    Just picked up the Lindell SBC with the Plugin-Alliance promo code for $29.99... it sounds SO good in your demo vs the hardware, there is just no reason at this point for me to spend over three grand on the hardware version. The plugin version sounds like its choking the minute you hit it with gain reduction. there's some nervous pumping going on the end of notes between the guitar, and vocals, and the initial transient of the snare. the API2500 just sounds as it should, controlled and it's my favourite VCA comp after the vintage DBX stuff. the plugin honestly sounds like a generic VCA comp model and it sounds like it has a bit of RMS in its detector (would explain the nervous gain reduction)that it shouldn't have. don't think these sound anything alike to be perfectly honest
    Not the biggest fan of Waves, but they capture the essence of what it does a lot better however many years ago that plugin came out
    TrackComp2 is the one to beat though
    Update: Had a play with the demo and i have no idea what's going on here, but it's not really doing it justice. it sounded a lot better than what is demonstrated in this video on the material i tried it on. one issue i take with it is it's really soft sounding and not as forward as my 2500 or TrackComp2( TrackComp2 can get a little clicky though in a way that isn't reminiscent of the hardware), but it doesn't sound as lacking as it does on this example. the Nuke button is cool in parallel too. i am usually not iffy on Plugin Alliances modelling, but this one is worth grabbing on the bizarre subscription that gets you the plugin for $31

    • @DomSigalas

      Hey John! I tried to give as many examples as possible here. The comparison is fair- same song same settings. I am not surprised you like it but it could be that your track works better with the API compressor in general. I certainly wouldn’t use the API on everything - it works better on some tracks, on others I might use the SSL or Neve.
      In short, the demo showed how the compressor works on this particular track, the drums and bass. I wouldn’t be surprised if it reacted better(or worse!) on other material- it’s only normal. We have to compare apples to apples :)
      But I still love what it did on my tests. Do you have the hardware to compare? I’m my tests the Waves doesn’t sound so close to be honest. But you might like it nevertheless as I do.

      Plug in does sound a bit different, but most of this stuff is just subjective minutiae that no one would ever care about or hear on an actual recording. We're talking about maybe 1 out of every 100,000 people listening to a track that would even notice or care about the difference between the plugin and the hardware. What matters is the ear of the mixing/mastering engineer(s) more than anything else.

      @jamescuttsmusicjcm5013 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheFrygar not just that, but no two hardware units are perfectly alike either. so simply setting everything exactly the same isn't always going to result in exactly the same behaviour. i think a lot of people are splitting hairs in this comments section. it sounds good, and if you used it in a mix, would anyone know you are not using a HW unit? furthermore, would anyone care that much? rofl. Listening to the saturation on the vocal when she's singing "know that" & "mind at" it's clear the hardware has more character, but there is a THD knob on the plugin which I imagine would sound great if its anything like the Lindell 50 & 80 series plugins

    The difference is always there in the more extreme settings, or when there's more musical information going through like on the mixbuss. Pluging sounds good, like most plugins but loses some of it's mojo when pushed while the hardware sounds more pleasing when it's pushed, like it's made for it.

    17:40 I must be honest, that thump with nuke activated is not bad on bass but I didn't like how it sounds on kick drums whatsoever. I often get an unpleasant distortion and didn't even get rid of it with oversampling, hence it refrains me to use it even on drum busses. Since I have never tried an original API 2500 or other emulations I ask: is it expected to sound that way (even without nuke which is exclusive to the Lindell)?

    WOW! I'm really impressed about this plugin. I just bought it today and in the very first moment i ran audio through it I went like: yeah, the HiFi API sound right there. I really love API sound and i think the Lindell guys made an ESPECTACULAR job there. To be honest, there has been some examples in this video where i would've chosen the plugin over the hardware... especially when you weren't driving hard on them. When you did, the compression on the plugin wasn't as natural as it sounded on the hardware (still pretty f*ckn huge!). I really loved the THD knob, i think the saturation it gives is really pleasant and "un-digital". Maybe the overall sound of the plugin is a little more crispy than the hardware as this one gets more the actual electricity tone, giving it a warmer and more analog sound. Nonetheless, i really love this plugin's sound texture as i think it gives a more modern tone.

I don't think so. things can only get better from here too on the SW side of things.
    Let's put it into perspective. I can spend forever playing around with my guitar tone, tweaking every little aspect of it until I am blue in the face... but at the end of the day, the audience never comes up to me after a gig and says "I love that tiny little change you have done with the treble on your amp since the last time I came to watch you guys play". ahahahaha. I can tell sure, but they can't. I am only really bothered about if they walk up and say I play or sound like sheeet.

    I've always been a little confused by the API's detector filter arrangement. The "Thrust" control (as I understand it) is a filter on the detector circuit, as is the "Filter Shape" option in the Link Control section. Now Lindell has added an additional HPF to the detector circuit. Seems like overkill to me. What am I missing?

      Hi Peter.. could you please describe depth-dependent envelope in detail .. Thank you.

    • @artysanmobile
      @artysanmobile 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cycleofficial4744 I’m so sorry, I was typing fast and used unclear language. I wasn’t referring to simply attack time, but rather the shape of the attack AND release times (the ‘envelope’ of the DC control signal) were level dependent. Deeper compression resulted in a change to both and the result is a different sound. I’m not so sure it was fully intended as the musical content tends to dictate the amount of GR the user finds acceptable. It’s pretty noticeable when comparing 3-4dB of GR with 10-15dB or GR. Very different from the much more ‘forgiving’ operation of the most popular compressors of the day, i.e. the optical cell UREIs, which were a breeze to dial in.
      I hope this helps and I apologize for the confusion. Envelope is more of an engineering term.

    Really love the API 2500 compressor, and the emulation is really quite something it has to be said. The funky groove is definitely there with the plugin. It sounds slightly smoother than the hardware and still keeps the musicality. It might be a future go-to at this rate.

In this demo the plugin did fairly well and on isolated tracks the differences were more pronounced, but in a pinch I could see it getting the job done, especially if someone cannot afford the hardware which does sound more 3d, had more punch and a little more sizzle on the top.

      I think people are going a bit ott with the feedback to be honest on this one. no two hardware units are exactly alike, and so the unit they based it on will never be exactly the same as another one in someones studio. so a direct comparison is never going to be possible. does it sound like an API though? of course it does, and in a mix would anyone know any different? i'd love to see the gurus in this comments section fail at a blind full mix test as is so often the case these days. rofl.

    Remember Nutso said it first, you stop or freeze certain processes you can get alot of power with no cpu clipping. better than GPU thats really new and never caught on yet. Cubase might be the first to do it if they listen. No, not gpu, freeze process, as the plugin initially loads, thats all the time it needs for real time processing, which is still real time after it freezes but different kind of real time, like i said, certain processes are smart freeze. So REALLY heavy cpu intense plugin synths or effects will work with almost no cpu spicks. The future is smart.

    Check the CPU… and I’d like know which unit they have emulated? There must be 10000 of this comp right?

      @DomSigalas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is not the CPU you’re seeing, it’s the ASIO Guard meter - it has changed in Cubase 12 and people get scared. It’s more intensive when you use oversampling which is what people have been asking for ages from PA.

    the song has a great vibe ! like usual the hardware does a far better job on high gain reduction settings. but - for moderate setting this plugin is a game changer on the masterbus. by the way i recommend trying this setting on the masterbus: latest attack, fastest release, 4:1 ratio, ALL! green buttons on, except "F.BACK"...change it to "F.FWD", SC 35 Hz, MIX 85 %, LINK 50 %, set your threshold so that you will have a gain reduction of 1 to 3 dB.

    Man, that synth tune you have on the outro is awesome. Who is the artist on that one? The plugin sounds really good. It lacks the depth of the hardware and the snap but I is really good sounding. A lot of that depth can be added again by running an instance of the plugin through a console. That narrows the gap more and gives you more analog depth. Compare that to just ITB and you won't go back. EQ's are definitely there ITB now. Enough to make it not worth it to spend 3k on an EQ. Comps though, still not there depth and 3D wise. That's why the best hardware purchase is going to be a small analog console like an SSL Six or Big 6 or an older console if you can find one. Well done PA.

    The Waves 2500 is actually pretty decent and it’s what I often end up with on a drum bus, but this Lindell one is really good. I’ve already replaced an instance of the Waves one with the SBC on a mix to give it a go, and at similar settings I’m very much preferring the Lindell…

      waves 2500 is the worst emulation of 2500 (there are not that many though), it's fine for $30 but that's about it

    I hear a big difference. Lot of frequencies getting dulled by the Lindell. Less excitement and punch. Especially round 4k and up. UAD and DMG Trackcomp 2 is more spot on.

    On my Bluetooth JBL headphones, which aren't that bad to be fair, the hardware wins in terms of punch and overall sound. I don't dislike what the plugin is doing, it's just not doing it as well as the real deal. Good plugin still.

    The hardware sounds groovier, but the plugin is punchier. I wouldn't say one sounds better than the other, it just sounds like different release curves.
    I'd put the hardware in the master and the plugin on the busses. Just for the fact that you can have many plugin instances, I'd pick the software.
    Very impressing!

      Agreed. Certainly not enough difference to justify spending $3,000 on the hardware unless you happen to be rich and really want some knobs.

    I am truly sorry for saying that (I love your work Dom!!), but I cannot understand this excitement here. Like the time 8:26 ... OMG ... API HW is so so much better. this can't be even compared how good and rich the HW is. The SW is so cold, it makes "digital leveling" only. Even on extereme settings, the plugin is choking the sound only ... But the HW .......... OOOOOOMG... Completely different beast. Now I want to have one. (Listening to it at my studio on Kii3) or the bass at 19:05 so lifeless on plugin and so vital, full, lush on HW. Btw. The old waves API with absolutely outdated UI - sounds still better IMHO. And I was so so excited to buy that one from P.A. I am a huge fan of their stuff... But a big disappointment here :/

      Hey Petr, trust me, I am the most critical when it comes to pieces of gear that I own and know very well. The reason I made the video is so that you guys can make your own conclusions- I was seriously impressed by the plugin. Like I said at the end, if a friend of mine didn’t have the expensive hardware I would recommend this plugin in a heartbeat. Not only it nails the compression characteristic in my opinion but it has some really desirable features. It’s totally fine though, we don’t have to be excited by the same things, that’s the beauty of this world :) For me this plugin brought a smile to my face- I can see it being super useful when I need the API sound in more than 1 channels at the same time without bouncing ;)

    Why real hardware has Mix knob on zero?

    • @DomSigalas
      @DomSigalas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not the mix knob on the hardware. It has both dry/wet parallel modes. When you’re not in these modes this knob is irrelevant.
