The rumor is that the knee injury he had in 2014 was the cause of his decline. at the end of the 2013/14 season to be exact. He wasn't the same after that season where he won his first championship league with real madrid. But still he managed to win 2 more Ballon the or and another 2 champions league.

The only thing he did that was kinda free style was the roulette but I'd be damned if I remember him doing step overs or doing backheels. He did it when it was absolutely necessary and Ronaldo seems to do it every time he can even if not necessary. Sometimes that's just too extra. You have to remember that step overs are also a form of dribbling tho. Ronaldinho did bicycles but don't remember him doing many step overs, and his class, style, and technique was far beyond anything I have ever seen. Yes, Messi's dribbling is very bland, but the fact that he doesn't rely on those cheeky techniques and can Meg his way out of 4 players marking is just unreal. We have to learn to appreciate every single player, and Ronaldo shines mostly for his scoring than anything else
