    That video was EXTREMELY helpful! I am flying to Rome in October to catch a Celebrity cruise back to Fort Lauderdale. I will be spending 5 days in Rome before the cruise. I’ve never been to Rome before and you answered a lot of my questions. I’ve bookmarked this video for future reference. Being a member of the Let’s Go Family has its benefits! Thanks so very much!

    We went on vacation to Italy in the off season in 2007. It was without a doubt the best vacation we've had. We had private guides throughout our stay. Our guide in Rome was amazing. His depth of knowledge was the best. The day we went to the Vatican our guide arrived early in the morning and stood in line for us so we were the first in. There is so much to see you can spend a great deal of time to see it all. I can't wait to go back next year on our Med cruise. Hope you have an amazing trip.

    We arrived at FCO last Thursday at 7:30am. Customs was a breeze. No line at all. Didn’t need to see anything but our passport.
    We also did a small group tour with a guide of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and the Basilica. Even though most places are not requiring vaccination cards, the Vatican Museum is and we saw people turned away who didn’t have them. You also need a KN95 mask to enter. Remember Vatican City more or less governs itself, so rules and health mandates are much more strict. Also, you now have to wait in line to enter the Basilica, even if you’ve already gone through security for the Vatican and have a skip the line pass. This is new and the tour companies are not happy about it. There is not a lot of shade and the line can be long, so grab a water before getting in line.
    The Pantheon area was very busy yesterday afternoon. Plenty of places to eat. Tourism in Rome is back in full force. The Trevi Fountain area was packed as were the restaurants. It was really hard to get through the crowds there and the restaurants were very busy. Enjoy your trip. I hope this information is helpful.

    Great info, as always, Allison! We were on cruise once where Rome was a port stop and quite a few passengers took the train into Rome on their own expecting the posted train timetable to be accurate. Not always. Italian time is, um, flexible. Twelve passengers who took the train missed sailing. An elderly family member used to say some people were charmed and could walk through hell unsinged.😅 Not me. I'll book the transfer!

    tip for the Vatican. You can pre book guided tours/tickets via the Vatican website. Holders of tickets/reservations can skip the line. I did a garden walking tour in 2012, it is a unique way to visit, after the the tour you can visit the museums.

    Wow, Alison you just continue to astound me with all the important cruise information you share. I am always impressed. I just thought of a tip as you talked about the Vatican that is good for any tour. When I toured the Vatican, as the halls became more and more crowded a guy in our group was separated somehow from his wife. IN any crowded place this is possible so its good to have a plan ahead of time of where to meet if you do lose each other. By the end of our tour his wife had still not rejoined us. Especially in a foreign country you m any not have the internet and ability to contact someone in your group by your phone.

    Thanks for the suggestion. I haven't booked flight or hotel yet, but I always come in the day before. Hotels are way cheaper booked on your own. Cheapest the cruise line(HAL) wanted was $519 with transfers included. If I buy just the transfer and stay near the airport overnight I can save quite a bit of money booking my own hotel. It's really just a place to sleep, so I don't need extravagance. I've looked at the best Western & it looks like a good plan, Thanks Allison.

    We got a chuckle out of the fear of catching the train to the cruise port. We've done is 7 times now and it works like clock work every time. Luggage storage on the train has never been an issue but of course you need to watch it closely. One of our favourite tours outside Rome is a visit to the catacombs. Lots of history and really quite amazing. The golden rule to getting around anywhere in Rome is to never cary anything that you are not prepared to lose. Always leave your passport in your hotel safe and carry a more easily replaceable photo ID such as your drivers licence.

      @Richard Offenbacher Hi Richard, The larger restaurants especially in tourist areas have people who can speak English. If you are in a smaller restaurant, especially not right in the tourist area, you might have to point at what you want on the menu. They do try hard to please. :)

    Another fun thing to do at the Vatican us the tour under the church to the old graveyard. Very interesting. They take you to where they feel St. Peter is buried. You can also attend the 5 pm mass. Even though I’m not catholic I enjoyed learning about their service and feeling you’re there so long ago for what it is- a church not a museum. Just ask the deacon to attend when the put up the cloth barrier. Anyone can attend.

    FYI for the Vatican make sure that you dress correctly, your shoulders must be covered which means no tank tops of any sort, wear a short sleeve top and also make sure your knees are covered- capri pants, long skirt, men long shorts that go to or below knees and of course pants, I know from experience I was removed from the line because I wore a tank top. Went to the market near by and bought a scarf to cover my shoulders.

    I spent 2 days in Rome after my Mediterranean cruise in November 2019.
    I ate at a restaurant across the street from the Colosseum. I had a vegetarian pizza and some wine.
    It was delicious. It also had a beautiful view of the sunset shining through the Colosseum. There was also a taxi stand a few steps away from the restaurant. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the restaurant. I am a solo traveler. I never felt unsafe while I was walking in this area.

    Thanks for doing this video for those of us who haven’t experienced Rome. My husband and I will be taking the same cruise on June 18. We also will be spending 3 nights prior to the cruise. We will be staying at the Tribune Hotel near the Borghese Gardens. We plan on taking a taxi from FCO airport to the hotel. On the day of the cruise we are taking the Princess shuttle but not from the airport but from a pickup location at a hotel in the city center. We will take a quick ( hopefully) taxi to that hotel. Do you feel that is a good plan as far as transportation goes? We don’t want to deal with heavy suitcases on a train, so the taxi should be good for us.
    Thanks for the suggestions on what to do. We definitely will be looking into some of the tours you mentioned. Have a great trip and I look forward to more videos on this Mediterranean cruise.
    Do you worry about the crowds and lack of social distancing in the days leading up to cruise? I’m a bit concerned as we haven’t had covid but have had 2 boosters and would hate to test positive on our pre cruise antigen test.

    • @LetsGoTravelTips
      @LetsGoTravelTips  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Laurie Steinhauser Hi Laurie, I think your plan sounds excellent. I would allow plenty of time when you plan when to take the taxi over to the hotel to meet the Princess transfer bus. It's always better to be early than let, at least for me. :) We aren't really worried about crowds; we will just try be careful and I'm thinking we'll just put on our mask if we feel like it would help. I know in the Vatican it sounds like we have to wear a mask. We are vaccinated and have 2 boosters as well but I am always a little worried but I can't stop living.

    In October we are flying to Rome to board the Regal Princess. Not wanting anything to go wrong, we booked the flight ✈️ with Princess. We arrive in the morning and sail that same day. We even booked the $70 each for the bus 🚌 ride to the ship. This is my first time outside the United States and I’m not wanting to mess up and miss the ship 🛳. Is this a mistake?

    • @LetsGoTravelTips
      @LetsGoTravelTips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We ALWAYS highly recommend that you schedule to fly in at least one day ahead, especially with the current, higher possibility of cancellations or delays for flights. I know it can be hard with a limited amount of vacation time available (I fully understand, since I'm still working full-time), but the peace of mind knowing that you can still get there OK is worth it to us. If you have booked thru EZ-Air, then Princess will make sure you get there, so you may be OK. If you can afford to add a couple of days, we would recommend you do that, see a couple of places in Rome proper, and have a pizza and gelato! Happy Sailing and thanks so much for watching!
