IIRC, the Euro Escort had too much cost in it to sell at competitive prices in North America. This was basically a Mazda Protege underneath and gave Ford dealers a competitivly priced entry level car.
Loving these old Driver's Seat episodes, but in hindsight, some of the criticism's are a bit wonky. There's a huge difference between 1st and 2nd generation Escort's. Not many cross shopped a Celica and an Escort either. You have to question some of the "Marketplace" competitors here- 240SX, really?
I believe this Escort had a Mazda powertrain, used in the 323 Protege.
Yep - it was a Mazda 1.8 - great engine
yep , it was a protege clone with rear disc brakes. Protege had drums. and 2 more doors
Question I also wonder? Why was there two different Escorts?

Never seen this review before, it must be a Canadian review.

Escort GT would demolish the non-turbo Celica.
Can't believe they didn't know ford and mazda went joint op on this, I have a 1991 ford escort gt and literally some interior parts say made in japan
Lucky North America - the Euro ones that came out at this time were infamously lousy!
