Thank you Dr. Tracey Marks for this video, you have explained the psychedelics' potentials on medical use very well. We, a clinical trial site in the UK, are currently conducting research on psychedelics for people with depression. We are happy to see this may be an option for patients who need it as eligible participants would be able to take part and see whether this method works for them.

@@edunlap6594 No the reason that it's illegal is pretty complicated. It has been admitted by several government officials that they sought a reason to get mexicans, black people and hippies in jail, and weed was the common factor, so making that illegal was the easiest option. Another reason it has become illegal is because the hippie movement was a threat to US foreign policy since they protested against the Vietnam war. The hippies claimed no one who used LSD would want to be sent to war. That's a quick way to convince a government to make a drug illegal.
Yet another reason psychedelics are taboo is because the prior research that was performed was done by researchers who were very biased and were a little too much into the drugs. They interpreted the results in ways that fit their view and some even created a sort of cults around the psychedelics research, dragging students in. One big example of the researchers that I'm talking about is Timothy Leary. Can recommend checking out the Wikipedia page about him.

Pscilocybin lifted me out of my depression for 4 months after 1 single experience. It works but I think that you will always fall back to your original state after awhile... But that room where you get lifted out of it might be just what you need to change your routines and life to get on a better track.
But don’t play around. There’s some serious risks to ponder about doing psychedelics as well. It can for example being out schizophrenia in some individuals and bad trips can be seriously traumatizing.

@@chriserony Not to mention an 80% rate of addiction cessation (smoking and drinking specifically) among those who had legit spiritual trips. And I mean PERMANENT cessation of smoking/drinking as they tested them 1 to 1.5 years later and 80% still remained sober. Will it last forever? Perhaps not. But Taking something once or twice a year for a couple years WILL provide greater benefit. This is why they recommend 2 doses for "Treatment Resistant depression", taking one dose should be then combined with the continuation of Anti-Depressants, as Psilocybin INCREASES the amount of Serotonin in the brain, whereas SSRI/SNRI anti-depressants stop the body from REMOVING that Serotonin. However if your body is producing little to no serotonin to begin with, it won't help that much. You need something to hit the 5HT-2A receptors and create more natural serotonin as artificial reuptake inhibiting will always be less "natural" and lead to more side-effects. But a combination can be a god-send for those who need it (Although in a small subset serotonin syndrome is possible i imagine. You would want to lower your dose or get specifically tested somehow.)

Ketamine changed my fucking life. It’s literally unbelievable. You won’t even try to believe me, but I went from a suicidal mess, to this content person that feels lucky to be alive. I’m more caring to my gf and dogs. I immediately felt the need to take steps to fix the relationships with people I hurt. I no longer wish I was dead every waking moment.
Literally over night. I mean, I took a bunch of ketamine.. like, a fucking lot on night. But at the time I didn’t care. I was already dead and I morphed into god and soared through the universe and lived in eternity. Eternity is what feels like changed everything. It was terrifying. Every second seemed to be years where I was dead and there was nothing I could do but just be, in a room, forever. Could hardly move my body how much ketamine I was on lol.
I’ve done like every drug over the past 8 years trying to self medicate. I figured I gave up on trying to fix myself and was just in it for the good times when I stumbled upon this stuff.
No psychedelics compare. They’re great, don’t get me wrong. I love all the things they showed me, and they’ve helped me understand a lot of my problems, but they also showed me how useless I am and how there’s really no reason for me to be here.
Ketamine was just as mean, but I saw it in a different light. No ones life means anything. We’re just on an incredibly luckily positioned rock flying through the unit verse to our inevitable destruction. We all die. It’s just about the ride. You can’t have the good without the bad. You wouldn’t know what good is if you didn’t know bad. I saw the people’s faces. There were sad ones. There were mad ones. But then there were happy ones, and it lit a fire in my soul that’s been out longer than I can remember. I want to be one of those. That’s all I want with this. I can’t go throw it away and not get that.
Like I said, you won’t even begin to believe me. You’d have to have experienced it. If someone told me they morphed into God himself, I’d look a little crazy eyed too lol

I ONLY believe you because you shared that you morphed into God. Until that moment, it's all the emotional equivalent of navel gazing.
What gets a person to that point is specific to the individual. Some people require nothing-- it just spontaneously occurs. You, on the other hand, had abused your body and your brain to such an extent that it took something which would be extremely dangerous to the vast majority of humans to blast you out beyond your limitations.

I really enjoy how open minded you are. In France it’s not really the same, and every time I dared to talk about those research even with friends they looked at me like I was a freak! As I did schrooms once and had a great experience and understood a bit about myself, I was psyched, as I had no doubt it could be something real, when done properly and not for fun like I did. But for a few hours I felt light, ok, safe. And for a bipolar, that was a great experience! I felt like I was experiencing life itself for a moment, away from depression, self harm and all those nasty friends of it. Hope I made sense, I’m French, and it’s hard to describe something like that, even in French so in English..quite a challenge!

One of the guys in this alternative spirituality group talked about his experiences with them, and he made it sound like tripping could be a wonderful, even healing and eye-opening experience. I was fascinated, but I never dared to try and get my hands on a sample. It would be great if one day soon, mushrooms became legal on the federal level in the USA. Very informative videos. I've been treated with Ketamine for 2 months and I am very impressed with the outcomes. First, I have not experienced any negative effects. That said, I have not wanted any alcohol since the day after the first treatment and nor have I had a drink since that time. I've abused alcohol almost everyday as an adult which has been for 50 years. This is the best evidence that I can put a finger on that the effects of Ketamine are valid. There have been a few additional benefits I have experienced with this drug integrated with supportive psychotherapy. I appreciate all the work you have invested in developing these videos with the goal of helping other mentally ill people who have not had an alternative until recently.

Update: I took 1 gram on the empty stomach when I woke up, my first dose was on saturday. After around two hours I noticed I was so calm and relaxed. I notice I can focus better. Day 2: Same dose, first thing on the morning. My anxiety and depression is 90% off. At work i am more focus and I have more energy. I feel more connected whit my kids and wife. Day 3 don't have mood svings or anxiety. I feel so live and happy. At work i notice i don't care what other people think or feel about me. I have control on my emotions first time in 13 years!! Today I feel great I reduced my antidepressant dose from 150mg to 100mg. I don't understand why is this iligal in some countries! Not a single medication help me so fast and whit zero side effects. I watched this video on my TV and I had to pull out my laptop so I could leave a comment. I have heard of some initiatives in my state for psilocybin-assisted therapy and it is currently a burgeoning area of research practice. From what peers in the field have told me, this research is to better understand how psilocybin can be integrated into clinical mental health practice.
I'm currently an Associate Clinical Social Worker, gathering my hours while working in public mental health, to get my LCSW. My work experience puts me in direct practice with the most under-serviced communities with the highest needs. The future of psychedelics in the field excites me because it could have a significant impact on these communities & larger sociopolitical implications. anyways, enough nerding out!! Thank you for the insightful video!!!

Set & setting are vital in taking psychedelics (you need a place preferably in nature at night where you feel safe and comfortable and a really good friend who knows you well). In ayahuasca /eye-a-was'-ka/, the Taita (Shaman) also drinks the tea to help him help you and see your issues. Most ayahuasca (aka yagé /yah-hey/) ceremonies are at night outdoors with a campfire accompanied with Andean music and mouth harp instruments (although didgeridoos would also be amazing). Mother Aya always gives you a "panoramic life review" and shows you how to be a better person. The next morning after aya is a mini-reawakening that leaves you with a lot to ruminate about for weeks if not a lifetime.

Greetings from Brazil! Awesome channel and awesome video! Ayahuasca is definetly very transformative and very powerful for consciousness broadening and spiritual and emotional healing. However, it's not very recommend to drink it on your own (without an experienced shaman or therapist). Although we call it 'a tea', it's not exactly a tea, and if it's taken in an inappropriate set and setting, it can be scary or even dangerous. Ayahuasca really is AMAZING for both therapeutic and spiritual purposes, but NOT recreational. We also don't consider it to be a hallucinogen. We classify Ayahuasca, Mescaline, Psilocybin, etc, as Entheogens. Cheers guys!

Awesome video, Tracy! I love the work that you do in making medical information more available/digestible to us layman!
I am all for getting this stuff out there and available, but I am equally concerned about the drug companies doing what they have always done, which is the theft of indigenous plant knowledge and subsequent manufacturing of artificial versions of the active ingredients, which then can be patented and commodified. The problem with this is that, first off there are other compounds that have a roll in the plant medicine's work, and these compounds get ignored frequently when dealing with this type of situation. Add to that to propensity of the state to make unavailable anything that cannot be profited on, and we can see the possibility of these drugs being made only available in synthetic versions while making the natural versions hard or impossible to come by, thereby "cornering the market" while demonizing the original sources.
In short, the problem is the untrustworthy nature of the government, especially when concerning health, wealth and power.

I dony like the feeling of not being in my own mind and having self awareness.

that’s obviously your right, but maybe keep ketamine in the back of your mind. it treats both chronic pain and depression. i get it myself. The hallucination / out of body experience is limited to the 30-45 minutes of the infusion itself at a clinic, and can leave you with lasting good mood and reduced suicidality for days. since it’s in a time-limited period, and because a nurse is always in the room with me to administer it, i dont feel unsafe or out of control during the hallucination-they actually let me play instrumental music i like in the background

I hear its becoming "yoga" as in pseudo-Shamans belonging to companies do the ceremonies - which is a shame. I love LSD- always have, the first time i took it my whole life changed after the world I knew become much larger and more amazing than what I thought it was. After years of abuse as a foster child the change in my thought process was truly altered for the better. I was sceptical about Ayahuasca only because Mother Nature will dose how she pleases :) After I learnt Olivia Newton - John did it with her husband in the Amazon and said she had a profound shift in consciousness was i really interested.

The mushroom is a teacher and you have to give full respect and reverence. If you fight the experience it can lead to trauma and potentially PTSD. If you let go and let the mushrooms do their thing they will HEAL you and liberate your soul!

I am currently in a clinical trial for this. Recently had my dosing day. While this video combined with her other psychedelic videos is one of the better narratives I’ve seen, it still falls way short of what it needs to be.
The biggest disservice people like the Dr. here are committing is saying it’s using psychedelics to treat disorders. And videos and analysis like this are actually damaging to the immediate and long term progress. It is inaccurate and misleading and I can tell you from my experience that people having only information like shown here makes going through it more difficult because others just don’t understand and appreciate and think you’re just going on a joy trip and then you’ll be fine, and you the patient has different expectations and struggles leading up to and through it. That it’s a fun pleasure cruise and your lucky and it’s easy. It also jades your personal experience. It is truly damaging to the therapy outcomes and the pre-guilt of sort you have.
They need to acknowledge it is the therapy that is the treatment, the psychedelic is an enabling tool. The dosing session is very hard work and very difficult. And that even outside of any hallucinatory experiences (I personally didn’t have much strong ones). The analogy is if your car breaks down, you don’t go to the store and buy a nice tool kit and come home and expect that to fix your car. You won’t fix anything and you could actually make things worse. You still need a master mechanic and repair guides and other supporting facilities to fix your car. To fix your brain.
And even then, it’s dirty, messy, hard work and you’ll bust your knuckles in the process. It is not an easy therapy route. And it’s not quick either. It also depends a lot on the patient themselves.
There need to be more honest, accurate, and responsible videos on this therapy. For the patients and for 3rd parties who interact with the patient in the lead up and run down.

Sure, but compared to the current lines of medication treatment, it sounds and is very promising.
Current medications are essentially blunting tools. They just take you in your current state and put a filter so you don’t “see” (or feel) the negative symptoms you’re having. It’s a bandaid.
While psychedelics provide an experience, that allows you to think in ways you’ve never thought of which has an effect that can last for months.
But I do understand what you’re saying, that psychedelics are not an instant fix, but more of a journey which requires you to face your fears. That still sounds better than treatment with current medications tbh.

Dr - I STRONGLY urge you to experience Ayahuasca for yourself, under the guidance of a Shaman. This area of medicine is something we just don't have yet while it has existed for thousands of years elsewhere. These shamans have handed down the knowledge. I think they would embrace a physician participating. Their goal aligns with that of a physician, to heal. Please consider this and sharing your thoughts on youtube. If you can, go to Peru. If not, there are US based retreats as well, but Peru is the OG ayahuasca experience. I encourage you to "do your research" when picking a retreat to make sure you're always in good, healing hands. Thanks for educating people on the promises of psychedelics. Sadly there's A LOT of political cleanup that needs done.
