  • ET spoke with Avery Brooks about the messages within ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s beloved episode 'Far Beyond the Stars,' streaming on CBS All Access. Brooks opens up in this 1998 interview about wanting to explore racism through the lens of a 1950s sci-fi writer, and how ‘DS9’ follows ‘Star Trek’s tradition of prominently featuring BIPOC characters. ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ continued this legacy with the franchise’s first Black female lead, and the show’s first season will make its broadcast debut in a special presentation starting Sept. 24 on CBS.

    Sisko is the most compelling captain in Star Trek. He has so many layers to his character.

      Yes. I totally agree. And the relationship between Jake and Benjamin was gold.. Great acting. He was a strong captain that had human flaws. The scene “I can live with it”....and so many others.

      I appreciate how unpolished and human he was. His family life but also his ruthlessness as a war time captain make him so compelling and helped shape the unique tone of ds9.

    • @snavs420
      @snavs420 ปีที่แล้ว

      He was also the warmest captain in terms of caring about his crew on a personal level and is more in touch with his and other's emotions. I also like that he's willing to be morally grey for good purposes. He never did any morally wrong, but moments like when he extorts Quark to get him to help on a mission is very "un-starfleet", and that's what sets him apart as a leader.

    Avery is a great actor. He made DS9 possible. He was the driving soul and power of the whole series.He brought something to the Star Trek that had hitherto and even since never been equaled.

    This was a good episode. However, let's not forget that Star Trek is exploring prejudice all the time with it's various stories involving alien cultures.
    This is what makes Star Trek so unique. It's educating us about prejudice without us even knowing it.
    I have to say Avery Brooks is gold. He has such a rare presence and distinctive personality that's one in a million. There's very few actors alive today that can fill the role of a Star Fleet captain.

    Far Beyond The Stars was and still is the very best episode of all DS9 . Avery Brook's acting and performance was so emotionally charged near the end ,that it was so heart wrenching to watch . A lot of racial discrimination still exists even in today's society in 2024 .😔

      I only got into one Star Trek series and I found Sisko the most engaging with the best overall character arc than the others. I couldn't really get into TNG but Deep Space Nine had some epic overall story plots that brought awareness in terms of race and politics. Especially now. Wish they did another series in this vein. Oh well.

    Unrelated: I believe Avery himself is a racist against whites and is why hes hard to work with and why he feels he hasnt been able to return to acting. He states because he's being attacked but nah. Just nah.
    By the way, i really enjoy Ds9 and Sisko is my 3rd fav cpt. Its a bummer to pick up on his reality vibes tho :/ i see it break through in his acting sometimes too. I just feel like people like this are fueling it more than anyone now a days.
