I agree with you but they won't do it due to the Cafe standards the government set up for mpg of vehicles. Thats really the issue they try and get the trucks more fuel efficient and it causes more problems than it fixes. It is a truck and people who buy trucks for the most part I think understand that you will not get 40 mpg out of it lol

That AFM in vehicles with 8-speed autos has been causing transmission shuddering in some vehicles when going into V-8 to V-4 mode. GM. changed the transmission oil specs which helped out quite a bit.

I'm a former Chevy tech and I cannot tell you how many of these lifters I've replaced. I've replaced lifters, pushrods and lifters, and lifters, pushrods, and camshafts. The lifters either get stuck expanded or stuck closed and either bends the pushrod or just causes a misfire. Job pays 9 hours to do one bank or 11 for both banks but we were doing so many of them, we were able to knock out 1 bank in about 2 hours. I've seen 2020-21 trucks/SUVs with only 1800 miles in them. This is a great example of a lawsuit that makes no effort to differentiate actual defects from GM and cases of lifter failure due to owners with room temp IQ's that don't change their oil often enough, don't check their oil level, add so much oil it causes oil aeration, drives short trips all winter long and causes the oil level to increase due to the amount of unburned fuel that's diluting the oil down and causing wear, etc. If your lifters made it 100k miles and then later fails, that wasn't because of a defective lifter, that's a case of an owners that joined the "I change my oil ever 7500+ miles cuz I buy the good stuff" when their DI engine has been loading up that oil with diesel-like soot and unburned fuel for that entire interval and has caused wear and sludge formations that cause lifters to malfunction.

I had a 2015 Sierra with the 5.3l. I ran it up to 150k miles in just 3 years and had tons of issues with the engine. Multiple trips to the dealer, then after the warranty, multiple trips to the local engine shop. No one figured out what was wrong with the truck. Then one day I was road tripping it, I had the oil changed the day before and I know the engine oil was full and the low engine light came on, and that was it. Only 1000 miles on a fresh oil change and the thing was low on oil. I had always that issues since my first oil change at 5,000 miles a the dealer. It never leaked. That 5.3 made a rod pop out the side of the block. That was that, I sent it off to the junkyard.
I have since purchased a 2006 Silverado 5.3 it had 15,000 miles on it in 2018. Now it has 165k miles on it, and I have had zero engine issues with that truck.
I wouldn't buy any GM engine that has active fuel management. I'm sitting here wondering if I can recoup any of the money I put into my 2015. If not, I hope you guys win this lawsuit.

I used the Range AFM disabling module on my 2010 5.3 Silverado and it literally saved the engine. The #1 & #7 cylinder plugs would foul and this started under warranty. GM would perform service to mask the problem and get you through warranty. The truck started using oil too. I discovered the Range AFM module and drove the truck to 230K before trading it in. Plug fouling stopped, oil consumption stopped as the engine cleaned itself up. I transferred the module to the 2018 Silverado I purchased also with the 5.3 so I’m hoping for the same long term results. I wouldn’t drive the GM product without disabling the AFM it’s junk!

Don't leave that thing plugged in if your not driving every day. Replaced 2 batteries because of that device. It's great but puts a slow constant draw. I think I'm just going to get a tuner because they can disable afm and don't have to be plugged in. Also don't unplug that thing after the engine is running. My truck stayed in 4 cylinder mode during idle and was running like crap, couldn't even drive it because it wouldn't go to v8. Luckily I disconnected the battery and the computer reset, all has been good since.

My 11' WT 4x4 with the 4.8 has 253k and it's been amazing. Replaced 1 motor mount, shocks & struts, front hub bearings, brakes, tires and 1 blower motor. I put a corvette servo in the trans at 230k to help hopefully get it to 300k. It runs and drives fantastic...friends and neighbors who borrow it can't believe it has the miles it does and that WT interior with the rubber floor really holds up over time. It's not a powerhouse by any means, but it scoots pretty good unladen and has pulled anything I've hitched to it without too much drama. I'm perfectly happy with this thing and would keep it forever, but I'm in the upper midwest and rust is starting to bubble up on the bed. I know in 2 years it's going to look like garbage and while I don't mind some well-earned patina, I can't stand rust. I know I'll need to replace it soon, but I'm really not looking forward to the inevitable tech that newer trucks are laden with. Based on experience with my current truck, GM has earned my business on the next one but I'm not gonna lie...I'm terrified. I spec'd a 21' WT online this morning and it doesn't appear that the manual transfer case is still available? I can't spec the locking axle without adding the Z71 package? I knew my beloved hand-crank windows were long gone but I figured I'd still be able to mostly have it my way. I'm going to ease on over to the Ford site this afternoon to see what their idea of "stripped down" is these days.

I wanted low range in the transfer case. Backing a loaded trailer in soft conditions means smoking a transmission or clutch without it. You have to buy the offroad package of some kind to get it. HDs come standard with it. Buying anything other than fully optioned is a nightmare experience. Right now, from each manufacturer's website, Ram offers the most truck for dollar. Ford is the most money.

My Son has a 15’ with 170k that needed an entire valve train & cam overhaul @ 160k and it seems like I don’t see many in the 300k range that still look and run well. They need to go further back than just 2014 as this has been a problem for several years prior. I know GM up'd the oil capacity to 8 quarts on newer models. But with the amount of oil my truck burned you could theoretically never have to change the oil. Just check, add, and replace the oil filter periodically.

Depending on your transmission you can disable afm without any aftermarket devices. If you have a 6 speed put it in manual and select 5th gear, 8 speeds select 7th gear. This disables afm on 14-18 I know. I use it on my 17 Tahoe and 18 Silverado.

I've got a 2010 5..3. Absolutely hated the cylinders dropping out. After about a year of ownership and after doing some research I ended up buying a Range Technology device that inserts into the OBDII port to keep the engine in 8 cyl mode. While mine does use some oil between changes, it's not as bad as some of the horror stories I've heard and read about, so for that I am thankful. But I agree, they should include all the engines that have the DOD curse.

Love my 2016 5.3 Silverado…however, I had the torque converter in my 6L80 go bad and ruin the transmission. Then not even 2,000 miles later, the lifter in the number one cylinder collapsed due to top lobe of the cam chipping off…spent several months trying to get it into a shop to delete the afm system then have it tuned to fix the ecm. After several months of waiting, it’s finally fixed and runs 1000% better than when it had the afm system. Im still getting 16-18 mpg city and 21-22 highway with a stock style cam and vvt turned off. As an engineer, it’s a complete nightmare design especially in the 2019+ models that have the bad lifters in every cylinder and angled pushrods that get bent easily.

Did the torque converter make a growling noise when going out?

    • @_earlaroo
      @_earlaroo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Not necessarily…see I did my research before fully committing with the delete kit. Like I said I was already having small issues with Afm affecting the engine and transmission (throttle was super lagging in traffic, put unnecessary load on engine and transmission during v4-v8 downshifting/up shifting). So I knew I wanted to keep it in V8 mode because going down the highway or in traffic it ran wayyy smoother with all 8 cylinders doing what it was suppose to (running all the time). So I tried the range disabler just to keep it in V8 mode and it worked great. Trans shifted much better, no unnecessary load on engine and trans during downshifting, and overall just better driving experience in V8 mode. Then like I said trans and afm lifter finally gave up (not due to range, but faulty torque converter and bad lifter/cam). After everything I went through and experienced I knew it was time to do the full delete on the AFM system. I went with a Brian Tooley Racing delete kit that replaces the cam various options on this), all lifters (with a hydraulic LS7 Style lifters instead of the afm style lifters) and I did new pushrods just as an extra precaution. Then you have to go into the ecm and turn off AFM from engaging. I live in Charlotte NC but I’m going against traffic in the mornings to go out of the city. So it does great cruising to work on the highway about 19-21 mpg and my “city driving” is going back home on country roads until I get into the city. Which like I said averages about 16-18 in city. Not trying to sell people on the swap because I know people who haven’t had issues with their trans/afm. I just rest easier at night knowing I don’t have to deal with another collapsed lifter.

    • @_earlaroo
      @_earlaroo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@anthonymeza8794 yes it did. It was kinda funny because i drove it like 45 minutes straight (no issues or noises whatsoever). Then on the way back it sounded like it was having an issue staying in overdrive. Like rev bouncing on highway/growling a little in 5-6 gear. I was dumb and babied it home, but since the torque converter was the issue, the trans wouldn’t have survived anyway. It happened around 115,000 miles which typically when you’ll see trouble with the 6L80 torque converters. So got a new trans with 100,000 mile warranty. I also did a trans flush about 3,000 miles before the torque converter acted up, so don’t know if that helped lead up to the torque converter failing. I’ve always been iffy about trans flushes anyway.

I bought my 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 5.3 liter engine January 21, 2021. In May we drove 2,000 miles to Maine. The next day the #6 cylinder pushrod failed and the engine shook like it wanted to exit the engine compartment. Took it to the local GM dealer. They had five in the shop just like mine. My truck had less than 4,000 miles on it. Only the left engine bank was fixed - the only broken part. GM wouldn’t fix the right side because it wasn’t broken. Yet. So that’s a crap shoot. The replacement time was quoted as “we don’t know” and “over four weeks” due to availability of parts, specifically gaskets. I was stunned at the amount of parts that had to be replaced. I’d really like GM to replace the lifters on the right side of the engine at their cost so I feel more comfortable that it won’t fail.

We were able to talk them down to $6500 with labor and tax because there was no way we were going to pay that markup. So they put a new engine, and I got the warranty 100,000 or 3 years. Long story short, I’m looking into getting the range afm delete. You’re right about the engine being a ticking time bomb. I hear a click every time I move from a dead stop sounds like it’s from the chasis and then my suspension is fine but when I go over those rough concrete speed bumps I hear an audible (can crushing) kind of sound from the front and rear suspension. Lifters are junk everywhere. If you rebuild or build older engines or are involved in racing / drag racing there are lots of issues going on right now. Issues from cam lobes being destroyed from poor heat treatment or poor heat treatment of the lifer , and even lifters that are not pumping up . I'm talking from the big cam companies. Lifters are just the tip of the iceberg. Guess where many of the lifters are coming from? Where lots of junk comes from today. This is what happens when you kill off manufacturing in your country . We didn't have these issues before. Even in the 80's and 90's it would have been a very rare occasion to have the cam or lifters failing at the rate they are now.
I know mechanics having issues with lots of parts today from all the big chain suppliers. Ebay is full of cheap out of spec Chinese crap. Many are driven by cost . Rebuilding older 4 speed , 5 speed transmissions using Chinese parts your going to end up with crap . Their parts are not to spec. I see these all the time. Person buys an older muscle car and having issues with their older manual transmissions. Muncie M21 , M22 and the like. At the heart someone cut corners to save money . It all goes in the garbage and you have to buy good parts . Parts that cost more money.
It cost much more money today to rebuild a transmission. We use to rebuild a GM TH350 or 400 for a few hundred bucks . Now it will cost you several thousand dollars . Welcome to today's world . You'd be surprised at how many parts in your doesmestic new vehicles are from you know where.

very true and good summary of the issue. I know there are a lot of QC issues going on right now and sadly I'm not sure if we will ever get back to having quality parts. Maybe Johnson lifters are the way to go but not sure if they are as good as they used to be either.

I paid my truck off 12-21-21. My truck went into a limp mode and would not go on 12-23-21 so I took my 2015 GMC sierra 1500 truck to get it fixed on 12-30-21. The #1 cylinder was misfiring the camshaft was found to be bad from CMC Automotive in Langley SC. When I found out the repair cost was going to be $7500 I called around to get other prices. Found that where I bought my truck from in 2015 from Johnson motors in Aiken SC could do the repairs for $4000 + or - $200. It took several weeks for them to get parts to fix it. I got my truck back on 1-19-2022. Drove it until 2-14-2022 and it did the same thing. They repaired it. I got it back 3-11-2022. Drove it until the same thing happened again on 3-18-22. Took it back to get it repaired and they couldn’t fix it after having it for two weeks. So GM said they were going to put me a new 5.3 engine in it. Every since 4-19-22 I have been waiting for it.I have been without a loaner vehicle or anything from the dealership or GM. Every week I get a no ETA. I own a 2007 Avalanche that had the AFM. At about 118,000 miles, I started getting error codes like traction management faults and other driveline issues. A scan showed it was all because of an issue with my #7 cylinder. Cylinders 1, 4, 6, and 7 are the AFM cylinders. I stopped driving the vehicle and started ordering parts. I ordered a new cam for a 4.8 engine, a set of 16 non-AFM lifters, a new timing chain, a non-solenoid valley cover, a gasket set, and a set of top end bolts (heads and intake manifold). My son and I did the work in our South Carolina driveway which means in October because of the summer heat and humidity. I got my parts through a GM Parts outlet, but places like Summit have AFM delete kits as well. I also had to get my ECM reflashed so it wouldn't be sending AFM error codes. It now runs like a champ at 151,000 miles. I guess mine is too old for the lawsuit.

Afm lifter concerns have been an issue since the system came out in 07 in the trucks. Still seeing brand new 21’s with lifter failures under 10k miles. The transmission issue is another thing. I’m a GM dealer trans tech and the 8 spds aren’t that big of a problem. The newest fluid seems to fix the shudder concern. That is 99% of the complaints I see in the 8 spds. Perform the GM flush procedure and put in the Mobil 1 HP fluid and the shudders disappear. I have had 2 vehicles in all I have done that still shuddered after the fluid change. Both were Colorados. The shudder was gone within the 200 miles GM requires to see full effects of the fluid exchange. I have seen some vehicles that you could hardly drive up the street they shuddered so bad, but the fluid fixed every one of them. On a side note, I work on more 6l80’s and 90’s than any other transmission.

The primary issue has been a sputtering that usually happens around 1500rps. It seems like the motor is cutting out. I was recommended Top Tier Fuel, which I've since switched to. I'm paying out the ass for TT Super Premium and it's still sputtering.
It threw codes a few weeks back for misfire. Since then it seems to lack power. My gramps rusted out '02 runs better.

DOD on my 07 Trailblazer was a mess. You’re right, it should go back further. Worst design ever thought of.

any idea why the 06 to 14 were not included in this? I'm in the middle of trying to figure out whether to rebuild or replace my 07 5.3 because of this non sense.

My 2015 only had 50000 miles on it when #7 lifter failed. Cost me $2700 to fix it and just destroyed my confidence in the truck. Only drove it 2 days a month and never in the rain. Was so disgusted I traded for a subaru to drive to work so I would have something I could rely on.

Subaru engines have a lot of problems too. And my brother has one and we've made a ton of videos with it. Not biased against them as I like the car but I now they blow lol

I’m a technician for General Motors. Around 4 cars a day come in with this issue and it’s been going on every day for about 5 weeks now

2013 gmc sierra 5.3 victim here, wondered whatever happened with this issue...my engine was rebuilt twice under 100k miles , engine would misfire on cyl #1 or 7 then start drinking 2 qts of oil between oil changes of 3k miles ....asked the tech if this issue repeats itself and shook his head yes with the manager there .... i took a loss and dumped it , couldnt depend on it...shame the rest of the truck was extremely nice

That stinks, yeah the dod system was pretty bad, only way to fix is to delete the system from. The truck like we did

I hope GM drags the government and EPA into this law suit.
I am a retired mechanic, 40 years experience who always told customers that oil changes are your best friend and cheap maintenance to make your vehicle last. I own a 2015 Silverado, change oil every 5000 k’s regardless, I also do the same for my wifes Ford Edge and drilled this into my daughters .
With regard to my comment on dragging EPA and government into this comes from them forcing manufacturers to extend oil change intervals , believing that move puts less oil and filters to discard. Good for the environment, that is a plus! Even tho synthetic oil is supposed to be better and last longer , lower viscosity because of tighter tolerance in engine building to reduce friction whose chain reaction is to improve fuel mileage is actually backfiring causing early engine failure.
Sad part is these failures are expensive for the consumer, $8-10 thousand when they still have 3years payments left on vehicle.

I have a 2015 silver and have not had any major issues requiring service YET, but my lifters have always been noisy. Now I do feel like they are a ticking time bomb.

Bought a '15 corvette this past fall. Everything checked out great. 2 hours into the 9 hour drive home from the dealership the car started to randomly vibrate then LOUD knocking, it all happened within seconds. It turned out to be lifter failure and the car was a completely undriveable. Went from the best day of my life to the worst real fast. I ended up having to buy a brand new LT1 motor from GM for it.

@@sly_midnight I dont think I'll ever touch another GM product unless it under warranty after that crap. Mine is a M7 and it went a second after I manually put it in eco mode. Going forward the autos are a time bomb since it will go into eco automatically unless you can get it disabled. I was going to go with a C6 Z06 but didnt due to the valve drop issues, the C7 didn't turn out to be any safer

My 2018 silverado with 5.3 at 90k miles has had no major issues. But i put in the pulsar LT to deactivate the AFM, its response is so much better. Hope my lifters last

Thanks for the info. While I was out leading a Jeep ride yesterday my wife bought me a truck as a surprise. It’s a 2016 and I had no idea what any potential problems would or could be. I watched your other video and BAM! It was all right there. Thanks for keeping people informed.

1st thing don't buy chevy or gmc just the looks. 2nd their's always a problem on any vehicle unless we get lucky. 3rd , if you're a gm guy, put up with the consequences. Afm and dfm known for lifters problems. Buy i programmer according to the make and model to disable it and it helps you out all this problem and more power for truck but the downfall is the warranty. So make your a good certain choice about it. I'm gmc guy 1500 denali 6.2l lifted min.10in lift 4th one all these years and never had a problem with a programmer and re gearing but knock on wood on my 2021 gmc sierra denali 6.2l 12in.lift, 37 tires 24x14 ,4:88 gears and pulsar lt programmer . Especially disable annoying auto stop .Good luck you guys. I'm not selling anything just a honest experience.

For those who don't know if you have 6spd Trans put it in manual 5. Or m5. Will stay in v8 mode. Same with 8spd Trans. Put it in m7
