We looked at The Jane for a trip last year. Bathroom was a dealbreaker for my wife. We stayed at Leo House, same neighborhood, $20 more but we had a standard bathroom in the room, and breakfast. Charming and historic in its own way, same general area, can recommend.

I think it's a rare gem. You don't visit NYC to be pampered by a hotel in the way it is for Las Vegas. No, you're here to spend 90% of your time exploring a city. It seems a lot safer than a hostel. I wish they had the same in Queens or Brooklyn since I need to spend more time there. I've already seen too much of Manhattan during my visits. It's a great idea.

Yeah I have no issues with the hotel itself (I actually quite enjoy little spaces like that - cosy) but I'm concerned about the location. Apparently there's a night club on the premises and being so far from public transport and single female traveler who plans being out at night, well....
(Also I've read some reviews about it being a pay by the hour hotel, if you get my drift)

I actually stayed there in October. And I could not lay my suitcase on the floor to open it - only on the bed.
But the rooftop is beautiful, the staff is very nice, and if - as you said - you use your hotel for sleeping and are out exploring all day, it is just what you need at a good price

Im a Canadian tourist just getting back from Manhattan and wow what a city to be in. I was pleasantly surprised that not everyone was rude lol! Many people were very nice actually. Stayed at the Millennium Broadway on 44th right beside Time Square. Subways smelt like pee everywhere but were soo efficient for traveling. Absolutely loved NY and hope to return one day.

The people are very friendly, most of them are just in a hurry or are focused on getting somewhere so they appear rude. Some of the nicest people are there, many don't know it though. Glad you saw past the stereotype! I love NYC, glad you loved it too😊

You make a good point about it being like a train sleeper compartment. That puts a different perspective on it for me. I am not sure why anyone is bothered by a ten minute walk to a subway--that area is great and you'd be so busy looking at everything, the time would zoom by. Plus, visitors to NYC should try using buses. Being above ground means you see things and you can save the subway for covering the longer distances. The M11 bus is two blocks away.

I’m so glad to have seen this video from you today! I found out about The Jane when looking into budget accommodations in NY and love the history and architecture. I’m so glad my daughter has a sense of adventure because she is also excited to stay here with me. Its a place to sleep for us, has a great rooftop to look out from, and is so close to great food stops, Chelsea Market and Highline. We can’t wait - shared bathrooms and all! That said because she is a minor, we will be going to the washroom together but that’s such an easy compromise (toilets and showers are private within the shared space). Honestly, don’t know why you wouldn’t stay here! I booked 6months in advance (from Canada) and got a rate of $105USD. We are staying 2 nights (we have 3 hotels in NY over a week) and honestly the 2 nights here are less then a single night anywhere else we are staying. Your videos have helped me build a great trip so thank you!

I love the Jane Hotel, I stayed here this past June for my trip to New York. I booked the single bed one and it had a little more room than the bunk bed one but I was out all the time exploring the city that I didn’t mind. What I also loved was that they have a night club in the hotel. I would definitely recommend the Jane Hotel to anyone who’s on a budget and is planing on visiting New York.

What your missing is the beautiful coffee shop and the Friday and Sunday night club that they line up for. The club has the Disco ball from Studio 54. I live in Battery Park down the road and stayed there for the experience. The developers poured a ton of money into restoring the Jane to the previous time. The faucets are beautiful. When I researched them I found that they are so expensive and the best and kept to the era. Thank you Jane developers for giving us New Yorkers back and preserving a piece of our history.

This was a great idea & adventure & fun way to show The Jane! 👏 Seriously, nicely done! I have stayed when a friend was visiting...slept on the floor! So I would happily take a bunk bed haha. Those worried about sharing a bathroom have clearly never lived in a NYC apartment/house with roommates...but I understand your hesitation. If you can get past that (and don't travel with tons of luggage) give it a try! Or you can always book the larger rooms. Cool place!

I grew up in the neighborhood, and my dad actually owned the builing next to the Jane Street Hotel. It's still amazes me how the hotel and the area aroung have gone so "upscale." It's changed from what was the "actual" meat packing disctict, and the hotle is no longer the flea-bag flop house it was. It may be a nicer place to stay at than it was, but "something" about New York always gets lost in these kinds of transformations.

But by 1995, the Village was a pale shadow of what it was before; I left in 1991 to go to Brooklyn. And like New York itself, Brooklyn has changed, and not what it was when I got here. I stayed here before in 2021 I believe, when I didn't feel like commuting back and forth into Manhattan. I believe the single bed room was $70 or $80 a night. It was a pleasant experience! The rooftop and restaurant were closed at that time due to the pandemic, so I only was really there to rest for the night. Very charming, vintage, Wes Anderson vibe... I always warn tall people (5'10"ft and over), you will be longer than the bed, LOL.
Wish this video had been around when I first tried the Jane out.

The La Quinta Hotel by Strawberry fields (i think its around W. 67th st) is an excellent deal. I paid 125 for one night in an old rowhouse that had been converted into a hotel, and it was the best deal ever. It's in lincoln park which is a great neighborhood for a tourist to stay in, right by central park, plenty of food choices, safe, best of all it had a private bathroom, with a shower!!! (it was extremely cramped, but worth it for the privacy)
And the room was actually a little less than twice as big as the one in this video. I have it saved because it will probably be my go to hotel room whenever I visit manhattan/the city in general.

This is an excellent (as usual) Jon Barr video, and a fine introduction to the Jane Hotel for prospective visitors. The building has nautical design elements because of its original purpose to provide inexpensive and safe housing for sailors from the liners and cargo ships that used to crowd the harbor (see the history section of the Jane's website). I stayed at the Jane last December and while the bar and restaurant being closed was an inconvenience, Hector's Diner and Cafe, tucked under the nearby High Line, is a gem. And the hotel is very close to the Whitney Museum. A gentle reminder that the RMS Titanic was an ocean liner, not a cruise ship, and thanks for drawing attention to the ocean liner plaques mounted on the fence near the entrance to Little Island.

Interesting place. I enjoyed all the history you found out about it. Would I stay there? Sure. If money was tight and my plan was to stay out all day and use the room as nothing more than a bedroom, then I don't see why not. I am a little claustrophobic but at least there's a window, that helps. The shared bathroom would be the worst part, but everyone has to use a public restroom sometimes and it's probably a lot better than that. I definitely wouldn't want to live there for 30 years though! 😆

I visited there in early-mid 90s. Definitely a welfarish hostelry of last resort. Built as a Seamans' Relief Center, later a YMCA until it's conversion to a hotel. Theater there was once very active, launching Hedwig and the Angry Itch.

It looks awesome! I've stayed in rooms that small (and with shared bathrooms) so it wouldn't be a problem for me, and really....if you're spending the bulk of your day out exploring NYC who cares about the other stuff, as long as your lodging is safe and clean.

So interesting thanks for sharing. Even though I'm a native I watch the tourist videos too!. I would stay here save money. As a tourist you spend very little time in a room. Let's say you are having work done in your apt and you just need an overnight place it would work.
If you came here with your wife and child it would be a tight squeeze. Thumbs up to all of your videos

Love staying at The Jane. This past March 2023, my room was $95.00 per night. I travel to NYC three times each year and always stay at The Jane. Nearby is a great place for breakfast , Hector's! Opens at 5:00AM. Hector's is next to the last remaining meat packing business in the Meat Packing district. Love that area!

I am a Canadian who was in NYC in April 2023. We watched your video and stayed at the Jane. Unfortunately the hotel is under construction for the next year, so we didn’t get the full Jane experience. The room was just fine… but I am a boater and very used to this type of accommodation… we also just slept there as we were out and about all day. The lack of a private bathroom was a bit of a negative point as we were sharing the bathroom with construction workers in the morning. Mind you, they were all very nice. The hotel is in a great area… close to the Highline, Hudson River Greenway, Little Island, Chelsea Market etc. Loved the quaint neighborhood… the cobble stone street was an added bonus. In the end we paid $240 Canadian for the room. I would stay there again… my partner would prefer a bit more of an upgrade.

I did consider the Jane for my recent trip in Dec and for my now booked trip for Jan 2024. Long Island City is the pro tip though. Hotels that are much nicer and a fraction of the cost of NYC central hotels. Short walk to subway stations and into Manhattan in as little as 10 mins from walking out of your hotel front door. Impossible to beat.

I'm planning a trip to New York later this year, don't have a big budget so I'm currently looking for a cheap hotel not too far from the center, and this one might be what I need. I don't care about the size of the room, or the shared bathroom, only need a place to sleep. And all the Titanic-related stuff is amazing. Thanks for that.

I lived in the Chelsea Hotel in the seventies and my large studio with kitchen and bath was 285 a month with a stabilized lease. I had many friends in the Chelsea and we always wondered how much a river view at the Jane would cost. At 5he time the Jane was an SRO (single room occupancy) which catered to single old men , retired sailors and down in their luck men and women alcoholics. It is notable that the Jane started to upgrade its image in the 80's and had a punk club and was the first off Broadway home of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Pre Covid, before I moved to Queens, I would rent a room for the week at various YMCA's, they have one in Flushing, Greenpoint, Harlem and two in Midtown, the prices were below 100.00 a night, and tax free. The only place now is West Side Ymca.

I've stayed in this hotel and loved it, however what you didn't show is that this hotel has a nightclub next to the lobby and can get really loud and quiet at night if you aren't on a higher level floor. Usually a huge line to get in so you have to go the front and let them know you are a guest to get in past the huge line.

    • @susie9893

I've stayed in The Jane twice. John gave a fair review. Having the bathroom/shower down the hall is not ideal, but not that bad. And the walk from the closest subway station does add a little bit to most of your travel compared to some other hotels. But, I've seen prices as low as $80 a night depending on the season and you can't beat that.

I stayed at the Jane on a solo trip a couple of years back. The shared bathroom was spotless, with spacious shower cabins! Fun fact: on my first night I was coming back from the shower and my room key didn’t work. I had to go down to the fancy lobby in that bathrobe. The horror 😏. Had breakfast at La Bonbonnière a block away, which is a very budget friendly spot too. Thanks for this trip down memory lane!
