i love this video and is was extremely well researched however i would like to correct one little point. the marlene dietrich inspired art was not used for the a night at the opera cover, it was used for the queen II cover and then the imagery was brought back for the bohemian rhapsody video. great job covering freddie and the band’s amazing style throughout their history, i really enjoyed it!

London in the late 60's/70's was FULL of Freddie's style, your video sort of makes it sound like Freddie was the only one, his only influence being Hendrix. Between Carnaby St, Piccadilly, all the amazing vintage shopping- everybody was experimenting, the music scene esp. (Rolling Stones, etc) Lots of guys were androgynous, experimented with feminine clothing (women's shirts/pants/hats/makeup)...Freddie just happened to become a visible superstar in the style, which he full on exaggerated and perfected into the Freddie image. The point was he was fearless, wore what he wanted, fully expressed himself. There was only one Freddie, but he incubated in a scene that was colorful, fashion absurd, amazingly over the top. London during the time let him be him.

    • @AlphaGeekgirl

Your shirt or polo shirt (not sure what you want to call it) is everything!! I feel like somehow what you wear fits into the story of Freddie's style while going to boarding school! Oversize navy blue (blazer)/white (shirt) but with a boldness that Freddie was known for later on in his career

Wow, I'm impressed by all the info you gathered here. This will be forever my favourite video you ever made. Big fan of the genius that Freddie is. He had made two pieces of clothing for final exams in college, his sister has them. I think that he would of created fashion later in life. I really like what you've said about the kimono and the freedom of expression. My favourite outfit he wore is ALL of them, his sense of fashion and colour schemes he chose make me happy.

Freddie's yellow jacket you mentioned was designed by, Diana Moseley. Worn by Freddie on Queens 1986 Magic tour, The “Rock Solider” jacket is embellished with straps and buckles, eyelets, gold bullion trim, and epaulettes that were used to attach Mercury's white silk stage cape. Moseley and Mercury worked closely during the design process of his tour costumes. Mercury drew the inspiration concept from Spanish opera military costumes and a costume Moseley designed for him in the 1985 music video for “I Was Born to Love You.” Moseley utilized the military inspiration and combined it with a more casual Levi's jacket style to keep Mercury accessible to his audience and not present his as an over-stylized icon. He originally chose a color palette of yellow and red based on the Spanish Catalan flag and his love of Barcelona. Moseley combined this with white since white works well in both natural daylight and with stage lighting. It also increased visibility on stage at the large stadium venues.

@@kazabushy I never said you're not allowed to have an opinion? But honestly, if you're the adult you should act like one. There's no need to act our age when clearly, you know better correct? Mockery and hate are interlinked. If you separate them then I feel sad for whoever is close to you. It's constructive criticism that is separated from hate. Know the difference. Yet you're here, fighting with another "poor, needy, tweenie millennial *sheeple*. Make a counter video explaining the true facts, not disrespecting someone who has in fact put a lot of hard work and research. We, as children are allowed to be wrong because that is how we grow. But how is angrily fighting in comments going to do anything? You're the one bringing yourself to our level, so I'm just responding in that way. It’s the best followed by my love of ever-evolving style of former art schooler.....David Bowie. I sooooooo wish he and Freddie had sung more together. Heaven.

@Asterismos & all the other girls-- He did like the Fat Bottomed Girls a lot. At least enough to write a song about us and put a bunch of us on an album cover!

I saw the Marlene Dietrich reference in the movie as well & therefore assumed that Freddie must have been a fan of her, but didn't notice the similarity between this exact picture of Dietrich and the Bohemian Rhapsody shot/video -> thanks so much for sharing that information.

LOVED this movie and loved your knowledge on this topic. Clearly it was very well researched. Its so cool to see that he had such a knowledge of fashion and he had a reason behind ever article of clothing he wore. I like the picture of him with the kimono because the dirt shows how much he wore it. He thought it was a beautiful article of clothing and he wasn't just going to let it waste away on a hanger. Love!

One thing to consider: not only was he singing and dancing while on stage, but those lights they used get HOT. As in, enough of those big lights on for long enough, and you begin to sweat. Clothing that is loose, sleevless, with pleats to add movement without adding a ton of bulk is a really good, smart choice. Plus he looked awesome in it. So yes, he was a genius in many ways.

I'm forever obsessed with the black and white harlequin leotard. So much so that I'm using hints of that pattern in the decor of my home as a tribute to the man and the band

That was not the cover art for A Night at the Opera! It was the cover for Queen II and they remade it later for the Bohemian Rhapsody music video.
