Good gut health and a healthy mindset has been my life path for the last 18 months! 18 months ago I was rushed to the hospital! I was bleeding internally! I had 2 openings inside my gut, and I was bleeding internally! The doctors told me it was due to stress! They repaired my tummy and after a week I went home. About a month later I was diagnosed with C Diff! I caught it from the hospital! The day l found out about the C Diff diagnosis my family Doctor, sent me to a Specialist named Dr. Tom Louis. He took care of me! After some heavy duty antibiotics,Dr Louis gave me a Fecal microbiol Transplant (FMT)! I received the FMT last February, and the main thing I've noticed is my mental health has improved greatly ✨💃✨ And I am cured from C Diff 😊 Ty for this video ❤
I had a gastric sleeve done 12 years ago and have trouble eating. I take supplements because I'm 63 and unwell. Supplements have saved my life! But I will add more fermented foods! Thanks Doc!
This is similar to the healthy soil cycle. Adding chemical stimulants that have an illusion of adding fertility to plant production, they short cut the natural cycles occurring with the bacteria and microbes. The soil becomes unproductive and reliant on additives to grow less nutritious plants. Soil needs a good cover of diverse plants and root systems exuding sugars to set up for resiliency and vitality, and to weather and outside factors. Not all systems are the same, though. I would imagine human guts have a diversity to what suits the individual's balance.
This makes me wonder if autism and ADHD are partly influenced by gut bacteria. We know autism is in part caused by pollution, and that probably includes what's in the local water...
Exactly what I was thinking! I've struggled with what I'm certain is (undiagnosed) ADHD for years, but always struggled with my gut as well and had gut issues as an infant and was incredibly fussy as a child. Now nearly 49, and hitting perimenopause, I'm struggling big time and have been looking into various ways to heal my gut and eat healthier. An ongoing process! It would also help explain the surge in ADHD / autism diagnoses in recent decades, at the same time as highly processed food has become prevalent in western society. I learn so much from Tracey's channel!
As much as I understand science as a constantly developing source of knowledge, it's a bit annoying that twelve years ago I went to several doctors of all stripes with chronic GI symptoms only to be loaded up on 90mg of oxy per day (I was in my early 20's) and sent to several tests only for doctors to shrug their shoulders and say "Welp. Guess we'll just remove his gallbladder." Fast-forward a decade, I wind up with a diagnosis of autism in my early 30's, learn about this whole "gut-brain connection" thing, take a pre-/post-biotic compound, get off the opioids, get off the benzos, and oh boy do I feel different. I realize there are plenty of doctors out there who get into the profession because they genuinely want to help people, but it's awfully hard to differentiate between those and the ones who just want to get paid because they get off on cutting into people.
So what you're telling me is that when I blame my decisions on 'gut instinct' I'm actually just getting peer pressured by several trillion microorganisms? Well played, bacteria. Well played.
I've been eating a couple of spoons of greek yogurt before meals for better gut bacteria and for my acid reflux. I'm noticing improvement in acid reflux but I'm still at week 1 so I'll definitely try and be consistent and see what results i end up with
Perhaps the most interesting medical developments in past two decades. I know internists and geriatricians who say the gut micro biome was not thought of as important overall health when they were in residency/fellowship training Do you think psychiatry is go the same way?
Thank you, Dr. Marks. Great channel. Very helpful information. I love all the foods you describe, it’s just so much easier to default to fast food and less healthy food and snacks. I needed this nudge to balance my proportions
Dr Marks could you do a video on the controversy surrounding psychology research lately? "Replication crisis" seems a bit alarmist, but it would be so helpful to hear your perspective, as well as a potential opportunity for a primer on how to approach scietific literature as a lay person. Thank you for all your content!!
It's still a catch-22. I need the healthy gut microbiome to be able to make all of the executive function decisions necessary to make a well planned diet that will give me a healthy gut in a couple months. That's why we turn to extreme diets, simplifying the decisions to a very narrow range of foods e.g. all bananas or all steak. But those all go in the opposite direction towards less biodiversity. Trying all these new foods also awakens every kind of bowel distress and possible allergy. Went to the allergist, they said "just avoid all the foods that give you distress" after handing me my results showing I reacted to everything I ate that week. He had never seen a positive reaction for lettuce in his career 🤦♀️
When you say eat this and that, I would make a diary, write down what I ate everyday write down the mood and what I would be thinking about 30min to 5 hrs. later, cause everyone is different, food might work for you but, not someone else.
Exactly. Considering this, I don't quite understand HOW neurotransmitter production in the gut affects the brain. Yes, the gut bacteria produce neurotransmitters, then the vagus nerve relays this to the brain, and then what? Does just "knowing" there is serotonin in the gut affect neuron signaling in the brain? Or does it upregulate the production of serotonin, dopamine, other neurotransmitters in the brain and/or prevent their reuptake?
Problem is it's expensive to eat enough macros alone. To get the micros you need fruit and veg with have no macros in them and can cost a fair amount. In the UK food costs so much. To then buy all this fruit and veg will cost maybe £10-£20 more which people don't have.
Gut serotonin doesn't cross the blood brain barrier though. How do GLP1 meds affect gut? I started in early August and after a 40 lb drop in weight and diet dialed down off junk food, a marked improvement in mental health..Also that GLP1 meds slow food processing and wondering how this affects the gut biome process?
Any idea how someone that had their gut wrecked by Covid can recover their gut balance? I’m on month 9 of this nightmare and even though I see windows of feeling better I’m soon taken back to the chronic stomach ache and unbelievable anxiety. I already eat a clean diet due to Covid causing food, supplement, and medication sensitivity. I can’t even take probiotics or vitamins except D3/K2 without a setback.
I didn't have to watch this one Dr👩⚕️.Marks(I'll tune in @ a later date), I am proud to say I don't eat sweets anymore & I am 90+ day without them. No more🥧🧁🍰🎂🍪🍩🍧🍦🚫🙅♂️.
Also, depending on the brand, yogurt and kombucha can come with a lot of added sugars which defeat the benefits of eating something fermented. Check the label first. I eat a plain, organic yogurt as a fermented food choice and its been helpful for me.

Howdy Tracey, ah, you need an (s) at the end of the word "control" in the title......have a nice day too!😊
Bacteria is the plural of bacterium so "control"is correct
. It is a latin word.
Hi, the “s” is not needed in this case, as “bacteria” is the plural form of the word (i.e., “bacterium controls” or “bacteria control”). 😊
