They weren't real. As far as I know in the final race Takumi's opponent, Shinji, spoke about wanting to see his "wings" and that is what was shown.

Giraffeseatwindmills before the final race Shinji take a sneak peak at his next opponent. When he does so he sees wings on Takumi's 86. Then in the final race Takumi uses the blind attack and Shinji"s racing line weakness to pass Shinji while show him the wings that Shinji has waiting for.

Pixel. Good for you. Initial D is a pretty long series when taking into consideration that its contents are very niche. You might want to check out Wangan Midnight too if you find out that you like Initial D.
best anime I've watched in years except for 4th to 5th stage, they weren't as good as 1st - 3rd stage

CGI wasn't that bad thou. It made that great feeling of 90's
maciej1201 I find it gives me that uncanny valley feeling, like Blue Submarine, Zoids, or rotoscoping, especially the rotoscoping in Ralph Bakshi's kinda-animated Lord of the Rings. The Prancing Pony scene was all kinds of WTF.

I forgot to add rotoscoping. They were definitely using that too.
I mean, it started in 1998 so you can't blame them for the animation and CGI.
