FINANCIAL EDUCATION GONE WRONG! Jeremy's Portfolio Disaster.

  • Financial Education channel hosted by Jeremy Lefebvre has been around for a long time, Jeremy presents a buy and hold portfolio which looks great when markets are good but becomes unstuck when things turn sour.
In this video we look at the drawbacks of buy and hold, and how retail traders can gain considerable advantage over buy and hold strategies.
A simple moving average can ensure losses currently seen by Jeremy (46% +) can be almost entirely eliminated.

You don't need any special indicators. You just need to prevent small losses from turning into big ones. Use some kind of stop. Doesn't matter what kind -- fixed, ATR, etc.

The problem with Jeremy is that he shifted from buying good profitable companies and into bad companies with zero cash flows. Way more risky ofc. And yes, he bought in the very early stage of the longest bull market in history, as we all hopefully did. Now we’re perhaps seeing the end of it.

great video - i always watch jeremies videos when i had a bad day at trading.
Many investors undererstimate the shortterm trading aspect and are unable to shift from their longterm perspective and evaluation of price when they bought to the perspective of others on a certain day.
When Palantir gaps up now - i see a nice daytrade or very short swing and many others do aswell - they will start selling once they are in good profit or in resitance and some may short then aswell - so the way back up is paved with heavy selling

If your losses are 5% when the market's down 15%, that's a good achievement. And it puts you in a strong position when the market recovers - which it will.

The issue with this analysis is that whenever stocks drop heavily for a considerable amount of time this indicator looks great. However take a different time frame where the stocks drop below the criteria for a short period of time and you would of lost out by simply not dollar cost averaging, holding and buying consistently at the lows as well as the highs.

I could try. It would not underperform for numerous reasons 1) If you sell a position you would reinvest back into a stock with upward momentum 2) Because you limit losses you can apply leverage providing a far superior return.

Setting a target and stop loss at the time of purchase and then using a simple trailing stop loss in line with your beliefs about the individual stock and wider market is a minimum for buy and hold in my opinion... refining your strategy using advanced technical indicators as you become more proficient is a must to advance. Even the MACD is unnecessarily complicated. Really all you need to be doing is buying a stock that where the longer term moving average like the 50 day simple moving average is pointing upwards in a weekly trend and the stock is trading above that line and purchasing and even adding whenever it comes close to the line as long the trend remains upwards. As soon as the stock begins to trade underneath the moving average get out. Either it will fall or there will be a drawn out consolidation phase with no distinct stock direction. Depending where you bought in at, you either hold tight or sell if it’s trending underneath the 50 day SMA. If it’s still in an uptrend you will lose paper profits but over time the stock will recapture new highs but when the trend changes it’s game over for the time being. Hence the saying “the trend is your friend”

  • @Mark_Jacobson81

And the WHY: he can’t sell now because his followers would be fuming, just like Kevin Paffrath copped a bullying (even a little bit from Jeremy) after he sold out (correctly and saved a ton of cash). If he sells anything he would have to admit his fundamental analysis was false. If he sells he would lose a ton of subscribers and therefore income. I wish him luck and hope at least 1 or 2 come back to cover all of the losses.

Main issue here is the companies he was investing in did not have quality metrics, with the exception of Facebook. If you are investing in solid stocks the issue with the MACD strategy is your constantly selling and buying and often buying in at higher prices. Take MasterCard as an example, high ROE, ROIC and net margins. Could have bought early in 2012 for $34. If you would have held to today you would have 10x your money in 10 years. Even buying and selling on a weekly MACD you would have bought and sold numerous times and for what? To sell a business where you earning a high ROE with high net margins.

    • @FinancialWisdom
      @FinancialWisdom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

There are so many variables to consider. Opportunity cost is one, if you sold Mastercard at varying intervals you could have been invested in something else moving upward. The reduced drawdown can allow you to use leverage thereby enhancing the trends up.
Personally I dont just use the MACD and MA, i need a breakout of consolidation and the raising of a stop loss underneath the wick of a closing weekly candle at the MACD cross down - Following such an approach is very good financially.

You are missing the point. Take a minute to stand back and think. What does Jeremy care if he loses money on his investments. He’s making money from you
Just remember, Jeremy personally never loses money. His investments are pretty irrelevant. He makes his money selling courses and share tips, with the odd pumped stock thrown in, not from his investments. Every person who signs up to his courses, makes him money. That is his business model. He comes from a background of selling courses on investing in real estate, it’s the same scam model. Not necessarily illegal, just immoral. It is the same model as others, for example, Robert Kiyosaki, and is as old as the hills
Back in the day, people would be invited to a hotel for a ‘free course’ on how to get rich through real estate etc. only to receive high pressure sales for signing up to other courses, investment newsletters or mentorship.
Obviously he would prefer to be a successful investor but it’s not crucial. The only difference between Jeremy and ‘back in the day’ is he doesn’t get people locked into a hotel room for a ‘free course’. He has the internet instead.
Treat his videos as what they are, enjoyable entertainment. But realise it’s not investing that makes him money

This is a bit of a silly comparison with a lack of understanding of Jeremy’s investment approach. He’s betting on the fundamentals of the businesses and buys if the price makes sense. He scales in and out of a stock and dollar cost averages if it dips. He’s not into timing the market at all. Peter Lynch and Warren Buffet are doing the same thing as Jeremy. The difference is that Jeremy is leaning heavier to growth stocks, which gives him huge profits in up market, but also big dips in down markets. If you are right about the fundamentals and continue to dollar cost average you will be fine.

Hmmm we will have to agree to disagree😃 If he combined technicals with the approach you suggest he would be far better off in sooo many ways. You should always have some sort of plan to get out of a position if (and when) it goes against you, technical indicators are more than capable of allowing that... even the worst lagging ones will give you an edge in that respect, cutting losses is at least as important as making money. If you cut losses in a downturn then you have that cash to invest on the upturn, it's survival. Reading the comments on Jeremy's videos is eyeopening as much as watching his videos is eye-watering, everyone seems to be praising his fortitude in diamond handing his "investments" regardless of how much they fall, it's almost like holding in the current market proves his machismo, perhaps the commenters feel the need to validate their own choices.
