the speed like on the Cruiser and if I do decide to get it then I will put on a bigger front sprocket on, but I have 1000 mi. on my Zebra so I also wanted to take apart the hub on the Zebra and that was easier to do too because the screw heads were 4mm and it came apart easy and I put a much better grease on the gears Lucas Red N tackey #2 that is a lithium based grease that is safe for the nylon gears also they claim the Zebra is 98% more reliable but time will tell but I have not heard of anybody welding their hub motor wire connector together like you see a lot of cruiser do, I see a lot of people working on their Cruiser with their wires still connected that would suck but I was just about to buy a Cruiser and they just came out with the Zebra and it was worth the wait for it.

    G'day again Stan. I've done the mods as you have. I couldn't put the new 52T chainring on the inside of the bracket like the stock 46T because the teeth on it hit the frame, but no surprise there, so I put it on the outside of the bracket without the guard, since the guard is now too small to provide any real protection anyway. But with the 52T chainring I can only go to the 6th largest gear on the freewheel. The rear rerailleur is streteched out to it's maximum and there isn't enough slack in the chain to allow the chain to go to the 34T largest and lowest gear. It's not possible. You replied to me before that you re-used the stock chain and all worked OK. Next I tried a 50T chainring, mounting it also on the outside of the bracket. Even with the 50T chainring it also binds up some and does not shift reliably and safely to the 34T largest gear on the freewheel, so I don't want to run it that way and maybe break something or cause a lockup. Also with the chainring on the outside of the crank bracket the angle of the chain is quite a bit out of alignment. My Cruiser is a '21. I don't know if your bike is an earlier model and maybe there's slight differences in the frame specs or something, because the way it is now at leat for me is that the 52T chainring cannot work reliably and safely, especially trying to reuse the stock chain.

      Hi Ozzie, I am having the same issue with the 52 tooth chainring. The chain will no go onto the low gear sprocket. I'm thinking about putting some new links in the stock chain to see if that cures the problem. Have you found anything that worked? Regards, Fred My bike is a 2021 model as well.

      @@golf4life357 I know that and I even asked Stan how much longer he had to make his chain. He said the stock chain was fine, which I found strange. And of course it was too short. No matter anyway because with the 52T chainring I didn't like the extreme chainline anyway. On a Himiway Cruiser the largest chainring that can be run in place of the stock 46T is a 48T so it will not hit the frame. So now I have the 11 x 34 freewheel and a 48T chainring, and the stock chain works fine. I can get a top speed of 35 mph and now instead of ghost pedaling, at 35 mph I'm pushing against the motor. So with the stock 750W motor and stock controller, it looks to me that unless more mods (more powerful motor and controller), 35 mph more or less, is the best a guy is gonna get.

    While Stan did a great job of explaining how he removed the freewheel without using a freewheel removal tool there is a much simpler way to do it. If you notice there are two holes in the freewheel near the axle. You can use a small drift or punch type tool and a hammer to tap the freewheel loose from its mount to the motor hub. Tap in counter clockwise direction. Watch the short video from Haidong in China the factory that makes bikes for several direct to consumer E-bike retailers including Himiway and RAD.

    • @ozzie444
      @ozzie444 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I did. Same as the Haidong YT video. No destruction of parts. I still don't know about the 52T chainring cuz when I tried to mount it inside the crank bracket like the stock 46T, it hit the frame on my Himiway Cruiser. Stan said he didn't have that problem but anywhere I've read they all say it hits the frame when you try to mount it the same as the stock chainring. I didn't like the severe angle of the chain either with the 52T on the outside of the crank bracket. And Stan said he didn't need to extend the chain either using the 11 x 34 freewheel with the 52T but I couldn't get up onto the lowest gear sprocket (largest one, the 34T) with the stock chain. A 50T chainring hits the frame also if you try to mount it like the stock 46T. I might try a 48T. It might be able to mount properly. Anyway I'm still working on this. No rush.

      Using an $8 freewheel removal tool is much quicker and doesn't destroy the OEM freewheel. You may want to use it again. At any rate, using an abrasive wheel to cut anything off a threaded collar is risky at best. I guarantee that most anyone trying this method will cut into the treads - not good. Spend the $8 on Amazon, get it done much quicker and have the tool and the old freewheel for future use.

    • @ozzie444
      @ozzie444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@billdickinson6021 Yes but with the Himiway Cruiser a regular freewheel tool can't be used because of the size of the motor connection plug and the nut doesn't fit over either. I don't agree with using destructive methods either if they can be avoided. I changed mine very easily just following as shown in the Haidong Bike TH-cam channel video (Haaidong makes Himiways)....th-cam.com/video/0oPSRQmpjWE/w-d-xo.html

The good news unless you wear the freewheel gears to point of needing to be replaced you won't have a problem. If you do need to replace the freewheel you can always follow Stan's method.

    Out of interest, could someone tell me if the Hemiway Cruiser has a 123 mm square taper bottom bracket? I am thinking of buying one, and if I did so, would like to add a 46/30 double at the front. In the UK we only get the 250w version of the bike and the average elevation gain is 1,200ft for every ten miles traveled. My own road has a gradient of 14%. I am not so much interested in top speed, but do need hill climbing ability.

    Hi, I got the suggested chainring and freewheel and installed them on the bike without issue. When I went to adjust the derailleur, I could not adjust it far enough to be able to shift into the lowest gear. Even taking the chain in hand and trying to get it to go onto the low gear and and at the same time placing the chain onto the chainring can't be accomplished. It acts like the stock chain doesn't have enough links/length to it. Can you tell me how many links should be in this stock chain?

    Another note on this update to gearing on the Himiway Cruiser. I purchased the same front chain ring as Stan recommended. After mounting it to the crank on the outside of the mounting points I noticed a seaver chain angle when using the larger gears on the freewheel. I remounted the front chainwheel on the inside (closest to the frame) this improved the chain angle a bunch.
    I had to readjust the shifter to remove the noise when using the mid to largest gears. Watch this great video from PARK TOOLS showing the proper method for making those adjustments. th-cam.com/video/UkZxPIZ1ngY/w-d-xo.html

    Stan: I have a problem with my Himiway Cruiser where it SURGES from a dead stop and causes real problems. Its happened three
    times. I am hoping you can help me track down WHAT is causing this. The first time was in my living room when I was trying set the
    pedal assist. the
    I am a musician and the bike LUNGED from a dead stop at 1am and just missed a 00028 Martin (brand new) and hit a nice coffee table and stopped putting a nice DIVOT in the table. OK. I wasn't even touching it! OK the second time:
    I was at a red light and the bike just TOOK OFF and I grabbed the brakes and the bike and stopped it....lucky I didn't get creamed in traffic. It was this time that I realized this was kindof stupid and I was going to get hurt or damage the bike or somebody's car or all three. And I should QUIT riding it. So I headed home. The THIRD and last time. I was at the end of my driveway and it just TOOK OFF into the side of the house and, while I sprained my ankle a bit, I grabbed the bike and stopped it. So I'm not going to ride it anymore until I can get someone to tell me what is wrong. I built it and was trying to set the pedal assist and I can send you the instructions I got from customer service at Himiway to complete this but I never really got it done.
    What would you look for?
    I am going to try and send you a picture of the bike.

      @@notalk-justwalk4597 Good stuff. Didn't need to do anything to the chain? Shifted through the gears OK & ran smoothly? What brand chainring did you use? Excuse the questions but I'd like to do this, but just one time and done right.

      No. Bikes that use freewheel are max 7. Cassettes can't be used on this bike.

      A larger drive gear [chainring] with the same freewheel will result in more speed. I have motors in my shop that prove this. Regards, Fred
