Police Captain Suspected of DUI Begs Officer to Turn Off Bodycam

- WATCH: Oklahoma City police captain James “Matt” French repeatedly begged an arresting officer to turn off his body camera after he was pulled over for allegedly driving under the influence Sunday. During the stop, French who failed a field sobriety test said he drank some beers during a poker game. He was taken to a local detention center and was released on bond. He was placed on administrative during this investigation.

This is why bodycams have become so important. Not only does it hold those in power accountable, it keeps the officer accountable too.

Imagine if the sergeant pulled this prior to body cams. His captain would have gotten a call the next day about his boy was out of line blah blah then it's all based on hearsay.

Problem is even with the bodycams we have documented evidence of cops turning them off to have secret side conversations during an arrest. We like to think these cameras are the great equalizer but until turning them off becomes an actual criminal charge then it doesn’t change much.

I’ve been in law enforcement for 14 years and not once would I ever shut my camera off or cut a break to any member of law enforcement because they know better. No excuse.

This officer showed a lot of integrity. It’s refreshing to see an officer that helps himself to a high standard. He was polite, patient, and professional. This is the type of officer that should be getting promoted.

@@fightsportspace7327 Still happens even with these cameras. The only thing that stopped this officer from turning his camera off was his own integrity and moral expectations. He may return to work the following day shamed by fellow officers for arresting a captain, but there's always gonna be the "good ones" (i just put that in " " cuz every officer is supposed to be a good one) that will respect him. They say that cops are the biggest gang in the U.S. and if you think about it, they all have each other's backs. Lots of scummy stuff goes on that gets hidden to protect one of their own. This is a general statement. My father has been an officer for nearly 30 years now and I look up to him so much. My heart filled with respect as soon as the officer refused to turn his camera off. Always do the right thing.
As a former cop, the only thing I can say is that I hope that Captain is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law as well as being sanctioned in accordance with police department policy.
He sets a bad example. He HAS to be. All he had to do was catch an Uber home or call a cab. Asking the officer to turn the cam off is not something the rest of us citizens can request. I respect this officer who pulled him.

He chose not to openly engage in corruption while making an audio and visual recording that he knew would be seen by everyone. Zero integrity required. It just shows how low our expectations for law enforcement have become.

Needs to be published how many DUI busts the Capt has in his career.
Notice how he immediately asked him to turn off his camera, almost as if that was something he's done before, or that he had a reasonable expectation that the officer would do that for him.
Notice how in every single video like this they all do that. If memory serves, I've literally never heard a cop not ask/demand special treatment during a DUI. Not being hyperbolic, literally every single time. And there are hundreds of examples. Great job this cop did, but there is so blatantly a problem with police culture in this country. And it's crazy too, because it's largely considered to be 'anti cop' when you try and change things so good cops like this can do their job without fear of retaliation.

Well, that's cops for you! They are always getting each other out of trouble. Long standing history of this. A cop I worked with found his drunk son after he plowed into a telephone pole and surprise! no charges! No arrest! Shocker. Long history of not being charged and convicted.

Thank you sir for your professionalism, and honoring your oath! Too many times lately police have turned off, covered, muted, or protected their own. What he said about not caring who it was showed by him arresting him. We need more police like this, and he shows her deserves the rank of SGT.

He did what all cops should do...he was just doing his job. I don't understand the need to say how great someone is because they arent corrupt and did what they should do. I admire the massive balls on the on duty officer. To not only arrest a fellow officer, but a freaking CAPTAIN in his OWN DEPARTMENT, man that’s courage. He’s almost certainly going to face hostilities from within his department for his integrity.

This guy has integrity in spades. Good man, gonna raise good kids, and train good officers. He demands others around him act with integrity just by existing in his current form. bravo.
A+, 10/10 performance from this sergeant. It's not easy to do the right thing and hold your colleagues accountable. I'm sure he's talked about behind his back at his station and lost the respect of a lot of coworkers, but this is justice, and this is what all officers should strive to be. The police - and every other occupation - will never be perfect, but this officer's actions brings them closer to it, and that's heroic.

Cops that don't respect other cops for holding their fellows to the same standard as a member of public are the rats that don't belong on the force in the first place.
Sadly, while some might treat the arresting officer unkindly, it's not his fault for following the oath he took. It's the Captain's fault for putting him in that position. That man should be ashamed of himself
How do you know that his colleagues have resentment towards him because he made this arrest? Did you see that in some day time cop soap opera? My assumption is that they’re glad they got a sloppy cop out of the force. That’s how I’d feel. Stop living in Hollywood’s imagine narrative.

I love how subtle he is being whispering “turn off the camera.” 😂 Police who break the law, especially when it poses such a huge risk to public safety should face enhanced sentencing. This certainly isn’t the first time he got smashed and drove home through his own city.

Un huh... when & where was Capt. FRENCH arrested, booked & thrown in the drunk tank to sober up? I don't believe he paid the price for endangering our roads, citizens & children. Show me the paper trail, fines and mugshots. THEN I'll believe this video was anything but staged bull crap & drama. Show us your proof... we'll wait for it.
